QOTD: The time has finally arrived, it's game week for college football fans across the country! Which team will you be cheering for this year?

I've been MIA for the last few weeks, because life happened. In order of how they happened:

My air went out in my car (covered by warranty, thank goodness)
My grandmother passed away
My son got some virus that had him running his first fever for a week (yes, I have a 4 1/2 yo that's never run a fever)
We drove for a total of 40 hours over 5 days to attend the memorial service (while my son was sick)
My air went out in my house (no warranty, but luckily just a capacitor)

I was able to keep up my running, and my training is going well. We have less than 2 weeks until our trip to WDW

This year I'm struggling with my NFL support. I the Saints, and I will always support them first. Dak graduated from the same HS as me, though. The fact that he's getting his chance to shine in his first year in the NFL thanks to Romo being Romo is awesome. I normally hate the Cowboys, but I have to support someone from my hometown.

I'm sorry you had such a rough time! At least you have kept up with your running. I hope it has been therapeutic for you.

Had a less than great run yesterday. Was on my long run for the week, when a got attacked by a dog about 45 minutes in. I posted pictures, but left them as thumbnails, because some of you may not want to really see. It could have been so, so much worse--could have been my face or one of the dozens of kids usually out there. At first, after the owner pulled him off of me and was trying to check on me, I thought that just maybe I could finish that last 15 minutes. LOL. Not sure what that says about me. (Keep in mind it's on the underside of my arm, so I couldn't actually SEE the bite, and I now realize I have very little sensation along the actual bite mark, so combined with adrenaline, maybe not totally crazy?) I started to walk home and made it about two houses down to another neighbor and realized I needed help.

Anyway, all is well. The bruising is worse than the wound itself, and it was a neighbor's dog with vaccination records, so no rabies shots, just tetanus and antibiotics. I'm determined to go run again this evening (maybe finish that 60 minutes!), but I'm a little more nervous about it as the day goes on.

Yikes! That is terrible! I'm glad it wasn't even worse.

Oh my goodness! Dogs are the reason I carry pepper spray. One of my neighbors has a couple of mastiffs she thinks she should be let out in her front yard unattended. When one attacked me (she caught it just before it got me thankfully), she responded with "What are you doing running down my road anyway." I love dogs, but I will pepper spray them for my own safety if necessary.

Don't you love dog owners who think that if their little angels attack you, it's your fault? My dog does literally look like a little angel, but she has very big teeth and if she felt threatened, nervous, or excited, she very well could bite someone. You know why? She's an animal. A sweet animal, but still an animal. That is why I keep her under very tight control, even though she is small.

I have been away from the boards for a while and it's so hard to catch up! My grandma died on the 18th and we had to drive 7 1/2 hours each way to go to her memorial over a weekend, then I caught the plague from one of the sick kiddos while we were there. I have been totally out of commission since last Monday. Just came back to work today and playing catch up. I have not run since the 18th so playing catch up there too! And I have a job interview (that I have been waiting MONTHS for!) at 8:30 CST in the morning so prayers and good thoughts are appreciated! Hopefully I can make it thru the whole interview without coughing all over them!

But in better news, my Disney family vacation is in 18 days!

I'm so sorry. I'm glad your vacation is coming up soon. Good luck on your interview! I will pray!

In all seriousness, I have never really gotten into college football. Maybe because my college's football program was canceled the year before I got there and never came back (ahhh, state schools lol). Being in California you would think I would have gotten caught up in the hype of USC in the Reggie Bush days ... nope. Don't stone me, but college sports ... I just don't get it. LOL.

I've got a 3-day work week as I get ready for Dumbo this weekend. This run is probably going to be unlike any I've ever experienced since I started running. Life happens and now it looks like none of our friends are even going to be running it this year; and then with injuries I'm not as trained as I would like to be, and possibly still slightly injured.

And with all that said, I'm spending a weekend in Disney, so who am I to complain!!

I kind of went into last year's Princess that way. Please be careful and listen to your body. I didn't and I'm still paying.

Well it looks like we have a nice variety of fans. From time to time during the season we will have to check in on how everyone is doing.

After a lot of off time from running I finally got in back to back running days. Nothing impressive about it, but feels good to get a few miles in. Looking forward to the remainder of the week to see how much I am behind or not.

I haven't really updated lately. I did a new strength training workout. I got really sore for a few days, which I expected. Then I ran, because I thought it would help. However, I am experiencing a lot of back pain now. I have a history of hip/back/sciatic pain, so maybe I wasn't ready for something that strenuous? I don't know. I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever run more than a couple of miles again. It seems like every time I get started again, something else happens.

Scary! That is definitely one of my worst fears as a runner, because it seems like something long time runners experience at least once. I'm so glad you didn't injured worse, though your injuries look plenty painful for sure!

I'm sorry about your back pain. That's so frustrating when you can't pin point exactly why you got the pain in the first place.

I'm seriously considering registering for a half that takes place two weeks after I do Dumbo. A good idea or am I deceiving myself with all that excess energy from tapering?

I did the 5K + GSC, and then did a local 5K and Half Marathon the weekend after. FOR ME - I wouldn't recommend it, as I ended up hitting a wall during the Cowtown Half and finished hurt. It ultimately caused me to defer the NYC Half because my body was just DONE from Dopey, a 15K, all of the Princess Races and then Cowtown 5K/Half (and all of the requisite maintenance runs) in a span of less than eight weeks.

But you know your training, your body and how you respond!

It's possible so long as you don't try to go all out and race each of the races. If it were me, I would go easy on the 10k, race the DL half, and use the second half as a nice leisurely fitness recovery run. I wouldn't recommend going easy for the Dumbo races and trying to PR in the next one. You've already been tapering, it seems, and another two weeks of taper will make it difficult to have a PR-worthy performance.

As I'm sure @Ariel484 knew I would say, start doing yoga. It will give you strength, but more importantly, it will give you flexibility and stretching relief in your back and hips. Runners are very prone to being overly tight in many areas of the body, and yoga will help keep things flexible and loose.

Do you recommend any online streaming programs or DVDs or is there a specific style of yoga you like? The ones I've tried at my gym I didn't feel looser afterwards, I think they were more gentle and meditative. I've looked into some local yoga only studios but their class schedules are not something I can do. I'm a SAHM and the studios I've found have classes for the before and after work crowds, which I get, just doesn't work for me.

Thanks for that link. I've been saying for ever that I need to start doing some yoga, but I've had a hard time finding a class that 1) I think I could actually do and 2) fits into my schedule. This seems like a good way to try it out at home!

I use a lot of the videos from Runner's World because they're focused on specific poses and sequences designed to help address problem areas for runners. I also use some of my wife's lesson plans and modify them to suit the time I have available. The link @JulieODC posted is a great resource as well. I know Gaia has a large number of classes and lessons to choose from on their site too because they gave me a free trial when I bought one of their mats. As for styles of yoga, the only one I do not like is ashtanga. It's too prescriptive for me. I prefer vinyasa and other ones where there is flow between the poses and they're not the same poses in the same order all the time.

QOTD: What goal do you have that seems so far away that you haven't mentioned to anybody because it just seems to be so far out of reach. It could be a time goal / distance / event / ect.

ATTQOTD: One goal of mine that I haven't discussed at length even here, and not at all with anyone I know IRL because its far off from happening and I haven't hit my primary goal yet. That goal is to finish a IronMan. The two that are nearish to me is the Woodlands IM in TX or Panama City Beach, FL. My BIL actually lives in the Woodlands so that one would probably work out the best. I am nearing 33 and my goal is to complete the IM on or before my 40th birthday. By the time I am 40 how many children I have at that point should be old enough to where I could get in the proper amount of training and DW may not kill me.

I've been told that when completing a IM, the marathon isn't nearly as bad training wise as training for a marathon alone.... at least that's what I been told.

I don't have anything particular picked out, but I would love to do a few destination races other than Disney at some point. Maybe something in Hawaii, Australia or one of the larger European Marathons. I'm good for right now, but I like building trips around running so in the future I think it would be fun. I have the BQ goal that many others have as well, although actually running the race if I do eventually achieve the time goal is not that important.
