The Running Thread - 2016

My wife will be fine. She was very fortunate to just sustain scrapes, bruises and strains. She hurts, but nothing is broken. If by sharing, even one injury is prevented, it will be worth it. I consider us all friends here and I don't want you or your families to have to deal with something like this.
So glad your wife will be okay! I live in a high tourist/high retiree area with some of the worst traffic congestion in the country and very high rates of pedestrian accidents. The big, busy roadways aren't as scary to me as the myriad driveways and store entrances - drivers just do not look both ways at those. After so many years of walking and running around here, it's just second nature to look over my shoulder, as well as ahead, at every. single. driveway. before running past them. Plus an ID/med bracelet. Plus leaving a note at home telling where I'm running and for how long.

QOTD: What are your running goals for the summer?
ATTQOTD: Same as always: no heat stroke! :thumbsup2:banana::cool2:

@camaker that's scary, glad she is ok!

ATTQOTD - Goals for summer - recover from all injuries (although the piriformis & sciatic pain just seems to linger so I guess continue to learn to avoid flare ups is more likely), build mileage back up without angering the shin splint/knee pain flare ups, build speed back up to hit my goal for Wine & dine 1/2. I love summer running (in Nebraska)!

ATTQOTD: Mainly just some base building this summer. My race schedule is fairly light... after my last HM of the spring (which is technically in the summer) on 7/9, right now I just have planned a 5K on 7/24 and a 10K on 8/18, both parts of the local race series I am doing... well, and a 5M on 9/10. I guess that is technically still summer, too, even though I think of summer as just being July and August. :) I will be doing at least one fall HM, possibly 2, so training for those will start in late July or August sometime. I haven't quite made a plan yet, but the definite HM is 11/13 and the tentative one is 10/23.

I am looking forward to building a better base for fall racing than I did over the winter and early spring for the spring racing, and just enjoying time with our new puppy that we got at the end of February. We're starting agility classes with her in 2 weeks and we want to get back into some hiking. I am also looking forward to fitting yoga back into my schedule because it fell by the wayside the last couple months with the puppy crazyness and then my lazyness.

QOTD: When at Disney, but not for a running event, what are some good running routes you have run or heard of? Can you run on the shoulder of roads?

I've personally run at Saratoga Springs (nice view of Disney Springs along the lake), POR/POFQ, and the Epcot/DHS/Epcot resort loops and enjoyed all of them except that I wish they were a bit longer. Like others have said here, I would never run the roads on property because of the high risk of accident.

QOTD: What are your running goals for the summer?
Try to finish all runs before it's too hot, avoid the heat as much as possible, and also work on speed/hills during the week with long runs on the weekend. I may up my runs to 4 times/week, but I lost my running partner after Dopey (she stopped running altogether) so it's getting harder and harder to not hit that snooze button in the morning. So I guess an added goal would be to remain consistent and motivated!

QOTD: What are your running goals for the summer?

To both survive AND enjoy my aggressive training plan I just started this morning to prepare me for the 10/9 Chicago Marathon. In the past, I've been a little more relaxed with my summer running... humidity sucks! Anyways, I'm not gonna let that happen this year. Big thanks to DopeyBadger for his input.

@camaker Thinking good healing thoughts for your wife. I often try to explain to people one of the reasons I do not like running at night in my neighborhood is because I cannot see the drivers to see if they are waving for me to go or if they cannot see me. I am going to be super careful in the daylight too because of your story since I'm sure sometimes I feel more invincible than I should.

ATTQOTD: My summer goals were originally to be fit enough to complete my first challenge running at a good race pace for me. Now with my little foot injury setback I am changing my goals to A) heal my foot, B) stay active in the mean-time and C) still complete that challenge even if it means a total mind change from being speedy to just crossing those finish lines in a healthy way :)
Oh, and to embrace all my tank tops even though I get self-conscious about my arms (for no reason) :)

Is this the back road we ran for the marathon?
Nope, that road "connects" Magic Kingdom to Animal Kingdom, while this road is just some sort of service road behind Animal Kingdom Lodge with a service vehicle parking lot and a field with a bunch of trailers.

On another thread, I posted these running routes in the Boardwalk/Hollywood Studios area. In March (Spring Break), when I was training for the Star Wars Dark Side Challenge, I ran 52.5 miles at WDW over eight days. Here are the three training routes I used from the Yacht Club, but they are applicable to anybody at Yacht Club, Beach Club/BCV, Boardwalk Inn/Villas, or Swan/Dolphin:

4.9 mile route: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1099252184

6 mile route (same as 4.9 mile route but adds a loop around HS parking lot): https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1090526683

7 mile route (same as 6 mile route but adds out/back on sidewalk along Buena Vista Drive and an additional loop around HS bus station): https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1093614512

So, for 10 miles, I just did the 4.9 mile loop twice plus a little more around the Boardwalk. For my 14 miler, I did the 7-mile loop twice.

I don't believe you can run on shoulders of the roads.

I love running the resorts but wouldnt be caught dead running the roads

As for running on the shoulders at WDW - what shoulders? Take a closer look next time. There are no shoulders. If you run in the streets, you will get killed by the buses.

Like others have said here, I would never run the roads on property because of the high risk of accident.

I agree with all folks above about NOT running on the roads at WDW. There is no shoulder, it is unsafe to run in the deep grass with its varied terrain underneath on the side of the road, and they have more buses than mosquitoes (and, yes, I had to look up if there was an "e" in mosquitoes).

That being said, I would like to point out that the Epcot Resorts/HS routes I posted earlier (the first post quoted above), the big loop on Epcot Resorts Blvd does have a sidewalk all the way around, so these routes do not have you running on any roads (except around the HS parking lot which is safe as long as you stay just inside the parking lot cones).

ATTQOTD: Just get through the summer. South Texas heat makes it challenging to do more than hit conservative paces and I've found if i try to push it I just get worn out and grumpy. So, it will be very much a maintenance mode kinda summer.

To make a really long story short, my ex stepdad is going to be taken off of life support within the next 24-36 hours. There is a lot of family drama, mostly because of my mother, we don't have all the information, and what information we get from my mom is unreliable anyway. I left work yesterday to say my final farewells so his biological children and grandchildren can spend as much time with him today/tonight. If yall could send some prayers that he may not suffer and that his family can find peace I would appreciate it.

ATTQOTD: This summer I will be gradually ramping up my mileage for the Halloween themed half I am running in October. I am going to try and stay consistent with the cross training I have been doing (Ballet barre, zumba, lifting, and pilates). I hope I can keep them all up!

I'm so sorry. Prayers and good thoughts definitely coming your way!

Sorry to hear that, hoping and praying they find peace. Hope you're doing okay too :(

I am kind of giddy excited because my hubby just made a reservation to stay a night in the city for my challenge weekend this summer. So I'll run my 5k, we stay overnight and then I run my 10k. And the hotel is attached to the expo and has a shuttle to the start line. So even though I won't be breaking any world records or PR's (unless something miraculous happens with my foot) I will at least be able to live the good life that weekend. Because we also have a reservation that night with our friends at a hard to get into place called Duck Duck Goat (Stephanie from Top Chef owned.) Eeeeeeeeee!!!! (I will not be eating Duck or Goat prior to any races though, fyi)
This is exciting since I'm in WDW withdrawal and this will be closest thing I have to a disney race weekend minus the disney.

Now we just need to talk any of the grandparents into housing the kiddo for us that night.

I bought myself a road id band, but I when I fitted it to me, I cut it too short and now it's a bit uncomfortable for a run. This is a good wake up call to get that taken care of!

Thanks! I did the same thing with my RoadID band. Thought I'd measured properly and it ended up snugger than I'd like. It's still usable, though. One of these days I'll get around to ordering a replacement.

One option is to get the Shoe Road ID such that fit isn't an issue. However, there are some potential downsides: (i) you may need multiple Shoe IDs if you rotate shoes (unless you want to be transferring the Shoe ID all the time), and (ii) there is a higher likelihood that paramedics might not see the Road ID if it's on your shoe vs. your wrist. Just wanted to throw that out as an option though.
