The Running Thread - 2016

Go to this link http://www.runrocknroll.com/chicago/the-races/confirm-entry

Enter your name & birthdate and hit enter. Then hit the button to get your confirmation sheet. The 10k corral will be on the top. Scroll down a little bit for your 5k. I submitted pretty conservative times last year when I signed up so our corrals are pretty far back in the pack.
Make sure to print that confirmation page for packet pick up for race morning/expo!

I 100% agree with you on no idea how I will run my 10k. I'm going to Duck Duck Goat with friends the night before and am going to TRY to behave myself....also it's July. But I will cross those finish lines!

I am in corral 6 for the 5K too!!! Corral 17 for 10K. Do you know what your wearing for the 5K? I'm going to wear a purple tank and black shorts.

I tried the Hoka Claytons - they wound up being too stiff for me, but I can attest that they're a very different fit form other Hokas. They are, indeed, wider through the forefoot - I loved the original Cliftons, but that narrow forefoot created way too many blisters! I'm at the wide end of normal width in the front, but have very narrow heels: I had plenty of space in the Clayton's forefoot, but the heel cinched down decently. The cushion is definitely more bouncy than squishy, which I liked. That had been my other issue with the CLiftons: too marshmallowy after a while.
Hmmm, thanks! I may have to check them out indeed. The firm/stiff cushion is what I really like in the Altras.

Woo-hoo...corral twins for 5k! I'll be in black running shorts and an undecided tank top for the 5k. Either teal or purple. Maybe should I just go purple to be completely dorky about it? Haha
I have reddish brown hair, will be wearing a sweaty band and ponytail and glasses.
I can post a pic of my race clothes layout the day before when I'm in the hotel. My bib will say Bridget :)

I really think hubby and I maybe should try for corral change at the expo for the 10k. We seem so far back and our 10k times now are actually better than what we estimated way back when. Just to get started faster instead of cooking in the sun. Worth a try right?

After the Dark Side weekend, TSA took a good amount of time looking at each of the medals I had in my carry-on. They did let me through, but not until after a pretty thorough check.

It's funny how inconsistent those security checks are. I've brought multiple medals through in my backpack after both SWDS and WDWMW with no one even stopping to question it. I will typically take Kind bars or similar with me and on the way back I wrap the medals in facial tissue and pack them up in the empty box. Maybe that doesn't show a signature that triggers a concern in the x-ray.

We're talking about different things, I think! I'm talking about bringing medals from the same race weekend to the final race of the challenge - say, bringing the 10K medal earned on Sat to the Sun race so as to take pics immediately after finishing with all 3 challenge medals. I won't do that because I'm not going to carry that first medal all through the next race, and bags are lost all the time in race bag check, so I won't leave it there, either. I thought that was what was being asked, but maybe I misunderstood?

Sorry about that. I completely misunderstood and thought you were referring to bringing them through the airport.

So after all the people talking about how the medals clang together is annoying, I think one thing is clear. For any challenge, the race medals need to be able to connect together in a Volton-esc fashion to form some sort of Uber Medal of power.

Are pokemon stops during runs acceptable breaks? :) Almost all of my running routes go through downtown, there are so many pokemons and stops down there.

Haha I was pretty tempted to take my phone out of my flip belt and look for pokemon during my run this morning. My kids are dying to find "water pokemon" and I was near a little creek

My bib will say Sharon. :) My blondish hair will be in a ponytail and I'll likely be wearing blue shoes. If I can't find you there, I'll keep an eye out for you in the post race area!

I'm glad you reminded me about the names on bibs - it didn't occur to me that you have a name other than roxymama!

You mean your real name isn't Michigan?
Roxy is what about 75% of people call me IRL but Bridget is my actual first name. Fun facts!

I'll have black shoes with teal/purple on them. There's a good chance hubby will have Orange shorts on since he always has orange shorts on.

I've gotta ask...what is Duck Duck Goat??? I get to Chicago once or twice a year and have never heard of this place, but I'm guessing it is a good time waiting to happen!

Stephanie Izard won Top Chef many years ago and then she opened up Girl & the Goat here in Chicago. It's got a lot of "adventurous" food on the menu but is a really nice place. Then she opened up Lil Goat diner across the street which is "elevated diner food." And she's done other sandwich shops. Now she opened a Chinese restaruant called Duck Duck Goat. It's really hard to get into right now because it's the "cool place." Our friends got reservations finally and it was same day as before the 10k. I am going to steer clear of both ducks and goats though for obvious running-related reasons. If you ever need suggestions...hubby & I are quite adventurous with the foodie scene around here.

For those with a Garmin that has the race predictor, how do you feel about the times it gives you? I had a good laugh, and then said well these are actually near my goals, then laughed again, then thought well at least my watch thinks I can do it.
Below is what the watch says:
5k - 18:48
10k - 39:01
13.1 - 1:26:18
26.2 - 3:00:04

.

Just found the Race Predictor on my watch, and I am laughing as well. These numbers would be a dream to reach (and amazing enough are the exact same as yours!).

5k - 18:48
10k - 39:01
13.1 - 1:26:18
26.2 - 3:00:04

My PRs are:
5k - 21:13
10k - 45:18
13.1 - 1:37:54
26.2 - 3:48:55

So I got some work to do to live up to my watches expectations...

Our actual PR's aren't to far off either. It is interesting how our numbers per the watch match. So I guess its not that unique to the individual as I was thinking...

Yeah, I love to get previous models at Running Warehouse or LeftLane Sports. The Altra Olympus that I stocked up on were from LLS, I got them for $29.98 each!

OMG. Thank you for this. I have never checked these sites for shoes and the prices are great (just Running Warehouse so far) for Altras! :)

ATTQOTD: No expierence with challenge medals yet (Dumbo will be here soon though!), but I imagine I will just do the multi-medal pics at the hotel. I will wear my C2C as SOON as I have it and not take it off. lol

This week we have the following folks with races:

15 - @disneydaydreamer33 - Glow Run 10k (NG / N/A)
16 - @MommaoffherRocker - The Bridge of Lions 5k (NG / N/A)
16 - @roxymama - Rock N Roll Remix Challenge 5k (NG / N/A)
16 - @michigandergirl - Rock N Roll Remix Challenge 5K (NG / N/A)
17 - michigandergirl - Rock N Roll Remix Challenge 10K (NG / N/A)
17 - roxymama - Rock N Roll Remix Challenge 10k (NG / N/A)

Best of luck to everyone racing this weekend. If you would like to revise or set a goal for your race this weekend, just let me know. Looks like @roxymama and @michigandergirl will be toeing the line together for the RNR remix challenge.

This race will be my first night time race. It starts at 11:00pm! If anyone has run a night race and has advice on when to eat dinner or anything else, I would love to hear it! I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty nervous!

The race predictor is solely based on the VO2max number. If you are both 55 then the race predictor will be the same. This is regardless of weight, age, gender or any characteristic.

I did a night trail race once. I would suggest eating something light 4 hours before, and make sure you have a solid breakfast. Is this a trail run?

Speaking of night runs, isn't RNR Vegas a race that starts at midnight or something?

Thanks for the advice. I think I will have a turkey sandwich around 6:30/7:00. The route is mostly on a paved or packed down trail, so I don't think the terrain will be hard to run on.

I looked up RnR Las Vegas and it says it starts in the evening. That race looks like a lot of fun! I have a sister-in-law and sister that both live in Vegas, so I think that will be added to my race bucket list now!

ATTQOTD: I also only wear the challenge medal. And I usually take it off half way through the day because it bugs me that it keep hitting my body.

ATTQOTD-typically wear whatever medal is given out and get a quick post race finish pic. We totally missed the memo about wearing our medals to Downtown Disney the Sunday night of marathon weekend......

QOTD: I have yet to do a challenge but I would most likely shower and get my medals before I did a pic with all the medals, if I even did one. I would also only wear the challenge medal to the parks most likely. Those medals are heavy, if I did Dopey that would be a lot of weight to carry around if I did them all.

Funny story about medals. When I did ToT I wore the medal after the race. I went on RnR and I got hit in the face with the medal when we went upside down. I knew it would happen and yet it still managed to. I went on 3 times so I am happy to report the 2nd and 3rd times I held it tight, no more issues. I was so happy after that race that it didn't bother me though. :teeth:
