The Running Thread - 2016

How do y'all time intervals when you're doing training? Every plan for beginners of course suggests to do x mins walking/y mins jogging, and that definitely works for me, but I just wanted to know what your favorite apps were (especially the ones that talk to you/work well when listening to Spotify!) or whatever other kind of methods. I don't want to have to count to 60 over and over while I'm trying to focus!

I use a free app called IntervalTimer. You can set your intervals and have a different sound for each (I like the boxing bell sound when it's time to run). :) And then I also play Spotify music and also use the Nike app to log the runs. I've got a lot running at once on my iPhone!

DH is going to let me borrow his Apple Watch, so I can test it out with the heart rate monitor. My favorite part of it is the Mickey face where he cutely taps his foot for the second hand, but I can't work the thing otherwise. Perhaps a Garmin is in my future?!

Crappy run this morning but those happen. Forgot to charge my watch so got out later then I wanted. But maybe the weirdest thing I've ever had happen to me occurred about four miles into my run - I lost my right contact. So did the rest of my run blind in one eye. Was interesting. pirate:

Also a question - might also be weird. I get cramps in my toes, sometimes while running, but usually after. Had it in both feet today and it was killing me. My dog was I was crazy I was cussing so bad. It's like my toes lock up - happen to any of you guys?

I have had toe cramps before but it was I'm pretty sure from my shoes being too small and my socks being too small. Since I've gone up a whole shoe size and wear a size large sock my toes have been happier, but if I tie my shoe just a smidge too tight my toes will get mad. Apparently my feet grew or I guess they do spread out as one age's.

Yes, but never while running or with shoes on. This happens to me when I am dehydrated - happened to me today about 2 hours after my run. Ran 14 miles in heat + 100% humidity = dehydrated = foot cramps for me.

I'll have to pay attention to my shoes then. Seems to have happened in different types so maybe I need to get fitted again.

July Training Report

Completed/Scheduled

Running Miles - 289.39/288.0 (NEW PR!!!:sunny:)
Running Time - 41:43:03/41:18:11 (NEW PR!!! :sunny:)
Running Pace - 8:39 min/mile

I am beyond ecstatic that I was able to pull this month off. I just PR'd in mileage by 44 miles and time by over 5 hours. Happy to hit all of the scheduled mileage as well. I have definitely seen the benefits of all of this training this month (especially during the summer)! This will likely be the peak of my training for the year, so it's nice to know I had this in me. Also, set a PR in weekly mileage this week at 67.1 miles.

Maybe someday I'll run 335.21 miles in one month, because that's how many miles I ran in the entire year of 2012.

Congrats everyone else as well. So proud of you all. Keep up the great work!

Tomorrow starts my next 12 week training plan! Eeek! I hope this one goes better than my spring one.

I'm trying to get the hang of this whole running easy thing. I think I managed to do about 12:55 for my run this weekend, which is about 60s slower than my intended HM pace. Of course, since I run Tu/Th/Sa, tomorrow starts off with spin cross training, not running. :D

I also think it is the hydration issue. I don't get them in my toes but occasionally I get woken up in the middle of the night with blinding pain from a calf cramp. No rhyme of reason. It's probably just hydration issues. Your body does weird stuff when it doesn't have enough water. It could be the shoes too but I lean toward the hydration given we are mid summer.

I've been reading "How Bad Do You Want It" and wanted to share a couple pages with you guys because I feel like we all could use a little motivation from time to time. So, here goes!

Awesome Keels. Great story. And the last sentence is the best part. There are NO EXCUSES.

So does your wife even recognize you when she sees you. You must never be home. :teeth: Great work.

For me this is what I have been dreading. My results are obviously going to be a joke and I am just having a bad day today anyway trying to accept my situation. I have to hop around on one foot to cook dinner, empty the dishwasher, do laundry, etc... It is slowing me way down and I feel useless. I know I can't help it. I could just sit on the couch and feel bad for myself, and I am not. But to go from planning to run anything from 10k's to a full marathon this year to now be hopping around on one leg is deflating.

Having gotten that off my chest here is my last mileage report until November:

Running: 29.33
Bike: 23.96

While I know I could have done more this month leading up to the surgery I am glad I didn't after the doctor told me just how much damage was done. I could have hurt myself more.

How is it already time for monthly totals!?! July just blew by. I had a good month, especially considering I had a two week vacation and a short taper going into the trail marathon. I finished with 201 miles. I am pretty sure this my first time in the 200's. I will surpass that number in August as I put in some longer runs gearing up for the ultra in September. That race is no longer "in the fall"; now it is next month! Psyched and freaked out at the same time.
