The Running Thread - 2016

Challenge question:

If you're hypothetically placed in Corral A for the half, are you automatically placed in Corral B for the 10k? SWLS Rebel Challenge is asking for POT for the half and I realized the 10k I run for POT is after the deadline. What time do you think would ensure placement in Corral A for both the half and 10k?

Actually, I realized my 10k race from last year still counts (from 10/25/2015 - 45:17), I used it for my Tink corral placement. Should I use it again? Or should I use my Tink half results as POT (1:42:28)?

This is the Star Wars Light Side Rebel Challenge POT to Corrals from 2016. It appears you are easily into corral A with your 1:42 half. You will be in corral A for both the 10K and half without question.

Even if they change the LS challenge to similar corrals as the Dark Side a 1:42 is still well under last year's corral A requirement.

QOTD: What do you often think about when you are out for a run?
Generally I let my mind wander if on an easy run. I listen to music and just relax and let my mind go wherever it wants to go.
When I have a problem to solve, I will "work the problem" as I run. The miles really melt away on these runs.

If I am doing speed work of any type, I focus on my running. I try not to let my mind wander on these runs as that pulls me into a natural pace that may not align with my goals for that run.

QOTD: What do you often think about when you are out for a run?

I try to just focus on what I'm listening to (most often a podcast) or watching (if I am on the treadmill) instead of how the run is going. Some people recommend running without music, etc but I can't focus and my mind wanders too much. I do try and think through stuff I have to get done but I mostly try and get out of my own head and get in a "zone."

I just had to comment on this. When I was first contemplating doing Goofy, people on here would say, "If you can do a marathon - you can do Goofy. It's really only marginally harder to do Goofy than a marathon." I thought they were all big liars. Turns out, they were right. If you are doing a good training plan for a marathon and add in a few back to back training runs so you get a feel for running on tired legs, you'd be surprised to find it's really not that much more difficult than the marathon alone. It's just those early morning wake-ups!!

Just wanted to chime in on the already good responses you have. My biggest advice is to play with the intervals. I firmly believe that everyone has a "sweet spot" on their intervals where their pace is the best and they feel the best running it. The Magic Mile is a great way to get an idea where you should be, but don't be afraid to mix it up. I found that when I decreased my intervals, my overall pace actually got faster. Seemed counter-intuitive, but I was getting too fatigued on the run portion and then not recovering enough on the walk, so I would walk slower and slower as the miles added up and that drove down my overall pace.

I found the same result as soon as I started incorporating the walks. Instead of running a fatigued 11:30 pace toward the end of my runs, I was actually getting faster than my starting miles. I have come to accept how that works, and why it works. Now I have to figure out why adding even more walks would improve this for me. In theory, I feel like I could do 3 minute runs all day long... so that part makes sense. But I also dont want to slow down my times considerably. Watch me run faster than ever tonight and confuse myself even more. Ill try it, and then toy with it and see! Hopefully next week when I get to a Magical Mile and have a time to input for that, I will get some more clarification from the program on that link above.

ATTQOTD: All of the things. Everything. Who needs therapy when I have running. I'm a "shower-thinker" too so it's a lot like that. Coming up with random great ideas, playing weird scenarios that could happen in life and how I'd react, grocery lists, gift-ideas, etc etc.
Also love stalking other people's houses for front door type or garden type or what cars they drive. It's like window shopping. I pick out my faves.
I also will zone out completely for long stretches with zero thoughts in my head too.
The weirdest thing I do to get me past my final miles is do pretend scenarios.
Like I'm in a team relay and everyone is waiting for me at the end of the street...and OMG they see me...and they can't believe I'm in the lead...and someone is coming up behind me....
Lots of weird stuff like that...Once pretended I was being filmed for a running commercial just to keep my head up.

Guys, I'm totally a normal person.

ATTQOTD: I'm going to sound like a crazy person, but I am constantly doing math while I'm running. I am always figuring how much more time I have left based on my current pace. This was much easier when I ran closer to a 10 minute mile pace. Now that I'm in the 8:15-8:45 range my math skills are put to the test.

We were told there'd be no math.

I do similar things on my run. Except instead of figuring out how much time I have I calculate what percent of my run I have left. I play with fractions in my head. It seems crazy, but it definitely helps me for some reason.

Somebody should have told me that early on. Although the other thing I think about isn't much better. I think I've watched too many episodes of Criminal Minds. Between word problems, I occasional plan how I would thwart any would be bad guys. Trust me, nobody wants to kidnap me. I have a plan in place, and it will involve pain for the misguided psychopath who thinks I'm an easy target.

Oh, I do those fractions too!! It's helpful to know when you only have 1/4 of a run left.

Turns out that the ”5K" I did yesterday was not 3.1 miles. They just sent out an email to finishers that the course was .3 miles short! I think there are going to be a lot of upset people by that at least the runners. My Apple Watch was right then when it said we did about 2.8 miles. It was still a great run and I'd do it again.

ATTQOTD: I do math too! I thought I was the only crazy one. I am constantly thinking of what my pace is based on what I am doing right now. How far I would be if I was at a different pace. Sometimes I try to guess where I am going to be at on my route in a certain amount of minutes. I did the fractions on my last long run, I did 9 miles and told myself it was like running 3 5ks(I know 5ks are 3.1 but I figured close enough) so everytime I hit 3 miles I would mentally check off a 3rd. DH tells me I am crazy and that it makes my runs feel longer but I feel like I gotta keep my mind engaged too.

I am about to embark on trying to figure out run/walk with different types of training runs when my Higdon plan starts next week! I know that I will need to figure out my own versions of the intervals, but can you share whether you do longer or shorter ones for each type of run? Like do you use a shorter interval but run harder for faster/harder runs?
It really, truly varies depending on how I feel, the weather, my goals, etc. Right now, the #1 goal is to beat the heat, so I'm doing pretty short intervals for all runs: generally :45/:30 or :35/:30. When it cools off, I tend to like 1:00/:35 or 1:15/:45 for shorter runs and :45/:45 for long runs. I don't do prescribed intervals at all for speed or hill repeats, just do the amount of time I'm supposed to run, then walk easy until recovered before the next repeat. (An exception is a Tabata workout I love, which is a :20 hard effort run/:10 slow 6 or 8 times.) I like :45/:45 for races because it I find it easiest to skip a walk or run as needed to deal with crowds or throw in a surge as needed and then pick back up on the next interval.

Caveat: I haven't actually done Goofy or Dopey yet, but I'm going to agree anyway, lol! I did the 10K and full this year, but did many of my training runs for that back to back because it fit into my schedule better than spacing them out over 3 days. By mile 24ish of the full, I knew without a doubt I could have handled Goofy and probably even Dopey.

ATTQOTD: Not much! I run in a highly populated, developed area, which is great for personal safety, but means constantly keeping track of cars pulling in and out of driveways, crossing intersections, navigating around pedestrians and cyclists, etc. I find that keeps my mind plenty occupied, which is fine - I like the break from thinking about a million things!

Watch me run faster than ever tonight and confuse myself even more.
I wouldn't' be surprised - LOTS of folks find that they get faster with shorter intervals!

I agree with @DopeyBadger, your half PoT will almost certainly get you into A for both the 10k and half. Your 10k time will also get you in A/A, so you can use either.

This is me too. Well, at least the math and the 10 min/mile parts. I'm saving the 8:15 - 8:45 part for January 8... :genie:

This is me! We are running kindred spirits! I think about everything. I stalk people's houses. I do pretend scenarios (often me qualifying for Boston). And the best is when I'm not thinking about anything at all - a moving meditation.

Totally normal, in my opinion. :D

Yeah, I use math and distance remaining to adjust my route. I know the distance to home from several different points on the various routes I run, but may not know the distance of the route as a whole, especially on longer runs. So as I get to the last 1-2 miles on longer runs I figure out where I have to adjust my route and marks to hit to hit the distance as I get close to home. I've only miss calculated that a couple of times, the worst of which changed a 7 mile run to a 9 mile run because I got all sorts of confused as to where I was.

I will do math if I am struggling and want to relax. It works beautifully for me. I do long division, square roots, decimal multiplication or something like that. The more I hurt, the more complicated the math gets. Pretty soon the run is over and I have forgotten that I was in pain to begin with.

ATTQOTD: It depends if I'm running on the treadmill or not. On the treadmill, I'm zoning out on a movie or TV show.

Outside, my mind wanders a LOT. More often than not, it wanders to vacation planning. I'm sure it drives DH crazy when I come home from a run with new plans for far-distant-may-not-happen vacation lol
