The Running Thread - 2016

I had a great time at RnR Vegas a couple weekends ago but it was so crowded! My official time ended up being 3:04:44 because I stopped to find my parents who were spectating (large crowds of spectators too) and my watch time was around 2:57. I struggle a bit during this race too because there was so much walking in advance. I had more than 14,000 steps before we even started the half!

Your comment about your times reminded me to offer up a piece of advice for everyone running at Disney or other races with cut off points & sweepers:

Turn off auto pause on your watch! The clock and the balloon ladies don't stop just becaus you do. If your watch stops while you're taking pictures or using a porta-potty, you might end up thinking your pace is faster than it really is. If you're on the 16 min/mile bubble, this could be a problem.

Hey all you 2018 Dopey's...get your wallets ready. Registration date is in February 2017!!!! Ryan listed all the official registration dates over in the "new dates" thread.

Wow! I was complaining about Princess registration being in May. This is much worse!

I'm running a local 10K on Thanksgiving - same one I ran last year, that's my current 10K PR - and I'm cautiously optimistic. My performance in that will help me set my goals for Dopey and adjust my training plan as need be.

As for what I'm thankful for? I mentioned some things/people in my Marathon Weekend PTR **shameless plug, link in my signature **, but especially today, I'm thankful that I'm healthy, that I'm happy and loved, that I have a roof over my head and the opportunities to do the things I'd like.

I was grocery shopping for Thanksgiving (AKA Friendsgiving - I cook Thanksgiving for our "framily" every year) today and there was an elderly lady checking out in front of me - and her cards kept being declined and declined and she was crying. It was heartbreaking. She was just trying to buy some sandwich bread and lunchmeat, a gallon of milk, a couple of bananas and two apples. That's all - maybe $10 worth of groceries, if that. It was heartbreaking - all I could do was give her a hug, tell the cashier to just include her things in my groceries and that I'd cover those and anything else she might need. She just thanked me and thanked me, and told me she was just thinking about what she was going to do - that she was going to have to steal, and in 78 years of living she'd never once stolen a thing. I wish I could've done more, but I guess I'm just thankful I was there to help her in that dire moment of need? I dunno. It's been weighing on me all day.

Wow. Aren't you just the best!

@Keels that's a very kind thing to do and I would imagine most of here is the same situation would have reacted similar helping out someone having a hard time. Bless you!

QOTD: Have you ever registered for a race and at some point along your training decided that it may be within your best interest to not run the race? What factors contributed to that decision?

ATTQOTD: Like I may have said before a lot of my QOTD comes from personal experiences. Today is not any different. I sit here with a cold that just wont go away and is getting worse this week. It has been nearly a month since I have run anything worth writing home about and have about 6 weeks to my marathon. I have some serious doubts if I should attempt the race at all. I think I could finish the race, but at this time I do not see the point of doing so as I project I could finish under ideal conditions around 4 hours which is 30 to 60 minutes slower then any of my goals... I feel like if choose not to run it though I am letting a lot of folks down, but I really don't want to go out and have a bad race experience. Money wise I am only out registration cost at this time which is ~$100, so that isn't to bad. I really need to get rid of this cold and get a few runs in to see where I am at before I make a final decision on the matter. I am just kinda bummed that it has come to this.

2016 Princess 10K. I had a lot of injury and illness, and I just wasn't going to be ready. I deferred the 10K and did the 5k. Now, I'm registered because of my deferral, but I'm facing that same decision again (with no deferral option).

QOTD: Anyone doing a Turkey Trot of similar type race this week? Since it is Thanksgiving, what is something you are thankful for that you would like to share with the group?

I'll be running a Thanksgiving race later today. It's the 80th running of the Manchester Road Race, and will be my 9th (non-consecutive) year running it. This was my very first race back in 1993.

I'm thankful for this group, that is so encouraging, helpful, and inclusive.

@LSUlakes - you can add this race sometime after your Thanksgiving festivities.

11/24 - mrsgryphon - Manchester Road Race 4.748 mile (46:00/N/A)

Just finished prepping the turkey and getting it in the oven. Getting ready to head out on my run today. I have been thinking about the upcoming Marathon Weekend. I know many on this thread are not going, but for all that are (and I will put this on the Marathon Weekend Thread) I was hoping we could try again to do a meet up before the races. We tried this last year and it did not succeed, too many people and we need a definitive meet up location. I was thinking maybe just after the gear drop off areas. So not the security bag check, but the gear drop off. It is usually organized alphabetically and last year I noticed that there is some open space just past the last gear drop off section that could work. I do not remember exactly but the last section was like W-Z (I am guessing here).

Anyway, we could set a time to try to connect before we need to head to the corrals for a meet up and possibly a picture. If people are interested, let's decide on which race/s to do it and then set the time. Let me know your thoughts.

Happy Thanksgiving - at least for those who celebrate it!

I would love to try and meet up with anyone doing the races, sounds like a great idea.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my American friends on here...gobble gobble!

Good idea, but I'd prefer something during the day, mostly because I get to the start later than recommended, but also because we'd have more time for socializing. And better light for pictures.

If you would like to revise your goal for your upcoming race or any changes to the race just let me know and I will adjust. Good luck to each of you! I look forward to reading about how your race went!

Very excited to share my race results from this morning. Yes, it was a PR for this distance, but I'm not sure that really counts since this is likely the only 3.1416 (pi) mile race in existence. The biggest news is that I was able to run negative mile splits: 7:02, 6:56, 6:37 (with a 6:30 pace for the last 0.1416 miles). My overall time was 21:29 which beat my 22:00 goal. Also, although I ran a similar overall pace (actually slightly faster) to my last 5k, it felt much, much better because I took the first mile a little easier, so only the last half mile felt like I was really pushing it (versus the last 1.5 miles on my previous 5k).

Great 5-mile Turkey Trot this morning! Finished in 39:50 (7:58 pace), which smashed both my goal (42:30) and my previous PR (44:03)! Proud of the way I ran - big negative splits! After a threat of rain this morning, the weather ended up being perfect - partly cloudy with temps in the mid/upper 40s. Basically flat course through the neighborhood "Main Street" and through some cute residential streets with lots of folks cheering from their front yards. The only weirdness was at the start. About 5 minutes before the start, they announced that they'd be starting about 5 minutes late. A couple minutes later, a city council member said a few words. Then there was silence for a few more minutes and suddenly the starting horn went off. No announcement or countdown or anything. So weird since they had a PA system set up so I don't know why they didn't use it. I think this is the only race I've ever done that didn't have someone sing or play the national anthem! :confused3

Finished my 5-mile Turkey Trot in 9:33 miles; no official results yet, but should be in the 48:00 range. Slow, crowded start and I expected to finish a lot slower so I guess I'm happy. About a month to lose some lbs and make those 48.6 miles a little easier.

Way to go everyone!

FYI, for anyone looking for a Garmin 235. My local Fleet Feet is having it at $250 (lowest advertised price), plus $20 fitnatic dollars for every $100 spent, and rewards of $15 for every $100 spent. Thus, after the "discounts" (which can be used at a later time) the total price comes down to "$180". They haven't explicitly stated this deal, but this is me putting two and two together. Pretty sweet deal and hopefully your Fleet Feet has a similar one!

I was able to run (slowly) the Turkey Trot 5K this morning at a 12:21/mi pace. Given the fact that I couldn't walk upright yesterday (tweaked lower back) and this morning's rainy humidity, I'll take it! Now have heat on my back and sitting reclined to take pressure off, hoping I'll be able to swing Sunday's half marathon, my favorite non-Disney half (Space Coast).

Hope you all are having a fabulous Thanksgiving! Or fabulous Thursday as the case may be! :)

Just finished my Turkey Day 10k. It was an exclusive event. Invite only and I forgot to send out the invites.

If anyone wants to splurge for themselves or a loved one, Sam'a Club dropped the price of their Fenix 3 bundle. It's a Titanium Fenix 3 HR (Sam's Club exclusive) with a Titanium band, silicone band and a universal arm band for $449. They won't price match my purchase I made last month, but I am within my return period. They actually recommende I return it after getting the new bundle. Silly, but to save $300 (me and DH each got one of our anniversary and Christmas combined) it's worth going through the return.

Hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving!!

Completed Atlanta's Triple Peach today

Congrats! A little warm, but mostly good conditions for the half? Beautiful day here in Atl/N. Georgia.

Did the PT for a bunch of years in a row. Didn't go for the triple peach, and now I'm jealous! I got turned off from the T-day half after a cold, windy one a couple of years ago.

I ran my 4.3 mile Gobble Wobble this morning. This was an untimed race, but Garmin said 42.18. The weather was a perfect, cloudy and 40 degrees. I mostly just ran by feel today and those 4 miles just flew by. I wanted to keep running at the finish, but alas, I was lured by donuts & cider instead.
