The Running Thread - 2016

@LSUlakes I have another race to add if you don't mind.

Baloo in MI, 11/20/16, Chocolate Run, 10K + 5K Challenge, PR effort for 10k, 5k just for fun

Running the 10K to attempt a PR and to push my legs. Then I am running the 5K about a half hour later with my daughter and hoping I can keep up with her!! Then we will partake in chocolate, should be a good day

Does your race have multiple starts? Mine had like three different waves...8am, 9am, etc. I would tell your friend if she is nervous about pumpkin size to just get her pumpkin first thing when she arrives. They had lots of little ones...so this way she can make sure she grabs a small one. Mine was 4lbs I think? But they had all kinds. They weigh it for you so you can say "ok" or "no, let's get something else"
Mine has 10 waves and they all apparently sold out. They're on 10 minute intervals between 9:00am-10:30am. I keep telling her she can get a little pumpkin. I even saw one run where a person online got one the size of a softball. I want a small-medium pumpkin. 4lbs sounds good.

QOTD: To follow up on yesterdays question. You just finished your race and you experiencing that "runners high". What is your post race routine?

ATTQOTD: Walking out the finishers area I grab something to drink that is being distributed. I will find my family and drink I nice ice cold chocolate milk. While doing so I will try to stretch. I then locate the nearest "hydration station" (Beer!) and have a glass or two while discussing the days accomplishments and/or disappointments while also waiting to watch my friends cross the finish line. For bigger races we will stick around for the next hour or so and then head home. Once home or hotel, I nice shower and then a few minutes to relax, maybe 30 minutes of just laying on a flat surface to just give everything a rest. I will put on some compression socks, eat a snack if I am up to it and then try to stay active for the remainder of the day. Every big race is followed up by going out to eat somewhere. I look more at the beer options than the food options to determine that location. The great thing about the WDW marathon is post race I did a lot of walking, had some beers, cramped up on its a small world... ahh good times. Basically any ride that was cramped for a 6'-5" + leg cramps, it was the best and worse of times. I also enjoyed eating a entire cinnamon roll from Gaston's Tavern.

QOTD: To follow up on yesterdays question. You just finished your race and you experiencing that "runners high". What is your post race routine?
My post race routine differs on the race. For local 5Ks some of them have after parties and stuff like that. For Disney races I get my medal, get my box, banana, Powerade, and water. Then I get my picture with my medal, and hopefully get a picture with a character and my medal. After that it's back to the hotel, shower, change and off to the parks to celebrate!

Shower. I have the post-race excitement for about as long as it takes to get my medal and grab whatever snacks look good and then I'm all about getting clean. The post-race excitement resumes after I am cleaned up.

It has to be light on the cheese with somewhat thin crust. Naples at Disneyland did not agree with me. o_O Via Napoli in Epcot is perfect.

Aaaaand that's the sound of me crossing off Naples pizza from my DL itinerary. I really liked the thin flatbreads from the cafe in the Contemporary during marathon weekend. Very light on the crust and the cheese. But I kind of remember you saying you've had experience with that location too and liked it.

Now, I finally understand why the lines are always so long... because many folks are going back for their second or third helpings.

This gives me weird images in my head of the world's saddest buffet.
And from here on out I will be referring to race porto-potties at the start area as "The Golden Corral"
You may need to be southern or midwestern to know that reference.

.

ATTQOTD: I run through the finish waving to who knows who everytime. Then I stop and put my hands on my hips and then remember I should keep walking...everytime. I usually have either my hubby or father-in-law running the race so I always grab all my swag/food and then wait for them at the very back of the finishers' chute. I realize I've grabbed too much stuff and then put all my extra bottles of wahtever on the ground and get annoyed that I have to carry this stuff I don't need. My hubby finishes and I get so excited for him and he's always like "give me a minnute...I need a minute" so I swarm around him like a hummingbird talking his ear off while he basically is trying to recover from what we just did and finally he'll say "Ok, I'm good, let's go get our beers". Then we get our beers and take tons of pictures of us with our beers. And then we usually walk what seems like the same distance we just ran back to wherever grandma and my daughter are. And then we eat giant brunch. Generally after showers and changing we play nap-chicken and eventually someone wins and gets to nap first. Then the other one gets to nap. If you play it right and start your nap before the kiddo naps, then you get a bonus nap while she is napping.
Then five days later I remember to go hang up my medal and finally unpack my expo freebies I thought I needed at the time.

And then I write a 50 page race recap (j/k) on my journal

ATTQOTD: my routine sounds very similar. I will track down my family celebrate the race, cheer on others and then head out. Chocolate milk is a must. I bring it in a small ice chest in the car. Love the stuff, especially when it is super cold.

If long race I will do an ice bath and a hot shower, then go for a walk. After that I try to treat the remainder of the day like any other weekend day - chores, sports, (if I am lucky) a nap. My goal is to balance being active and relaxing. We usually go out to dinner or BBQ. And if a Saturday in the fall I fly my Spartan flag and watch the game.

For me, the first priority is making sure that I got the race properly logged and annotated in RunKeeper. After that, find a drink and walk for 5-10 minutes to make sure that everything's still working properly. Then grab some of whatever snack they're giving out and make sure that I got my medal. (I completely missed one once and had to go back and get it about 15 minutes after I finished a race, while I was eating a snack.)

Upcoming race to add - my first half marathon:
10/9/16 - Towpath Half Marathon (2:45:00/NA)

I am an introvert, so I don't celebrate much with anyone other than family/friends who have run with me or come to support me. Like others, my focus is on getting cleaned up and then having fun with my friends/family where ever we happen to be on race day. I do a lot of beach races, so usually a beach themed day.

rD races are totally different. I don't feel introverted at all at WDW for some reason. I tend to wash up quickly and then find someplace along the course near the finish to cheer on other runners. After the races are wrapped up, shower, change and head to the parks.

I drink a lot after I finish, and grab some sort of protein and carb source, but I am generally not really hungry for a few hours. I don't eat big meals on race days - even after half or full marathons. But the next day - look out.

ATTQOTD: Am I the only one who has trouble eating a large breakfast after a race? I typically eat whatever they give after a race (bananas, string cheese, water, coconut juice ...) and I even packed some post race soy milk, but I've had trouble eating a real breakfast afterwards. Oh, I see @BuckeyeBama has similar issues. Phew!

Anyways, depending on circumstances I'll go grab my checked bag and drink loads of water with NUUN in it. I'll have some post race refreshments as mentioned previously. I'll try to stretch and admire the bling! I should go back to cheer on the other runners, but by the time I've recovered my breath and stretched, my family has arrived to go home.

Post race shower is awesome and I'll take my time in it! I went into a hot tub before my shower during the last race and it was great! I'll also want some coffee since I've been up since 4am and I heard caffeine helps with post race headaches.

Otherwise I will only wear flip flops the whole day. I try to take it a little easy because I'm usually super sore, but my family has no mercy and I'm usually hobbling in the back as we walk everywhere. :P My adrenaline usually keeps me going for a few hours, but I'll be flagging afterwards and want a post race nap.

Oh! I forgot! I obsessively check my phone all day to see results and pictures!

I usually get a glass of wine. At least at my wine themed races. All other races I grab whatever post-race fuel is available, rehydrate and refuel and then make my way to a victory meal. Also shower ASAP which sometimes isn't for a little while.

This gives me weird images in my head of the world's saddest buffet.

Golden Corrals are in the Mid-Atlantic (and possibly the whole Northeast?) now. That being said, that reference works on so many levels. For one, I always need to use the bathroom badly after visiting Golden Corral (the food doesn't agree with me) and being 'Golden' is also appropriate given the nature of porto-potties. Additionally they're nearby the race corrals. :D

I am both a southerner (grew up in Texas) and a midwesterner (lived here for most of the last 20 years), so completely understand.

"saddest buffet" - yuck! Lol

Good to see I'm not the only one desperately trying to catch my breath after a race. I love the photographers who want to capture the moment.

Also, a nice cold beer is so great after a race! But it hits me SO fast and kinda weird chugging a beer at 8am. :drinking1

Before I ever ran a half, I happened upon the end of a race at Napa/Sonoma and there was free wine for the finishers and I was like "who would want to drink alcohol after a race?!" The answer is me!

Nope. I'm hardly ever hungry after a race. It takes several hours before I want to eat any real food. I am always ready to rehydrate, though. Post-marathon afternoon is generally spent bar hopping.

Disney races: I get my medal, water and snacks. I eat the banana right away, then go get my picture taken. I Skype my family, and then get on the bus. When I get back to the resort, I take the cool bath I talked about, then a shower. I grab breakfast from the food court, and crash for a little while (maybe a nap). I usually take a low key trip to the parks or Disney Springs, but nothing too intense.

Local races: Medal, water, snacks. Meet up with my family for photos and eat my banana. If there is some kind of expo, we'll walk around that for a little while, then go out to eat.

After my first rD marathon in January, I had reservations for an 11am-ish breakfast at Kona at the Polynesian. Right after the race, I believe I ate a banana at the finish but nothing else. After walking out of the finish area and over to the monorail, I assumed I'd be plenty hungry for breakfast at Kona. I ordered big. It looked great. I sampled a little of all of it, but regrettably left half of my meal behind. I had been warned that I might not be hungry for a while, but just assumed that could never apply to me. After a real shower, etc. and a tad of rest at Pop Century, we hit EPCOT in the afternoon. My appetite was back in full for dinner at Via Napoli.
