The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: How often to do you wait to the day of a race or day before to decided to register/run it? Why did you wait?

I've done it a couple of times. I've been dealing with a lot of health issues over the last couple of years, including an injury. I don't always know until right before the race whether I can do it.

I always hate it in the out-n-back races when elite runners come screaming on by on their way back before I'm barely halfway to the turnaround point.

Agreed. I know that in the PHM, the elite runners are not only faster, but they start half an hour before me. It still makes me feel so slow when I've just barely gotten started and they're coming back!

ATTQOTD: Typically plan running events far in advance and have not signed up for a race same day or next day (yet).

Follow up to water/fueling questions....anyone have any good tips for preventing sweat from getting in your eyes? Somewhat hot and humid here in Virginia the past few months.

Headsweats! It's a hat with a built in headband. I get mine from Sparkle Athletic, because they are glittery and cute.

Thanks @Miranda. I have thought about Bondibands but not tried one yet.
I bring a small towel with me when I run, and also use the blue cloth they gave us at the expo at ESPN that stays cool when you get it wet. I also try to run before the sun comes up but the humidity is really bad in the morning.

There is also the Handana. I have thought about getting it, but haven't tried it yet. It kind of goes on your hand like a fingerless glove, so you're not trying to carry something for that.

So, Louisiana is just having a bad 2016 so far. We have a low pressure system that's just sitting on top of us. Some parts of town have +10" of rain in the last 24 hours. Luckily for us our neighborhood was built up high, but a lot of folks aren't so lucky today. It has been a steady rain all day and more rain expected tonight and tomorrow

Stay safe! That's a ton of rain!

ATQOTD: I usually commit to the local 5k runs a month or so in advance. The latest I have registered was the 5k Castaway Key. I hadn't run in over a year when I talked my husband into signing up for it with me (I had brought stuff with to workout in the gym, so luckily had that stuff with), so that was a bit spontaneous. Hot and a nice confidence booster!! There's a 5k tomorrow evening that I may sign up for. I haven't registered yet as waiting to see if the family wants to do it ($45 for family registration). Since it has been pretty humid this week, we'll see how the weather is tomorrow.

I was going to ask how you were doing. Glad to hear you're good.

QOTD:

I normally sign up for a race right as soon as it opens. It's cheaper and I wait all winter to start "running season" again so it feels more real when I am registered for something.

However, I think I may change that strategy going forward. I missed a marathon last year because of injury and this year I am missing two 1/2's and a full because of this &$()*#@ ankle surgery. I looked into deferring my September race and they don't do them so I lost that money. I haven't looked into my October races yet because I don't want to find out I am eating that money too. I think next year I will wait to sign up for my fall races once I know I am healthy and will be able to run them. The only exception I will make is whatever my POT race will be for 2018 Marathon weekend. But I signed up for my fall marathon and this will be two years in a row I will miss it.

Hope things settle down for you soon weather wise. Stay safe!

I keep meaning to order one of those because I have been wearing a visor on top of my bondiband and the visor is tight to begin with. I almost can't velcro it shut over the bondiband... it's very tight. :)

Re: when do you register... I also am an early register-er. A lot of my races I sign up during the early cheap periods or when the registration opens if it is a tough registration (Tink, W&D last year... Covered Bridges in VT this year). The Covered Bridges registration was the most difficult one I have had so far. It opened up in early December for a June race and sold out in 7 minutes for 2300 spots.

Watching the races during the US Trials there seemed to be a lot of tactical racing going on; I guess this is what happens when the field decides to go flat out for the full 10K.

This was the best part of the final, I thought. While I do appreciate a good tactical race, I find I like them more in a marathon than a 10k. The tactical 10k seems to be not much more than hang back, match the first move, and try to outkick everyone at the end. When they throw caution to the wind and go flat out? Now that's some entertaining running.

I always hate it in the out-n-back races when elite runners come screaming on by on their way back before I'm barely halfway to the turnaround point.

In my very first 10k (Monument Ave 10k in Richmond), I was still in my start corral when the winner crossed the line. I could see him on the other side of the median. My goal in most races is to get across the halfway point before the winner finishes. I can usually make it in a half, full, or longer, and sometimes a 10k.

I can't finish a 5K as fast as that. :o That was crazy. She didn't even look like she was working that hard.

QOTD: How often to do you wait to the day of a race or day before to decided to register/run it? Why did you wait?

I normally sign up for races as soon as I can just so that I can get it at its cheapest. The only time I have ever signed up for a race the day before was a few years ago in a local 5 miler I was running with a friend. I realized that I wasn't getting any race day emails from them and then figured out that I had never actually signed up for the race. Registered at the expo and ended up with no race shirt because they ran out and wearing a bib with a dude's name on it because he had decided to run the half instead.

DH always says I moved up here peak SF sports with the Giants winning the title, the Warriors starting to get hot, 49ers going to the Superbowl, and Stanford becoming a good football team.

I loved seeing a picture of all of the Stanford swimmers at the Olympics. They must have such a crazy strong program! Having grown up in NorCal, my ears always perk up when anything is mentioned in the Bay Area or northern valley :)

A completed sporting event can most definitely be spoiled! I enjoy watching European soccer matches, but due to the time differences they often occur while I'm at work (esp Champions League or tournaments like Euro 2016) so I tape the matches so I can watch them later. It is very frustrating when a friend (or even my wife, once) texts me with the results of a match I was planning to watch that evening! I can only imagine it would be doubly likely for something like the Olympics where the events take place throughout the day, limiting people's ability to watch them live.
The Olympics coverage have been so spoiled for me when I forget and look at Twitter and see lots of results. I know the onus is on me to not see results (people definitely have the right to tweet about results in real time!) but it drives me crazy being in a later time zone and seeing it after most people!

BTW, I didn't know if I would get a chance to read this thread on our Yellowstoje vacation, but I had a few minutes and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with you all, getting caught up, while enjoying the cool (almost cold!) air in one of the prettiest spots in the country! ;) :)

@LSUlakes I've got a race to add...

9/10 - @huggybuff - Rock the 80's 10K (Elk Grove, CA) (1:30 / N/A)

This ties into the QOTD about how late do you register for races since this race was just announced a couple of days ago. Apparently they had to change venues from last year and it took quite awhile to put it together. I haven't actually registered yet, but I will next week before the price goes up.

@LSUlakes .....hope your weather improves soon.......you can always come visit us in Virginia if you need a break.

I have a race to add........9/17.....Dulles Runway 10k (Sterling, VA) goal 55 minutes

Day 2 post-sports chiro visit and I finally feel like a normal person again.

Hip pain is still slightly there, but nothing compared to before. Four miles on the treadmill today and feeling good! Gonna hit the trail for a minimum of eight tomorrow - will be my longest run in a couple of weeks!

Yesterday, I was pretty beaten up and in pain EVERYWHERE. Not normal pain, but just like overuse/soreness pain from all the work that had been done to various muscles and joints. Like, Little Dog hopped in my lap at one point yesterday and I started crying - a five-pound dog broke me!

But today? Today is WAY better.

For those curious, I had an adjustment on my SI joint and hips, and then focused sports massage/A.R.T. on various muscles (again, mostly around the SI joint in my back and the TLF(?) around my hips, as well as my hamstrings and IT band on the left side). I've got some serious bruising going on (I bruise like a banana), but other than that - it was the best $100 and 90 minutes I've spent recently.

QOTD: How often to do you wait to the day of a race or day before to decided to register/run it? Why did you wait?

For local races? Probably more often than I should I usually will register on Thursday for a Saturday race or Friday for a Sunday race, mostly so I can see what the weather is going to be like. My second half marathon, I registered three days out because it lined up with the Higdon Dopey plan and I needed to do 13, so might as well get a medal.

Most of the locals I run are 5 or 10Ks thought.
