The Running Thread - 2019

It is still supposed to be single digits here on Wednesday, so no lent change for me!

Hug your mom for her amazingness. I made them once and after a small fire will gladly stand in line at a Polish Bakery for my prune filled fried items. I suppose it is probably better for my health that I can't fry anything.
Yeah it’s not going to be much warmer here but I’m going to try and eat better until it does warm up.

My mom doesn’t use prunes because most people don’t really like them so my grandma used raisins and that’s how we make them.

ATTQOTD: Nope. I didn't know it was Mardi Gras tomorrow and I didn't know that Lundi was even a thing. Is it Lundi Gras? :) For me it is just another Tuesday, before I feel guilty for 40 days (when I remember) about being a lapsed Catholic not doing anything for Lent, but not guilty enough to actually do anything about it.

@LSUlakes , would you please update my race entry to:

17 - avondale - Virginia Beach Marathon (4:35:00 / N/A)

The prior goal time was calculated with an error. Gotta set the record straight so that I can meet the goal without seeming to cheat. :)

Thanks!

ETA: That's for this month - March.

Has anyone run this race in Chicago? Hills?

https://runmfg.com/events/chicago10mile

I can't answer that but as an FYI (or for anyone else that every has the same question) you can plot a course in Google Earth Pro and it will give you the estimated elevation. It isn't perfect, for example it sometimes interprets running over a bridge as running down to the lower roadway and back up, but that is pretty obvious from the map. I've plotted some of my runs in it and then compared it to the elevation data from my watch's Barometric altimeter and they have been close enough to judge a race's hilliness.

ETA: Also search the race name on Map My Run. More and more races around me are using them for course maps and I believe every route includes elevation. Even if the race director isn't you often see people adding the course themselves. The caveat here is that a race may change routes from year to year but in my experience most don't change that much. They may take a slightly different route due to construction or closures but unless it is a really different course you will at least get an idea of the terrain in the area.

.
Have not run it, but the answer is ‘maybe’. Despite Chicago being pretty flat there are some over and under passes that result in hills. Hot Chocolate 15k, which starts in Grant Park and runs city streets south before turning north onto the lake path, had a nasty pedestrian bridge on it and a hill at Soldier Field/ Museum campus. If it runs only on the lake path the attached might be similar (it is from a run called Soldier Field 10 miler that someone posted to Strava last May).

Would be nice if races would post an approximate course map when they open registration, but they don’t.

Similarly, another option I've used in the past: https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

ATTQOTD-No Mardi Gras celebrations for us unless you count my sudden craving for a Pat O's hurricane.

Oh Lawd! I had flashbacks thinking about drinking one of those, and well the night time memory = FUN, the next morning = Not so much lol.

Attqotd:no, but I am dying to attend a rural Louisiana party. Not that I am that social but I love to eat and drink. I’ll even bring my homemade Tasso with me.

A LSU tailgate would be perfect for you. Its a big party as a whole, but its a bunch of little parties, and a nice amount of family ones. If you like college football it's worth checking out one day. Wear whatever team colors you like, the more random the school the better you will be treated, a fellow SEC team... well some people are not that nice. YOu find yourself in Louisiana for anything let me know and I will personally cook my best stuff for you.

Might as well cheer for LSU. Being from the seattle area I am just barely a Huskies fan, but don’t really have an actual attachment to any sports team.

Several years ago we played up their. I had just got married and we were way to poor to even think about making that trip at that time. However I know of a few folks that went and they had a blast. Most took a cruise either before or after the game to Alaska. I'll eventually make it over to the west coast one day.

@roxymama @opusone @LdyStormy76 (Chicago area people I can think of).

I'd venture to guess there are almost no hills because it's Chicago though.

Thanks everyone! They don’t have the course map yet and I had no luck finding last years. I’ll check out mapmyrun later tonight.

10 mile races are so hard to find. The only 10 miler around me in the fall is the weekend my DH is already out of town. There’s one in GA that some others here might run, but that date got gobbled up by DH too.

I have not run this race, but have ran many starting from around Grant Park where this race starts. Most of the courses are along the lakefront path so, almost by definition, they are pretty flat. A few races (like the Chicago Marathon) venture into the loop or local neighborhoods where there may be some very gentile inclines, but that is not common as it is a huge hassle and expense to close down streets.

And you really should not expect that much wind; it looks to me more like the race organizers hype. Most historians agree that the nickname "The Windy City" has more to do with politicians than weather.

Here is a screen shot of the course and elevation of the Lake HM that I ran in January. A couple of minor inclines over roads but pretty much a pancake.

It's pretty interesting that this course is very similar to the one that @LdyStormy76 posted. The range of the Y-axis in the 2 graphs is different, making one course look like constant climbs and declines and the other look absolutely flat.

You might get a chuckle out of this. The Tasso I make, I have to list on the menu as “cajun ham” because people got offended that I didn’t make it clear that it’s pork and they didn’t bother asking about an ingredient they didn't know. I still get complaints for not making it clearer.
