The Running Thread - 2016

It was possible for her to be during the trip, but it didn't happen before hand. So, in my planning stages, I was trying to figure out how to approach the trip if that was the case. I am currently working on talking her into a trip this spring, so that information may be handy if I am successful!

OK, good. At least I remembered it, I just misunderstood. I was afraid I lost my mind.

QOTD: What do you like in a running jacket? What do you dislike? Which lines are your favorite and why?

ATTQOTD: I have a running jacket, but don't actually use it for running as I've never felt it was cold enough to run with it. It's more of a souvenir from a race I ran. It's also a highly debatable topic for that particular race because the color scheme changes every year and some years the colors are really bad.
I don't have an actual running jacket. I have a Columbia jacket but it is more of a spring/fall coat. I wear it while I run in the winter because even though it is thin and light, it is really warm. It does it's job for sure.

I hate it.
If I was as fast as I you I might hate it too Mike. :teeth:

I'd rather be called a jogger than a fat, lazy slob. Nobody will EVER call me that again!

QOTD: Do you track steps? If so what do you do with that information? Do you have a goal?

ATTQOTD: Since my current watch does I keep a eye on the number but rarely go out of my way to meet the suggested goal. I do pay more attention to it days leading up to a race to make sure I'm not on my feet more than usual though. So it does serve a purpose.
I don't track steps. When healthy, I track miles, that's all I care about.

QOTD: As kids its likely at some point you attended summer camp or something similar. Would you be interested in attending a running camp for adults?

ATTQOTD: Like most I have been in summer camps for various things growing up. A few years ago I came across a article in Runners World (Second mention this week lol) in which they talked about a few running camps for adults. I did a little research and they actually look like a lot of fun. Not sure if it will ever happen, but given the chance I would go without hesitation.

For reference here are a few links to some of the camps: (Zaps is the one I am interested in the most)

There are many more with a lot of options from this list here, http://running.competitor.com/2016/01/features/2016-running-camps-check_144152 The list is from 2016, once you select one, odds are the sites are updated for 2017 dates and info.
I wouldn't be opposed to it but the practical part of me would say, "I can either use the money for the camp or I could use the money to run actual races." I would lean toward the actual races.

This week we have the following folks with a race:

17 - @ebradley23 - Seashore Nature Trail 50k (Finish / N/A)
17 - @croach - Seashore Nature Trail 50k (NG / N/A)
17 - @SueInBoston - Jingle Bell 5K (NG/ N/A)

Best of luck this weekend to all! If you would like to revise your goal or unable to run this weekend, let me know and I will make the change. Looking forward to hearing how everyones race goes this weekend! Also looks like a DIS meet up opportunity at the Seashore 50k this weekend!

Good luck to each of you. @SueInBoston, I am hoping it warms up by Saturday for you. It feels like I am in Kansas right now with this wind blowing out there.

I want to run in the snow!!!! Unless I travel somewhere it probably isn't going to happen though. My long run this weekending is looking like its going to be warm and wet. No fun!

Come on up here to the North, we have snow to spare! Put in the first day of my simulation this evening, without wind chill it was 9 degrees and lots of snow on the ground. We are expecting between 7 and 12 more inches between now and Sunday. Looking like a great opportunity to test all my winter gear!

ATTQOTD: I am a total camp person. I spent my summer growing up as a camper and then in Junior High and High School working as a Junior Counselor, Counselor, and Senior Counselor. I loved it! After 6 years thoughI still never saw Bill Murray show up...

I would, and hope to at some point do a trail running camp. For my 30th birthday my wife bought me a spot in an Adventure Racing Academy. IT was like a 5 day camp, but we were simply camping out. It was 3 days of training and skill testing and then a 24 hour race and banquet. Some of the toughest and most rewarding days of my life. The owner was an ex-Navy Seal so it gives you an idea of how hard we were pushed. Totally awesome experience!

Running camp, probably not. I have done triathlon camp a couple of times though and it is a lot of fun...I think the multisport aspect lends itself well to a camp environment as you can get out and do different activities. Also it is a lot of fun to ride with a group. Clinics and drinking fill the evening sessions :drinking1

Agreed. Not sure I'd be interested in a running-specific camp, but I did enjoy the novice tri camp I went to two years ago.

QOTD: What is the longest and shortest recorded run that you have done? (0 does not count)

ATTQOTD: My longest run is from the WDW marathon in which my GPS tracked it as 26.44 miles. Being that I did not run the tangents well I would say this probably isn't to far off from reality. I'll also add that it has a lot of unusual turns that you wouldn't find on a normal marathon course through a city, so maybe that's part of it. Either way it was a good time.
My shortest run is 0.03 miles. I started a run, and immediately something felt wrong, and I shut it down. Normally I would have deleted something that short, but I think I kept it because my buddy was going to give me hard time as if I did not even make it out for a run. So I was saving it as proof that I did indeed get out there, but things just went south.

Looking forward to everyone's answers today as I am sure there could be some interesting stories!

ATTQOTD: I looked at my Garmin Connect and 2014 WDW Marathon was my longest at 26.62. With all the turns at Disney I think its hard to run the tangents well.

Shortest looks like some 200meter repeats.

Nothing too interesting here! Longest run was 15 miles while following the Galloway plan for Princess 2016. My shortest recorded "runs" are when I use my Garmin to time my kids reading homework, so it looks like I ran 0.1 in 20 minutes!

ATTQOTD:

Longest Run - 27.31 miles (November 2014 Marathon). This is when I used Runtastic and my phone so I have to believe this can't be right...
Shortest Run - 0.06 miles (January 2016 Kids 100m dash). Ran this with my daughter (GiGi) this past January in 1:25.7. We'll see how it compares to this year.

QOTD: What is the longest and shortest recorded run that you have done? (0 does not count)

Longest: 26.62 miles at the 2016 WDW Marathon. Had to do a lot of dodging, bobbing and weaving to get through the crowds as I started out very slowly and got faster in the back half of the marathon. I'd say it's pretty accurate given the amount of weaving in and out of traffic I had to do, in addition to the leapfrogging with people on different run/walk schedules.

Shortest: 1.65 miles this July. I was trying to get my scheduled 4 miles in with evening thunderstorms rolling through the area. Tried to get the run in between two lines of storms and got caught. There was a lot of uncomfortably close thunder and lightning before I got turned around and back to the house. Not my finest hour of judgement! The worst part was that it was just long enough of a run to get really heated up and sweaty and when I got home the storm had knocked the power out to the house. The rest of the evening was sitting in the dark with no air conditioning to cool things off.

QOTD: What is the longest and shortest recorded run that you have done? (0 does not count)
Longest - 26.85 miles at the 2013 WDW Marathon...ack!!

Shortest - 0.30 miles...I think that was me doing a little bit of a warm-up before a race. But I know I've had times where I started running and just knew it wasn't a good day to run like you LSULakes - but I think those happened on the treadmill.

ATTQOTD: my longest run ever is 36.2 miles (got lost in a 50k). I think the measure is off a little though as the distance recorded seemed too long.

My shortest I don't have a measure but the winter before last I got all suited up for a run, stepped out the door and slid across an iced over front patio. I looked around and saw that everything was covered in ice, just beautiful! Turned around and went back inside!

My longest run was 19.21 miles two weeks ago. I have a 20 mile run planned for the weekend so fingers crossed that goes well. My shortest recorded mile was a one mile run where I was trying out my new Garmin.

Running camp question - it seems like a cool idea but I would rather spend the money on races instead.

Funny story about the runner/jogger question for earlier this week. My husband and I are running a 5k with our 5 year old tomorrow morning. Its his first race ever and he is really excited. Our plans are to take it very easy with him and plenty of walk breaks if he needs them. We live very close to a local high school and have seen the cross country team running outside after school lately for their winter track practices. When he asked what they were doing, I told him they had practice after school. He immediately asks me why we haven't been practicing for our upcoming race and hasn't stopped bugging me about it. I caved last night and took him for a quick run around our neighborhood. It was really cold and he didn't stop talking the whole time. We stopped twice to walk and he then told me that he was "jogging" when we would start back up and it turned into "running" a little bit after. I asked him the difference and he said "Jogging is when you run slow and running is when you run faster." He said he learned this from his PE teacher but I think he thinks running is sprinting as fast as you can. Hopefully tomorrow's race with start a cool trend for our family!

QOTD: What is the longest and shortest recorded run that you have done? (0 does not count)

Longest run was back in October for my 50K race, measured 49.41km (30.88 miles). GPS accuracy isn't always the best on the trails...I honestly had considered running around a bit after the finish line to get my watch to 50K, but my legs had something to say about that ;)

Shortest I can find recorded is 2.29km (1.43 miles) and was from last month, one of the first runs I did when I started running with my 7 year old son. We did a loop of the park together.

Funny that in 5+ years of running both my longest and shortest recorded runs were within the last two months.

I thought mine was long for WDW with nearly a quarter mile more, but you do not seem to be alone with 26.6 ish. I agree with you though, with all the turns and moving from side to side with the crowds is more than likely the explanation for the extra distance. I would say .10 to .15 miles over is a very acceptable overage with a GPS watch. Beyond that, there is something else going on, ie tangents, crowds, or course to long. In WDW case, I think its from what we already discussed.

I would have been very disappointed with runtastic if I was using it for pacing on that day. If it assume correctly it probably told you that your pace was much faster than actual. Im sure you would have noticed this though as you passed the first few mile markers like the 10k and your app had you closer to 6.5 or more... maybe something like that. Good luck with the kids run too! Cant wait to get mine involved!
