The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: Hoy Boy, this will be a long one. I watch just about everything.

I’m a diehard Philly fan. Really excited for the rest of the Sixers season after their recent trades. Flyers have been down this year, but they’re 8-1-1 in their last 10 and Carter Hart is awesome. If the Phillies end up landing Harper they’ll be major contenders this year. The Union need to get their act together.

I’m a huge soccer fan, especially EPL & Bundesliga. Chelsea & Bayern Munich are the teams I root for. However, if Chelsea is 12 points out of 1st, I’m rooting for either Liverpool or Tottenham to iver take Man U. The Champions League is always a lot of fun. I’m also really looking forward to the Wmn’s World Cup. Then there’s also the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

I was watching some of the Pebble Beach Pro Am today and can’t wait for the golf season to fully start up.

Tennis, I mainly watch only the Majors but really enjoy them when I watch them.

It doesn’t start until Sep, but I’m looking forward to the Rugby World Cup.

Then I’m also a MMA & Boxing fan as well.

I’ve also started the WNBA more regularly, but know I’d watch it more if there was a Philly team.

Collegially, I watch basketball (The Hawk Will Never Die!) and really enjoy March Madness. For baseball & Hockey, I really only tune in for the College World Series (men’s & wmn’s) & the Frozen Four. I also watch the Collegiate Rugby Championship.

Frankly, I feel like I’m leaving out other sports I watch as well.

My hockey team hasn’t been doing well the last month so now it’s all about the baseball.

Definitely baseball. I go to a few Rangers games and I’m a big Dodger fan so I buy the MLB tv package so I can get their games. I have a feeling this year isn’t going to go well thanks to the front office acting like a small market team but it’s fun to watch the games. I haven’t watched many college basketball games but I’ll watch March Madness. It’s kind of like the NFL playoffs except instead of the Patriots, I root for Duke to lose.

I bought a 10 game pack for the Mavericks and have four games left. I just got back from watching the Bucks destroy them. I hadn’t seen the Bucks player from Greece before but he was amazing.

I was not able to run on my usual single track today due to a big snowfall this week, and I won’t be able to until they have been packed(hopefully ready by Sunday), but took this shot today on my run. FIS World Championships. It doesn’t do the size of these kickers and the halfpipe justice, though.

ATTQOTD: Baseball! I really do love it, but I find that the best afternoon naps in the summer are with a baseball game on in the background. I’m a Cubs fan, DH is a Braves fan, so that’s what we primarily watch even though we don’t get too many of their games and we don’t care enough to pay for them. We get all the Nationals and Orioles games, so we’ll put those on occasionally, but the Nationals announcers on MASN drive me crazy.

I enjoy watching The Masters and March Madness. I also look forward to the men’s and women’s NCAA gymnastics championship meets.

Mini race report: Bay Breeze Half Marathon (Star Wars Virtual Half).

Goal was 3:00, stretch goal was 2:45. I was running 8m/2m intervals, aiming for faster than 12:00 in the run parts. It started cold, windy, and rainy, but the rain stopped just after the race started. The cold and wind...not so much.

I was on track for the stretch goal until my right calf muscle started twitching around mile 10, forcing me to drop to a walk more often. Even so, I only missed it by three and a half minutes. Preliminary time, 2:48:32. This beat my previous PR by over 25 minutes.

Wife ran her first 10k, 1:34:59, and younger son did the 5k in 50:36.

I'll put a full report in my training journal after I get a shower.

Finally caught up on this thread! My heart will always belong to KY basketball. Go Big Blue! We look good this year but we're young as usual. Watched the Super Bowl but wasn't invested.

Not into SW at all, but excited. I'm going to a conference in Orlando then anyway so it made sense. My college roomie is meeting me with her four littles and husband. He's going to run his first half, and all the kids are going to Disney for the first time! Four under five years, though they might let the baby stay with Grandma.

One of my other close friends called last week to say he was going to run a local half. Said I inspired him when I ran the full. I have literally never thought of myself as inspirational, so that was sorta neat to hear. He runs but does so in regular Nikes that haven't been fitted to him, doesn't know about fueling/ gels/ etc... essentially where i was not very long ago. It's fun to watch someone discover distance running.

I will write a race recap tomorrow with pictures but I am beat. I got a whole two hours of sleep last night because of nerves. Was up at 2:30 am and on the road by 3:15 am.

I finished it was 29.5 miles on the garmin with over 4000 ft of elevation gain. I was139 out if 195. I finished in 7:47:25. I did not die, I did not get injured and finished under 8 hours.

Mallory had a great day. Everyone is spent. Time for bed now, hope my body lets me sleep, I hurt pretty bad.

This race sounds fun! I might have to keep this one in mind for 2020. (With the DLP half in September and Wine and Dine in Nov. I don't think I could throw another race in between this year.)

QOTD: Did you watch the super bowl last night and what did you think about it?

ATTQOTD: I did not watch it, which should answer how I felt about the game lol. Instead we watched Boston: The Documentary. I fell asleep like 15 minutes into it and was woken up by DW in excitement as a small clip had me and a friend shown in it running in 2014 lol. I was up after that and watched the remainder of it and noticed a few other people I know.

I did watch it. I have been quiet for a week because I was in FL last weekend. My and my GF went to Sarasota for a race. She did the 10k and set a PR for herself. I was supposed to do the 1/2 so it was hard sitting there while the race was happening. But then we headed to Disney after the race. I started watching the game outside ESPN on Boardwalk because you couldn't get in anywhere but finished it in my room. The fans were obnoxious during the game. Screaming after every play.

I did say the parade in MK the next day. It wasn't worth the hour wait at all but I can post pics and/or video if anyone cares to see it just let me know.

QOTD: What type of surfaces do you run on regularly? Which do you prefer of those type?

ATTQOTD: I really only encounter two types of surfaces; asphalt and concrete. I prefer asphalt of the two because in my mind it feels softer than concrete.

Sorry for missing yesterdays QOTD: I woke up with a stomach bug from hell! I am also way behind on the thread and work is keeping me from catching up at the moment. I will try to catch up in the next few days.

I run on asphalt most of the time, when I'm running.


My GF was slow to like this running thing. She signed up for the Disney 1/2 during marathon weekend in 2018 but she quit her training and didn't even attempt it. Then she went to the marathon finish line to wait for me. It was her first race experience. She saw what I had been talking about. She witnessed the energy and the stories in people's faces as they finished. So she did the BAA 10k last year with me. Her first completed race. She slowly started buy in. She did another 10k in Sept, and now this race last weekend. After this race last weekend she felt she did so poorly. I told her I thought she PR'd. She didn't believe me. We looked up her times and I was right. I saw the light bulb go off. She hasn't been terribly consistent with her training until this race. Even though she struggled she saw what the work will do for you. So now she is signed up for 6 races this year and two of them are ten milers. She said once she gets to ten she will feel more comfortable signing up for a 1/2.

She now admits the reason she didn't try for the 1/2 is because she didn't believe she could do it. Now she does. It was fun to witness that bulb go off and be a part of someone breaking through the wall of self doubt.

I cannot wait to read this recap. I'm fascinated with ultras so it'd be cool to hear your thoughts on it.

@LSUlakes, can you please remove my goal for my 2/17 Heartbreaker HM. I had originally planned this race to be a fast one, but it's going to be snowing/raining and in the high 20s/low 30s. I may actually not even run it...

Mostly because I've signed up for the LA Marathon on 3/24 (goal 4:00:00). Thanks!

I am registered for a 10 miler next Sunday, and debating whether to upgrade to the HM (i.e., a 5k right before the 10 miler w/ a 5-10 min break between the races).

I was training for the 10miler, but due to the furlough/gov't shutdown, I got extra miles in. I think I am prepared -- but wanted some other opinions....would you do the 10miler or the 5k+10 miler if you were me?

Here are my long runs over the last 6 weeks - WK1: 7.5 miler (4 miles day after), WK2: 8 miler + WDW 10k (TONS of walking), WK3: 8 miler, WK4: 10 miler (4 miles day after, WK5: 9.5 miler (5 miles day before), WK5: 7 miler. Also did ~3 additional runs each week, and consistent strength and cross-training.

If you can hit 10 miles in training you should be fine for a half marathon. One caution I’d throw out due to the way the race(s) are structured is to be sure to pace the 5k as the start of a half marathon, not as a stand-alone 5k.

The race format is a tricky one -- I can see it making the whole thing feel shorter, but also becoming a disaster by running a too-fast 5k. So, totally hear your advice on that!
