The Running Thread - 2016

So on the subject of winter warriors... This past weekend when I chose to go out and run in a winter wonderland both my hydration bottles and my phone froze. So I suppose I qualify as an idiot too! But does anyone have suggestions on how to keep things from freezing and shutting down?

For my phone I put those hunting hand warmer heat packs by it on the backside of the phone to keep the battery from shutting down. I used to wear a belt but now my phone is in an armband under my top layer(s). Just open the handwarmers about about 30 minutes before so they are nice & hot before using. Amazon sells them & walmart has them usually.

Probably a dumb question, but have you gone to a PCP or Urgent care? a cold this long in someone healthy sounds a lot like rule out pneumonia.

Well the cold had just started again over the weekend, and its running its course. The unfortunate side is this one seems to be a bit worse than last time. I know cold weather doesn't technically cause one to get sick, but I think mine has a lot to do with sinus type stuff. Over the weekend we went from fairly cool on Friday morning to a high of 80 on Saturday and then on Sunday it never got above 55 and Monday morning we were around 32. We are now trending warmer... I spend most of the night coughing up a lung and headaches during the day. So I think its mostly sinus related, but it makes me feel like poo. Medication is a weird thing for me, as most of the OTC stuff makes me feel worse. It has strange side effects... If it doesn't improve in the coming days then I will have to go see someone though.

For everyone dealing with running in the cold this week :)

Loved the video! I have seen some with same setup before and they are all great!

See @Baloo in MI question above for todays QOTD!

ATTQOTD: I haven't had this problem before, but would placing your phone and hydration somewhere as so it is in contact with your skin help some? Maybe a little more difficult with water, but I think it would help the phone out a lot...

ATTQOTD: I find that I can't put my phone in my hand or in my arm holster during really cold weather because it freezes pretty quickly. Corrals are the worst for freezing up because I forget to pocket my phone away. The inside chest pocket of my running vest or jacket seems to keep my phone the warmest. It's kind of weird if you aren't used to having a phone right there though, and I haven't done that for extreme mileage so I don't know about chafing.
I have found that I prefer no music in the cold cold cold, because I'd rather not bother with headphones under my hats/head wraps/ear coverings, etc. And I can hear cars better.

I put stuff like that under my winter shell jacket - stays nice and toasty. This includes my Camelbak, which I wear under the jacket. Keeps the liquids warm. This has worked in temps below zero for me.

Just fill your bottles with coffee, that should do the trick!

My fleece has a outer pocket with a zipper where I store my phone. The pocket is deep enough inside that the phone stays warm, though it also sometimes gets a little damp from sweat.

I wear my water belt under the fleece as well. This is pretty awkward in that it means I have to pull up the jacket and pull the bottle out from under it. It can also be a bit chilly, but I don't really stay cold for too long. Fortunately, I'm not terribly concerned about how this affects my pace on a training run.

On one of the colder runs last week, I discovered that the front pocket on my running belt apparently either pokes out from under the fleece or is just too close to the front. My GU didn't freeze solid, but it achieved a hard caramel texture that made it way more difficult to consume than I would have preferred. (Seriously, I don't feel like I should have to actively chew this stuff.) That's going to be moving to an inner pocket for future cold-weather long runs.

Well I honestly have never had that problem. I always hold onto my phone while I run. Sorry I'm not much help.

Can someone point me in the direction of where I can learn about buying DVC points from someone. I am clueless about all things involved, but wanted to know if there is value in doing so as opposed to just booking a normal trip, and then how does things work with magic bands / park tickets, ect ect... OR is this a bad idea and i should avoid it?

There is a DVC buy/sell board here. There is also Davids DVC rentals.

Buying points is not hard to do. You are essentially buying a room only reservation. You still get Magicbands and most other things you would get if you booked through Disney.

We used DVC rental store and as Ryan mentioned David's is another popular one. It was really easy to do actually and both of their websites have good explanations about how the process works and point calculators that can help you figure out the cost so you can compare with renting points or booking through Disney direct.

The obvious downside to renting points is that once you booked you can't cancel and it's non-refundable, so you need to be pretty sure about what you are wanting to do. Otherwise, it was really pretty simple to do. The reservation is in my name and I could use MDE to manage everything like the magic bands, magical express and online check-in.

I don't run with my phone so can't help you there but an insulated water bottle and room temperature water would help with the hydration bottles freezing. Salomon and Nathan make good insulated handheld water bottles. If you are looking for hydration packs look for trail running packs. Many are designed for long winter runs.

I have a flipbelt that I use for my phone, fuel and water and keep it under my jacket and sometimes under the top shirt if I have a few layers on. I bought the flipbelt waterbottle and fill it with warm water before I go out. Having it under my jacket, and since I run hot too it seems to keep the water from freezing. It can be a tad awkward to put back in, but it works. My new iPhone hasn't shut down on me but my old one did a few times and I used the handwarmers you can buy at Walmart to shove next to it and that did the trick! I also use Bluetooth headphones so I don't have to worry about wires and stuff. I don't do super long runs but I did a 12.5 mile run a week and a half ago when it was 9 degrees out and nothing froze up on me so I will take it as a good sign I found the right combo!

:yay:

I'm a former DVC member and have rented from David's a few times since selling my contract - very happy with their outfit! The major downside, IMO, is needing to pay upfront and really having no recourse if life happens and you need to cancel. I live close enough to WDW that airfare isn't an issue and I only ever rent points when I'm 99% SURE I won't need to cancel, but for anyone else, I suggest travel insurance.

A little update on my hip injury, in case anyone is curious. I visited a chiropractor for the first time ever today, hoping to get an actual diagnosis of my hip issue. I'll admit, I was a skeptic, but my husband swears by it and it was pretty cool! I DID get a diagnosis and also found out I probably need different running shoes. I have a hip flexor strain, which I keep re-aggravating by trying to run on it. It's definitely not a tear - whew!

It turns out that I have a slight pronation and somewhat low arches. To his credit, the chiro didn't condemn the running store folks who assessed me as neutral in both areas back in March. He also didn't go for the hard sell on orthotics, though did give me a basic 101 on them and told me to do some research. My foot issues are minimal enough that they probably just did not to affect me when I first started running, especially in brand new shoes. Now that I’ve been doing it a while, my stride and posture have become more consistent over time. Makes sense and no longer matches my original analysis when I was a brand new runner. I'm also to the point mileage wise where I was starting to look at replacing my shoes. All of the timing makes perfect sense.

So for now, a few more visits to make sure things are going in the right direction, heat/ice and rest, and shoe shopping. When I start running again it will be in new kicks. Huzzah!

QOTD: With a lot of followers on this thread running WDW Marathon weekend I thought todays question would generate some good replies. How do you feel about the "taper" portion of your training plan? Do you look forward to the reduced miles or hate running less? Does your mind start playing tricks on you and you think you have all kind of injuries all of a sudden? Anything else that the taper makes you feel?

ATTQOTD: I've been in a taper since November lol! Not that I have a race coming up, but not running for the most part has made me more tired, easily aggravated, and just grumpy. The plus side is I am spending a lot more time at home with DW and DD. So I guess that helped with D? lol. Hoping to get healthy again soon and get ready from spring races.
