The Running Thread - 2016

May Training Report
Total Running Miles - 110.1 miles
Total Running Time - 16:03:07
Average Running Pace - 8:45 min/mile

@Kathymford Speed work can definitely zap me. The key for me is making sure to balance the hard stuff with easy stuff. For every minute I spend doing hard running (anything faster than marathon pace), I spend 4 minutes doing easier running (marathon pace + 40 seconds or slower) on a weekly basis. This helps maintain balance in the plan. My judge for whether any individual workout was too tough was determining after the workout whether or not I could have done one more interval. If I'm doing 4 x 1.5 mile repeats, then when I'm finished I should feel like I could have done a 5th repeat. If I feel completely spent, then I likely trained too hard. If you feel like the speed workout is infringing on the rest of the week's workouts you could consider:

1) Less intervals of speed (instead of 10 x 400, you could do 8 x 400).
2) Increase rest intervals distance or length of time (normal recover with 400m slow running between fast running (maybe extend it to 600 or 800m) or if by time instead of 2:00 try 3:00).
3) Increase the warm-up length to ensure your body is prepared for the speed intervals (you need at least 6 min of easy running minimum before starting sprints).
4) Slow down the speed interval's pace (it's possible you're running your speed too fast and making the workout too tough). The speed of a speed interval depends on the distance you're training for. Halfs/Fulls speed work is likely at 5K pace. 5K/10Ks would have speed at 1 mile or 3K pace (but significantly shorter distance/duration at those paces then compared to 5K paced intervals).

Just finished my last run for May. Here are my stats for the month:

Distance: 127.86
Time: 20 hours 10 minutes
Pace: 9:28

Next week officially starts marathon training season for me. My mileage is going to drop back so I stick with my training plan. Since I have a maintained good base off season, I'm going to use these drop back weeks to work on building my speed.

I volunteered at packet pickup Friday night and drove there after work, parking was $22!!

That's cheap, wow. Maybe because it was a weekend?

He means your maximum heart rate will increase as you learn to apply more power during your ride. You're right by saying your heart rate will be lower for a given effort, but as you become a stronger cyclist, your maximum potential will increase and thus your hear rate zones will rise too. For example, when I did my first FTP test in March, I could ride at 90% of my FTP with a low zone 4 heart rate. Now, after several months of hard cycling sets, I ride at the same 90% of my FTP with a high zone 3 heart rate. I've gotten better so I can hit the same effort with a lower heart rate as you suggested, but I should also change my zones to reflect my increase in potential as the article suggests.

I went to a novice tri camp the first weekend after I bought my bike and had a blast. All of us were new/struggling at one of the three sports which made for great opportunities to learn from each other as well as the coaches. I got just as much applause at the end of the weekend for being able to clip and unclip without falling over (which I did in the parking lot many times) as did the guy who pushed to complete one length of the pool.

That makes much more sense now. Thanks for the help John. I always appreciate it when someone takes so much time to help and I am pretty sure you were one of the biggest helpers on my original thread (ToT 2014) so thanks for your help over the couple of years I have been running.

Catching up on a lot of posts from this weekend.

First and most importantly @Waiting2goback Just want to tell you that no matter what anyone else tells you, you are a beautiful human at this weight or a little more or a little less. And it is admirable that you want to make changes for your health. But if someone who is very negative to you makes you feel like you are not worthy at your current weight or a little less or a little more...I am here to tell you (as an internet stranger) that you are worthy and are perfect at this size (or a little less or a little more or a lot less or a lot more.) If you get the negative comments, feel free to let me know and I'll remind you that you are perfect at whatever weight you are at and that we believe in you to get to wherever you want to go from here :)

@LSUlakes Age group award!!! Woo Hoo. Give yourself a few extra exclamation points on the OP :)

I like the idea of running for someone...but I'm not attending WDW marathon weekend this year (tears.) But I will run for my mom this year when I do my hot chocolate 15k. She will be in Europe on a river cruise that weekend if her cancer treatments finish off as planned next month. She is kicking butt right now and we are 100% hopeful.

IT WAS HOT this weekend and HUMID! My hubby ran a 5k and they gave big bags of ice to all finishers and everyone appreciated it. He did not run as fast as he would have liked due to the heat. But earlier this weekend he did run a 5k out in the hood just as a training run and ran his fastest training 5k yet. I'm going to remind him he's perfect now, even though he is hard on himself and in the middle of his weight loss journey too :)

Roxymama, that was very nice of you to say. I appreciate it. I have shared my story on other threads so I won't bore everyone but I spent the first 40 years feeling worthless. The last couple I have realized I am not worthless at all. I have my faults, and my self-esteem is still lacking in many areas, but I can now recognize some good stuff. Running has played a huge role in improving all of this. But, it is still nice to read the nice things you wrote. Thank you!

Oh I forgot to update everyone on my foot. My diagnosis is that it was just running too long in "shot shoes." I am 100% A-ok to run again at my normal training with "shoes with support and cushion!!" Resting it was what was needed and what I did. check and check
My Ghost 8's and I will be attempting my 5k this weekend. My running over the weekend went pain free and I don't expect to be as fast as I was before resting my foot for nearly a month. But have the green-light to cross the finish line at least :)

I think in about 3-4 months I am going to buy another pair of shoes (especially if I stalk a really good sale) and start being a responsible runner who rotates them in.

Excited that I do not have plantar fasciitis or anything serious.

New shoes is an easy fix. That is great news!

Depends on the toe(s) involved. I have run with what I thought were broken toes as soon as the swelling went down, but never more than one that felt broken at a time, and never my big toe. Just tape them together and off you go.

But I never went to a doctor, so am not sure if they were ever broken. I just know that they hurt.

My big right toes hurts now. It feels broken. I still run. It is all personal preference and what you can tolerate. Buckeye, I know you didn't post the original message but I was just feeding off your opinion.

I don't have access the the bike on a regular basis, but I will on Saturday so I may do that Saturday at least to get something in.

Ugh I'm so disappointed, as I was really hoping to keep up with training and get myself motivated

Welcome to the thread by the way!

@LSUlakes -

26 - SueInBoston - BAA 10K (NG/ N/A)

July
3 - SueInBoston - Finish at the 50 - 10k (NG/ N/A)

I'll be at both of these as well. Have you done either before?

So I let my cold take it's course, and only ran once last week. It seems like I will never go a full training plan without taking one week off. Oh well. A low grade fever was enough for me to call it quits for the weekend. Besides, I wanted to be better for this weekend instead (sshhh .... it's my birthday on Friday!). That's way more important! LOL

May Totals
Distance:32.0 miles
Time: 6 hr, 43 mins
Pace: 12.35

I'm pretty happy with this, although I think the mileage should be higher. I will blink and Dumbo will be upon me!

So, I have a questions about speed training (sprints, speed endurance) ... it's terrible, right? I mean, I feel good that I can go that fast for short distances, but I feel like it zaps me for the whole week. I only do it once a week and for about 20-30 minutes. Is this normal? Or am I doing too much?

I do this and it doesn't even have to be that humid or hot. I overheat very easily and discovered the trick after some article. I don't sweat a lot, or so it seems, and it might be that I'm just always slightly dehydrated, but whatever the reason, the dumping water on my head REALLY works for me. And a visor instead of a hat has been a good tip too.

Happy early birthday in case I forget!

Now for the time I dread the most, the reporting of my monthly miles. After reading some of the numbers you guys post I feel like such a slacker. I realize I had to take it easy because of my ankle but it still bothers me.

52.32 running
26.75 bike

I have only had the bike fixed a few days so that will increase next month but just feeling like a slug right now.

I've done the BAA 10 for the last 2 years, in 2014 it was blistering hot and sunny, last year it was pouring rain, let's see what this year brings...lol

It'll be my first Finish at the 50 altho I've been wanting to do it for a couple years.

I did both last year. If they didn't change the course at Gillette make sure you get in lots of hill training. It was one hill after another. I thought I was going to finish the race on top of the White Mountains. People were swearing because of the hills.

I don't know why, but I feel technologically illiterate when it comes to all this running stuff - I honestly don't know what I'm doing with my garmin 235 half the time. But quick question - how do you find your average pace for the month? If it helps, I have strava/runkeeper/garmin accounts.

Easiest method for me is using the Garmin Connect web interface.

On the side panel click the three slash bars. Choose the Calendar option.

Change the calendar to May.

And look at the bottom bar. It has "Distance" and "Time". Then just divide Time by Distance and you'll get average pace. I do this calculation in excel because I've found it makes it easier for me.

Let me know if this helps.

Dont' feel bad, I'm the same way with my 235. During my last race, I hit the lap button by mistake and totally had a panic attack because I didn't know what it was doing. But now I know what the lap button does, so I guess we will learn it as we go along.

Don't let it bother you and certainly don't feel like a slacker...we are all in very different places and all of our accomplishments are huge accomplishments. remember, "Every Mile is Magic!"

Exactly what I do as well, including the Excel calculation. Only thing is my Excel also converts from kilometres into miles so my Imperial understand it better and don't get confused when my average pace starts with 4:xx...I'm not that fast!

Total miles: 52.73
Total time: 9:55:45
AVG Pace: 11:15

May mileage included two recovery weeks, once every 3 weeks for me. This was my first full month since switching to heart rate training. Pace is definitely slower than I'd like. However, knowing I am getting through runs feeling like I could keep going and recovering pretty quickly, I am happy with how my training is going. MCM Facebook posting tells me 150 days from today - EEK!

In addition to method laid out so clearly by @DopeyBadger you can also get pace information if you go to the Garmin Connect "Reports", then "Progress Summary". That will give you your average speed in mph. I plug that into an online calculator that spits out the min/mile pace.

@DopeyBadger d'oh! Once again foiled by simple math! Good ol' excel - my family is great at knowing its tricks and trades and algorithms, but like a dunce I do everything by hand!

Actually, looking at @camaker 's suggestion, garminconnect does have average pace in the reports section! Phew! Still don't have to pull out that calculator!

I wonder if speed work / recovery messes up the average pace though.

Anyways, average monthly pace: 8:53 (tada!)

QOTD: Since today is National Running day, how far do you plan to run today? Doing anything else to celebrate?

ATTQOTD: Well its going to get kind of interesting. I had trouble sleeping last night, so I did not wake up to run this morning and my bosses retirement party is after work today. So my only hope is to run sometime before 10:00PM tonight. I will be happy if I just get 3 miles done.

By the way, amazon has some Saucony products as their deal of the day - including zealots for $62.50.

@LSUlakes - thanks for the reminder about Running Day - a half marathon I had my eye on is giving a discount today! Maybe some other races / running stores will have deals too! Also, good luck getting a run in! Anything is better than nothing!

ATTQOTD: I got a groupon for a barre class, so I'm trying it out this morning. Luckily it doesn't interfere with my planned 3 mile run this afternoon. I might even be able to squeeze in a mile or 2 before and after the class!
