The Running Thread - 2019

I really think I am running in the wrong city this weekend.
I know I am... it is going to be a "feels like" temp of 5F for my race! I don't even think I have enough layers to wear for this. My wind blocker jacket does not fit and my other jacket isn't really a good winter one. If I do it, I'm going to have to layer up in multiple shirts and half zips. I have no idea where my running gloves or hat or buff are. I did buy a new pair of running tights (my old ones a seam popped at the end of last winter), but I haven't opened them up yet to see how thick they even are.

Ok, I know a lot of you are gone to Disney but if anyone is around, I need some suggestions.

1. Warm, waterproof (inexpensive) gloves for running? I have been on Amazon for an hour looking and can't pick one! Also need to be able to get it on Prime.

2. Anyone use a wax based balm or salve (like Aquaphor) on their exposed skin (legs) while running in the cold or rain? I saw it suggested somewhere in my Google searches but want to hear from people I trust that have tried it!

And any other suggestions to keep me relatively dry and warm for my cold, rainy half on Saturday! Thanks!!

I've used Aquaphor on my face, nose, and ears when running in the rain/cold. No issues. Be careful to wash your hands after applying or touching your face, or you'll get it on your clothing. Wash it off afterwards.

This week we have the following folks with races:
It's a long list and my apologies if I forget to tag you or left your name out even after you have given it to me multiple times.

May you all have a magical race or races! look forward to meeting those who will be able to make it to the various meet ups.

All the best to everyone racing this weekend. I might be adding myself to that list. There is a local 10k on the Rail Trail Saturday.

Do I have any volunteers for the Fun Friday QOTD this week? I'm going to be driving for most of the day and figure the whole drive and text/type with family in the car is probably not the smartest thing to do. Also looking for someone or a combination to start things off Monday.

I'll volunteer for Monday. I'm happy to take suggestions by PM, and if none come through, I've got a few I can use.

@LSUlakes, I’ll try my hand at the Fun Friday QOTD.

I am not at Disney... So I keep saying « next year at this hour I will be at »
Which brings me to
ATTQOTD pre-race exitement: I am unable to control it so I embrace it! It is part of the celebration that a race is.

I know you are all busy Dopeying and all but just wanted to let you guys know...

WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!!!

I grabbed one of the free dining offers the other day and pulled the trigger on flights tonight! Fly to Chicago first then Orlando then LA where:

WE'RE GOING TO DISNEYLAND!!!

We have 7 nights at POR from late September, not sure where we will stay at DLR but likely Paradise Pier Hotel. SUPER excited (and a little bit poorer now) and got a great deal on flights, around USD$4100 to the US and back for 4 of us (still need to book the internal flights, they are around $USD1900). We are in the Alligator Bayou at POR, stayed at a Royal Room in 2017. There were only pirate rooms at Caribbean and didn't fancy Coronado Springs. Chicago has been on the to do list for a while so great to be finally going. The kids have already started looking at things to do there and found American Girl Place...

On the running front, I got a bit excited yesterday and ran fast down a hill and now have a sore achilles. Going to take a few days off to see how it goes.

Thanks!!

I don't do waterproof gloves. I use regular running gloves and if it's raining I pull them inside the sleeves of my running jacket that is waterproof because the sleeves are long enough to do that. Then they breath more and don't get sweaty inside the gloves. I use plain old Vaseline on my face to protect it. Still gives a nice layer of protection, spreads easier than something like Aquafor, and it washes off easier.

I finally wrapped up my big project at work and now have 1.5 work days left to read up on the latest and greatest things at WDW and trip planning! My excitement level is reaching a new high.
Speaking of excitement, this seems like a excellent intro into todays delayed QOTD: How do you keep you excitement levels to a minimum before a big race?

ATTQOTD: I try to stay busy to keep my mind off of it for the most part. As stated above, I am done with my project, minus a few follow up questions I may get. The other things I do to kill time are reading about Disney, so thats not going to help lol.

I don't know that I do keep them at a minimum. Last year was weird before marathon weekend because we had a snowstorm that cancelled our flight and the whole region was shut down. So it went from excitement to figuring out how to make it down to FL at all. We ended up having to drive from MA to D.C. for a flight. So I was focused on that but I do think the excitement of going to Disney and making it to the expo helped keep me awake for the ride. I was determined not to miss that race. :D

For a normal race I have enough stuff to do during the week leading I up to it that it keeps my mind off of it.

I know I am... it is going to be a "feels like" temp of 5F for my race! I don't even think I have enough layers to wear for this. Wow, my race just seems so much warmer now! It is supposed to be 38F for my race but raining the whole time I will be running (well 98% chance so there is a CHANCE it won't, lol!). And I am worried about what to wear too! Ugh, I would rather be at Disney!!

QOTD: Since I am extremely under trained for Sundays marathon, lets talk recovery, specifically minimize soreness. What do you do to help with soar muscles and not end up walking like a Donald?

ATTQOTD: Obviously training properly would help a lot with this issue. I have found that walking post race helps and some solid stretching will go a long way.

You ain't the only one. My strategy is grabbing a finisher jacket to shame myself into finishing. If the soreness is extraordinarily bad, Ill take the ice bath option.

If your starting in Coral D, interested in a beer at AK, another one somewhere else and talking about Disney and/or running for 5+ hours as we tour the 4 theme parks, then I am the guy you want to run/walk/drink with lol.

If you're undertrained, the best way to avoid soreness or injury after the full is to take it easy during the race. Stopping for beer, rides, and character photos will give your muscles a break, as will walking the aid stations along the way. Post-race, keep walking as much as you can until you reach the parking lot beer truck. A beer or three there will help you feel better too. Then, take an ice bath in your room (with a beer to keep time by), put on some compression gear, and get out and walk. Walking on Sunday afternoon helps your muscles from setting up and being really sore on Monday. DATW will combine walking with rehydration, the perfect mix for not paying attention to sore legs.
