The Running Thread - 2016

So - I've seen two specialists, I've had a steroid shot and now I'm going for the next alternative to deal with my hip pain.

I'm visiting a sports chiro for ART therapy and an adjustment to see if that will temporarily help my pain.

Fingers crossed that works. Otherwise, it's just battle through the pain - icing, topical solutions, pain meds and sleep aids at night - and then get a steroid shot before each race weekend I have coming up.

I'd rather not do any of that, but I'd also like to sleep like a normal person again as well.

I'll tell you where the Snow White thing came from. In 2014, Anna and Elsa were on the mile 13 marker. In 2015, they were the princesses. In 2015, Ariel was on the mile 13 marker. In 2016, she was the princess. So began a conspiracy theory that the mile marker 13 princess would be the following year's princess. There was never any confirmation from Disney on this and it only happened twice. In 2016, Snow White was on mile marker 13. This led everyone to become convinced she would be the 2017 princess, even when all of the graphics came out with Belle's sillhouette and the roses. But what about the theory? That's all it was. A theory. The graphics, in addition to the fact that the live action movie comes out next year, leads me to be almost 100% certain it's Belle. Then again, I'm not betting anything on it until I hear it from runDisney themselves.
I hope it's Belle if only for my friends who saw the graphics and signed up because Belle is their favorite princess. It would really suck if it had all been a ruse.

Okay so here's a funny story only you all may appreciate - I was taking a Seniors Photos & we were taking them with his State Championship medal (he won his Junior year) and before I knew it I blurted out "out it's so small"...I tried to quickly recovery from being rude with a "oh well it's not small really, I'm just so used to RunDisney medals". Apparently the size of the medals have spoiled me, oops! But it was so tiny and doing like a full arm medal spread with his medals just didn't look as cool as with all the say Dopey medals!

Just Photoshop the medal to make it Disney size.

So, I had every intention of going for a run yesterday afternoon when I got home from work. I walk in and chat with DW and DD about her first day of daycare, and DW says ohhh, by the way something is wrong with the dishwasher. FUN! Open the thing up and its holding water. I gave it the ole college try to repair / unclog it, but nothing was in the way. Did what I could to try to get it to drain and gave it a test run, only to find it full of water again. So I missed my run, and was unsuccessful in fixing the dishwasher. Hoping to have a repair man come check it out today. Fun times!

That's funny on so many different levels. lol

QOTD: Lets discuss running shorts. What do you like or dislike in a pair of running shorts? What are you looking for when you buy shorts?

ATTQOTD: Since I am 6'-5" I prefer not to have the very short versions. Sure they maybe a little easier to run in, but the blinding whiteness from my upper thighs could blind someone. I do like a pocket with a zipper for keeping my truck key in a safe place while I run. I would opt for placing it in a fuel belt bit I am afraid that when I take a GU out the key could fall out without my knowledge. I am also very against light colored running shorts. Thankfully I have never needed dark colors to mask any sort of crazy situation, but its better to be safe than sorry. Shorts are still one of the items like shoes you have to buy so often as they don't give them away like running shirts at races, but wouldn't it be nice if they did. It would be a game changer!

Sorry for the random thoughts thrown in there...

OK, y'all ...

Would you ever report someone you knew to a race director for a serious course-cutting infraction resulting in a a massive PoT improvement. This was only on the half (RnR Las Vegas), but I have a feeling she's going to try it again this year for the full in an attempt to BQ.

She "ran" RnR LV half in 1:58 last year. Her other half times are 3:58, 4:05 and 4:18. I mean, it's pretty obvious she course cut at LV because she has no timing mat segments and no on-course pictures.
this is a tough one. I've don't understand cutting courses particularly if she's already been caught. I probably wouldn't report anything if it's just for POT for corral placement. I would be much more tempted to report something if she was submitting the time to BQ. That being said even with cutting the course it doesn't seem like she's fast enough to BQ.

If I were looking for a legit way to get a better POT I'd just run a 10k and submit that. I think most people can push themselves faster in a 10k than what the McMillan adjustment takes into account.

Something no guy ever wants to hear blurted out ...

ATTQOTD: No running shorts for me is my feelings about running shorts. :) I am 6'0", and women's running shorts are just not made to take that into account, plus I am on the fluffier side of things. Running shorts are always bunched up in some inappropriate places if I can even find ones that fit. I run in Sparkle Skirts in weather where people would be wearing shorts. They are the best! There are 2 big pockets on the sides of the thighs in the compression shorts underneath the skirt, the skirt hides everything I'm trying to not show off, and there's also a zippered pocket in the waist. They actually recently launched a men's shorts line called Spare Parts if there are any guys out there who want to try those out. :) They have the same bottoms under the shorts as the skirts do.

I used to like shorts on the longer side 9" inseams but I am gradually gravitating to shorter shorts, 5" or 7" inseams. I'm only 6'2" so I'm a relative shorty though. I like shorts to have a zipper pocket in the back and pockets on the side. i prefer black shorts that don't have a liner. I primarily wear Nike, Under Armour or Champion Shorts, of those the Nike ones seem to wear out the fastest.

Oh and the key falling out is a legitimate worry. I lost a key to my wife's van that way. It was a $175 mistake.

QOTD: Lets discuss running shorts. What do you like or dislike in a pair of running shorts? What are you looking for when you buy shorts?

Who wears short shorts? I wear short shorts. I mean, with my impeccable legs it would be unfair to the world at large not to have them on display.

In all seriousness, I'm 5'10" and like a 3-5" inseam and don't really like running in anything longer. I used to get a little bit self-conscious about it (because I pictured only "good" runners as wearing shorter running shorts), but now it's just part of running in what feels comfortable.

ATTQOTD: Day to day trainers I'm pretty flexible as far as my running shorts go. I think the shorts I ran in yesterday are actually labeled as Tennis Shorts. Anyway, as I go on longer runs and need to carry gels or keys I like pockets....lots of pockets. My Sunday long run shorts have a zipper pocket (car keys) and pockets that have an overlap to keep the Gu's from jumping out.

There was a run store near our vacation spot in Florida and i found a sweet pair of brooks running shorts for $17 (they normally retail for $50...boom!)

QOTD: Lets discuss running shorts. What do you like or dislike in a pair of running shorts? What are you looking for when you buy shorts?

I am gradually moving towards shorter shorts. I used to run in just generic athletic shorts. I then converted to running shorts with a 7" inseam. Then Under Armour made the stupid decision to put side pockets on most, if not all, of their 7" shorts. This caused me to go up a size due to the way the bunched in my size. Being an Under Armour junkie this really annoyed me. I then bought a pair of 5" Brooks shorts, and have decided I really like Brooks's clothing. They all seem to be quite high quality. I then recently found a pair of 2" inseams on 6pm.com for real cheap. I have been unsure about wearing something so short being 6'6", but for the price I figured I could try them and if I didn't like them it wouldn't be much money lost. I ended up really liking the very short shorts, so now I need to spend more money, gradually though. I like to have the back zipper pocket though I don't use it too much. I hate side pockets. They bunch weird on me. I've never tried the 2-in-1 shorts that UA and some other brands offer with the compression built in, and not sure I ever will. If I need compression I already have an impressive collection of them.

I'm hoping to get back on track with my running and be up to 25-30 miles a week by the end of the month. Just last week I started to get pain in my heel and it seems to have all the symptoms of plantar faciitis YUK! I am really upset as I don't want to stop running but know I need to for a week or two. Any advice for this type of issue? I am rolling my foot over a frozen water bottle, popping ibuprofen, and invested in a sock from Feetures that supposedly will help. Any advice is welcomed as I want to get back to running as my 1/2 marathon is the beginning of October so there isn't a lot of time left to train.

Well I am cautiously optimistic, I have not run in about 12 days, I used everything I could find and was advised by everyone including a Strassburg sock and my foot/heel seems to be on the mend. If it is plantar faciitis I know I can't rush things so I am going to keep off of it for one more week then maybe try some short runs. The good news is I have been nearly pain free for 3 days, I still "feel" it but not shooting pain. I have October 8th circled on my calendar for my next 1/2 marathon so even with this setback I am hoping I can get my training runs in. Thanks for the advice and listening, this is a great forum.

QOTD: Lets discuss running shorts. What do you like or dislike in a pair of running shorts? What are you looking for when you buy shorts?

I am very particular about my running shorts. Wicking fabric, 5-7" inseam, inner liner and pockets are my must haves. I usually end up in Nike, Under Armour or Brooks. I'd use Brooks a lot more if they would put real pockets in their designs instead of just the mini zipper pockets. In cold weather I'll forgo the inner liner and will wear tights underneath for warmth.

QOTD: Lets discuss running shorts. What do you like or dislike in a pair of running shorts? What are you looking for when you buy shorts?

I like breathable polyester shorts with a liner or if they don't have a liner I'll wear compression shorts underneath. I prefer a 7in inseam as anything else feels too short for me. I don't have a preference in color but tend to choose dark colors as they don't show the sweat as easily (see my profile picture). I also think it is a plus if they have pockets as I always will have a key or fuel since I only wear a hydration belt on long runs. I used to run in longer 9-10 inch nylon shorts that were more for basketball or lacrosse but they got "heavy" when wet and also flapped around a bit with all the extra material.

ATTQOTD: I agree with @Miranda, I too have been converted to sparkle skirts. I didn't want to spend the money but after I did I don't think I will run in anything else. They don't bunch and I feel less self conscious in them. They also have the 3 big pockets to hold everything I could possibly need.

QOTD: Lets discuss running shorts. What do you like or dislike in a pair of running shorts? What are you looking for when you buy shorts?
I run in 5" shorts, mostly lululemon and Nike. I tried on a pair of the real short ones once and just couldn't bring myself to buy them...too self concious. They would just sit in my drawer never to see the light of day. This from a guy who regularly runs around in spandex shorts...

ATTQOTD: I am very particular about my shorts. I don't wear loose shorts, because that sewn in panty winds up feeling like it's trying to saw me in half. I only wear compression shorts - the best I've found are Saucony. I was a diehard fan of their bullet short with a 4" inseam, because that's the shortest I can go without winding up with half my rear end hanging out. I purchased their scoot shorts with a 5" inseam this summer, and they are my new fave.
