The Running Thread - 2016

I heard about that, but it is all about TV revenue. I doubt that FL can decide to cancel this on their own since the weather is supposed to be great 12 hours before kick-off, and that locale is not expected to take a direct hit. This is likely a network decision - a network owned by Disney.

I don't think its a TV thing because they had agreed to move the time of the game already. The problem is UF doesn't want to give up a home game. I can understand the reasoning for that. Even if UF is spared, the issue will be law enforcement that will be needed else where will have to work a game instead of helping those in need along the coast. I recently read that the decision is now out of LSU/UF hands and the SEC and NCAA are making the call, which keeps getting delayed every two hours. Its driving me crazy!

QOTD: Do you use a fuel belt / hydration system for your runs? Do you use them for every run, or just runs of "x" miles or "x" time? Do you also run your races with them?

For training runs, I carry a 10oz Nathan bottle but without the glove portion. I just put all the bottles I need into a grocery bag (ice packs if hot out) and run with the bag for the first 0.5 mile. Then I leave it at a park in the middle of my neighborhood and loop around for a new bottle every 3 miles (that is if someone doesn't steal them?!?!?! and then very oddly put them back the next day?!?!?!). I almost always consume roughly 3 oz of water per mile regardless of environmental conditions or distance/duration.

For races, I carry my 10oz Nathan bottle with the glove portion. I put 2 E-Gels in the pocket of the glove and one additional E-Gel in my ladies shorts with side pockets (so convenient!). I re-fill it at every aid station and attempt to drink 3 oz of water per mile.

I think that FL could have offered other options (like moving the game to LSU or a neutral site), but they never had the ability to make any of these decision on their own. The only decision that they could have made on their own would have been to cancel the game.

Bring it to Birmingham! Although I loath Legion Field, the turf needs some love and I think the locals here could fill the place for a good match-up. (AU and Bama are also on the road this weekend.) Of course... I'll be out of town for the Army Ten Miler this weekend, but it's still a good idea.

But seriously, UF hasn't done a good job of explaining their position, related to personnel (especially security/emergency), and spectator safety in transit. Miami and FSU also appear to be a bit stubborn as well, but there isn't a good spot somewhere in the middle that also won't be affected. Other schools have been lucky that they have the same off weeks later in the year. I'm also not sure where the point of no return is for making a change.

They could move the game to Atlanta - the Falcons are on the road this week.

The game is CANCELLED and will not be made up. ATL has another college game in in this weekend, so it wasn't really an option. LSU offered the same deal we made with USCe last year but UF wanted no part of it. Not playing the game was really their best option with the D and O lines in as bad shape as they are now injury wise. I am beyond disappointed with how poor UF and the SEC looks after all this, plus no game at all!!!!

Since neither team has a realistic shot at the SECCG at this point, I don't see how it really matters. I wouldn't sweat a missed game in a 2 loss season.

Publicly they are saying an effort will be made to reschedule, but I wonder how realistic that is. It's the right call, and I understand that 48 hours may be too tight to move the location, but what about 72 hours? That will be the main criticism, I think.

All I can say from down here in the Sunshine State is that even here in the Tampa Bay area - practically the only area more or less in the clear - we've been told to expect tropical storm conditions and the possibility of widespread power outages - Matthew is big and bad and if things don't go well, the destruction can easily be catastrophic to a large chunk of that state. I love my Gators and am sad about no game against LSU, but right now, I think most Floridians just want to get through this and help our fellow Floridians recover; football can take a back seat for a week or more. :)

That probably means that they will find a way to play the game if it is necessary to determine the winner of either the SECe or SECw.

Here is a weird question or two with respect the LSU/FL cancellation:

What if FL wins out and TN drops a couple of SEC games? Would a 6-1 (SEC play) FL get in the SECCG over a 6-2 TN team that beat them?

What if LSU wins out and Alabama only loses the LSU game? Would Alabama get in at 7-1 over a 6-1 LSU team that won head to head?

LOL - not playing this game could come back to bite the decisions makes in the SEC & NCAA in the behind.

You and I will most likely never agree on anything in college football based upon who we both support.

LSU starting on Tuesday, has made every effort possible to accommodate UF is making this game happen in Louisiana. They had reserved hotels rooms for UF in Baton Rouge for a game in Death Valley and in New Orleans for a game at the Superdome. LSU had even offered to send a plane to pick them up.

Yes, UF gets in and LSU would be out. So not playing this game is to UF's advantage and a major disadvantage to LSU. IMO that's why UF dragged their feet the whole time.

To make things even better this week our mascot, Mike the Tiger has been given 1-2 months to live. The cancer treatment did not work and it has spread.
(I know in the grand scheme of things this is not nearly as important as what is actually possible to happen to the state of Florida in the next 24-36 hours. So I will stop with my ranting/derailing of this thread and get back onto running with my next post)

You are probably right, which makes it even more shameful that the SEC front office cancelled the game. All LSU can do is win out and make this a problem.

QOTD: Do you use a fuel belt / hydration system for your runs? Do you use them for every run, or just runs of "x" miles or "x" time? Do you also run your races with them?

I have 2 sizes of handheld bottles. The smaller size is usually sufficient for half marathon training. I refill from water fountains on the trail during hot weather. I have a belt also for marathon training but I decided I hated it and would rather just carry a larger bottle. I don't carry anything at races, just rely on water stops. I also don't carry water on training runs under 6 miles.

Wow. Yeah, after listening to Foley's press conference, it appears they got caught flat footed. The really good point he did make, though, was the logistics of moving the team in the hours before the storm's arrival in Gainesville. That's a very real consideration, but something tells me it could have been handled without too much trouble as he took a long time to get to that issue.

I've been watching this storm like a hawk since late last week, as we're driving to Atlanta to fly to DC for the Army Ten Miler. We had concerns about the flight, and about the weather during the race itself. It looks like we'll be in clear the whole way, but for a while it looked like it might have been a problem. The Wine & Dine half also falls in hurricane season, although when the chances of getting hit are much lower. It would take a heck of storm to keep me from barreling into Orlando, anyways. (If you gotta ride out a storm, where else is better?) I know W&D has been cut short recently due to rain, but I wonder what the threshold is on a storm during the daytime?

No hydration system in races... I just use the water stations. In the summer I always use a 2 X 10 oz. bottle belt. In the cooler months, not so much unless the run is maybe 90 minutes or more.

ATTQOTD-no belts for me either.........I don't drink or fuel much during training runs unless they go over 90 minutes. I rely on the water/fuel stations when participating at an event. Hopefully they won't run out of supplies by the time I get there.
