The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: I tend to listen to music or podcasts and zone out a bit. During periods where work is very intense or if I have a personal issue of significance I will use he run to process thoughts and feelings. It can be very helpful.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend and to our resident Ironman @FFigawi! Wish you the best!

QOTD: What are some things you think about while you are out for a run?

On any run at faster than marathon pace, I'm typically focused on the run. But for the large majority of my running I'm generally focused on everything but the run (outside of always being focused on safety while running). The biggest thing that occupies my time is answering all of the questions from here. You guys keep me busy mentally during running.

Good luck tomorrow @FFigawi! You got this! I got live tracking all ready to go!

Same here. Most of the time I try to think about nothing, honestly. I am a chronic overthinker, so I think it is really necessary.

I try to focus on the audiobook I'm listening to while I run. It helps me keep from obsessing over my pace or distance (are we there yet?) and just lets the legs do the work in the background. My mind will wander off on occasion and settle on work topics or upcoming plans sometimes, though.

ATTQOTD: I am usually thinking about my pace and the goal of the workout. I also do a lot of planning while I'm out for a run. Planning for the next day, the weekend, a big event coming up... Unfortunately by the time I am done running I forget half the "really good ideas" I had while I was running. It is amazing how the miles fly by when my mind is concentrating on something else.

Good luck to all the racers this weekend and to everyone for their long run. Safe travels as lwell!

I think about anything and everything! My brain is constantly going. SQUIRREL!

I did an untimed 5k today. Ive come to realize that I can't run with another person. We talk and I get winded and then I have to stop more often for air. And I lose track of intervals because I don't want to interrupt our conversations. At least when I run with dh in April we won't talk much. Well, he won't anyway. Lol!

My 9 year old was supposed to do the one mile. Well, no one told them where to turn around so he went three miles. I'm glad I gave him his inhaler beforehand! But dh was wondering why he was gone for 30 minutes because he was waiting at the finish line. He was with a friend and we were on a track so I wasn't too worried but I'm a little mad.

Sweet! Loving these real time updates @Keels!

Quick vent (feel free to skip): all my lighting sources died on me. I didn't charge my new headlamp correctly overnight, my old headlamp was dead, so I brought a flashlight with me and it died after 20 seconds and I had to rely on my iPhone. Argh! Luckily the tracer 360 worked and only 1 car tried to run me off the road. Took all my willpower not to chuck my dead flashlight at it.

@FFigawi just crossed the last timing mat - only ~30 miles left on the bike! Getting ready to head back over there and get set for the Marathon!

Unfortunately, the bike section wasn't very spectator friendly but I know his bestie and his wife got to see him at Mile 40. The Marathon leg is much more spectator friendly, so we'll be able to see him multiple times before the finish line and hear him be declared an Ironman!!

Not too much longer and he'll be a half marathon away! My friends hanging with me are pulling for you too :)!!

Would you say a projected finish is about 2 hours away? I just got home from work so I have no idea how his pace is. I would love to see him cross the finish though.

I would guess roughly 2:06 from now (assuming 12 miles remaining at 10:30 min/mile). This would probably be a best case scenario. Or roughly 8:00pm central or 9:00pm eastern.
