The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: I set my alarm for twenty minutes before we want to be out the door to run. It goes off, I get up and do bathroom related things (can't stand to run with unbrushed teeth), get my running clothes on, and sip a bit of water on the way out the door. Right now I'm waking up around 5:20 but that will continue to get earlier as our runs increase in time.

QOTD: For my morning run folks out there. How early do you start your runs? How much time do you give yourself from waking up to starting your run? What is your routine?

ATTQOTD: I work in NYC and my midweek morning runs are in Central Park before work. Unfortunately, I have a 2 hour commute so I need to wake @ 4:45 to give myself enough time to get a cup of coffee, catch my train, drop my stuff at the office and do a 4-6 miler in order to be back at my desk by 8:00am. I will hit the shower after getting a few time sensitive tasks done.
I will have everything laid out the night before so I can jump out of bed, brush my teeth, throw on my run clothes and bolt to catch my train. It helps that most days I meet a friend at my office so it forces me to get there even on days when I'm not feeling up to it.

On the weekend, I will wake around 7, get a cup of coffee, a small bite to eat and some time to digest before getting out the door about an hour later.

I only do morning runs on weekdays in the Summer (i.e. when there is daylight before I have to leave for work). A regular morning is waking up at 6:30 to leave the house at 7:15. If I'm doing a pre-work run, I'll wake up at 6, start running at 6:15 (no breakfast before my run), be done by 7 or 7:15 and try to leave for work by 7:30. It does sometimes require a quick turn around on showering for work and leaving the house without drying my hair. I also prepare easy to go breakfasts so I can take one with me to eat at the office. It helps that I have a short commute to get to the office.

I do weekend morning runs throughout the year. I generally try to wake up an hour before I have to leave the house so if I'm running in my neighborhood, I generally wake up around 7am to run at 8am. If I'm meeting a friend to run somewhere else, generally wake up around 6:30 to leave the house at 7:30 and run at 8.

ATTQOTD: Wow! There are some early risers here. The earliest runs for me are weekend ones where I’ll wake up at 6:30 for a 7am run. I head into work at 6:45 on the weekdays so there’s no chance I’ll wake up extra early for a pre-work run.

ATTQOTD: I would love to run in the mornings more, but generally can't fit it in before work. I do run in the morning whenever I am visiting family or on vacation. I get up, bathroom, dress, drink water, bathroom, and then out the door...about 35 minutes. I find ~30 minutes is when I can get the second crucial potty visit done. :) I always put my clothes out in a specific arrangement so that I can get dressed in the dark without bothering DH, who definitely is not a morning person. I don't eat if I'm running 6 miles or fewer.

I really love running at sunrise, so I wish I could do it more, but I can't generally work out the logistics. Usually I run after work.

baby dis_or_dat wakes at 4:50am(!!!!) and wants to be nursed immediately, so I’d have to wake up at 2:30am to do a run. No thanks!

All of those early mornings seem like a distant memory now, but reading this brought back those early mornings. It wasn't even bad for me as DW was doing the same as you are. She misses those times, but enjoys sleeping till 5:45 now. Hope the little one is doing well!

Wanted to give a S/O to our DIS runner @canglim52 who doesn't post much on the Running Thread but does in my journal. He ran the Celebration HM this past weekend and finished in 5th/1333 finishers with a new PR of 1:24:33. I can attest he's come a long way from Oct 2016 when he was gearing up for his first 10k. His fitness then was around a 50 min 10k or a 1:50 HM. It was fun to go back and look at his 5k repeats of 400-1200 meters at 7:43 pace where he was absolutely struggling. And now, a HM in 6:25 min/mile pace. Well done man and keep up the hard work! You've earned every bit of it.

Congrats!!!!

ATTQOTD: I am a solid lunchtime or afternoon runner...because sleep is life for me and I stink at going to bed early.

Attqotd: I wish I could morning run, but it’s winter and I’m at work until 10, and then usually amped from work, and in the morning it’s too cold. Well, right now it is just too busy for me, anyway.

I can’t wait for Sundance to be over.

ATTQOTD: For the most part I fall into "what are mornings?" I am a night shift nurse. Sometimes on the first day of a stretch I will run before I take a nap, but even still they are morning runs in the timeframe of 10 am. Mostly I'm an afternoon/evening runner. Can't wait for it to stop getting dark so early.

Depending on distance I’m up anywhere between 4:30 and 5:30 for my weekday runs. All my runs are done in the morning. I work from home so I have the added flexibility of not having to rush home to get ready to go to work.

ATTQOTD: Almost always a morning runner. I try to hit the road as soon as the sun is up. I will adjust during the winter to give it some time to warm up. I try to get up about 1.5 hours before sunrise, usually no alarm required. I have to have coffee, food, time to get un-stupid.

There is not enough time to get un-stupid.

I am a morning runner. Usually up at 5:30 sometimes 5. I am lucky work is normally flexible if I don’t have an early meeting so sometimes am not at work till 9 but usually 8:30. 3 years ago, we moved from suburbs to city, so went from 45 minute commute to a 10 minute walk :)

I have a question, which I think people here will be able to help with:

How would be the best way for me to see what tempatures were over the last few years for a specific race? I’m thinking about a marathon at the end of July, but if the average temperature for the last couple of races has been like 90°+ that’ll just be an automatic nah. But if temps are like mid-80ish I might go for it. Thanks!

Reflection is most useful with a plan, right? So I am working on that
Yes. In my case, in September I ran a half marathon with grand designs on a specific time to really see where I was at in relation to my first marathon. Come race day I felt like everything started out rough and progressively got worse. I was ready to be finished entirely around mile 3. Yep, mile 3. And so began the long march towards eventually finishing and thus stop running. Despite everything that day, I still set a PR even if it wasn't the PR I wanted.

Although I wanted to move on from that race, @DopeyBadger asked me questions about it. He refused to allow me to move on from the race until I had worked through it. And that was the best thing for me. Ultimately, I signed up for that race because I had hopes it would get me into a better corral for marathon weekend. It didn't do that, but that race exposed a lot of weaknesses that I needed to shore up for the marathon. Suffice it to say, I started working on those weaknesses and I now believe that the misery of that day actually led to the sheer elation of finishing the marathon.

So yes, I always recommend working evaluating and reflecting on any race. That race drained me mentally like no race I have ever done. Including the marathon. That half was more difficult mentally than Dopey for me. But honestly, I think the mental battles of that day led me to finishing my first marathon as part of Dopey in a great mood. I learned how to cope mentally.

ATTQOTD: I'm an after work runner, although I may try morning runs for the next few months. But we're talking 7:00am early, which is sleeping in for many.

QOTD: For my morning run folks out there. How early do you start your runs? How much time do you give yourself from waking up to starting your run? What is your routine?

In the fall and summer I run early mornings. Summer usually around 6 I’m out the door to beat the humidity. In the fall I’m up and out sometime between 3:30 and 5 depending on how long I’m running. Currently I’m just trying to find time to run or do some other kind of cardio that doesn’t involve frigid temps. So that means no early mornings as our neighborhood gym doesn’t open until 6 and that’s too late for me.
