The Running Thread - 2016

@LSUlakes I am really sorry to hear that. I hope my above post did not seem insensitive (being all happy) since I missed your post above. I'm praying for you and your family!

To make a really long story short, my ex stepdad is going to be taken off of life support within the next 24-36 hours. There is a lot of family drama, mostly because of my mother, we don't have all the information, and what information we get from my mom is unreliable anyway. I left work yesterday to say my final farewells so his biological children and grandchildren can spend as much time with him today/tonight. If yall could send some prayers that he may not suffer and that his family can find peace I would appreciate it.

Will do @LSUlakes. Sorry to hear this.

QOTD: What are your running goals for the summer?

Do whatever my coach puts on my schedule.

I hope he, you, and your family suffer as little as possible over the days and weeks to come.

Sorry to hear that. I'm sending thoughts and prayers. My grandma has pancreatic cancer and it's at the point where it's going to be any day now where it might be her last. It's never easy losing anyone.

QOTD: What are your running goals for the summer?

My summer goals are to completely transition back to full running from run/walk intervals and complete the initial stages of my customized marathon training program (thanks @DopeyBadger!).

I've also got one more half marathon coming up on June 18th and I'm hoping to take a run at sub-2:00 for it.

@LSUlakes hoping for as much comfort and peace possible for you and all involved.

Are you doing the Run 13.1 in Roanoke?

ATTQOTD: Get in a solid training cycle without injury so I hopefully PR in my fall half. Also I guess I'll need to learn more about HR training as opposed to pace training since my coach has me doing some runs that way. Kind of confused right now.

ATTQOTD: Summer Plans. #1 Survive. #2 and more. Ramp up base miles and try to get some speed back. Being off for 32 days, and getting back to it has been really difficult, and with the heat/humidity, it is really painful to run hard. With two weeks in Europe coming up, I am not going to work too hard on speed until late June

Are you doing the Run 13.1 in Roanoke?.

Yes, I am. The Roanoke race fit much better into my travel and training schedule than the Charlotte race. Are you going to run it?

Also, is there something big going on in Roanoke that weekend? Hotels were much more expensive for that weekend versus the surrounding weekends and availability was a bit hit or miss.

That is where we are staying and finally found a map... sort of. It looks like if you run the lake and the resorts you can get 2-3 miles per lap maybe? Anyone with a GPS map of a run they can post?

Yes, you can definitely get more mileage by adding the resort paths.

This is not specifically running related, but I wanted to share because I think it's applicable and easy to lose track of as we focus on our training goals, distances and paces while running. My wife is a HS principal in downtown Raleigh. As a result she has to park in a lot about a quarter mile away and walk in. Today as she crossed the street in front of her school in a crosswalk, with the light, she was hit by a car making a left turn with a driver looking for a parking space and not paying attention to what was in front of her.

Most, if not all of us, have to cross streets with or without lights and crosswalks during our running. I just want to emphasize how important it is to maintain situational awareness of the cars around us, regardless of the presence of a crosswalk, walk signal or traffic light. It just takes one stranger not paying attention to cause serious injury. When I come to an intersection with a car while running I try to make eye contact with the driver before crossing. Still, I've had a close call or two when my mind wandered and I didn't make sure to do that.

I'll also throw out how important it is to carry ID when you run, just in case. Keep in mind, too, that you may not be able to respond if an accident happens. I won't run without my Road ID. Whatever type you find you like, use it.

My wife will be fine. She was very fortunate to just sustain scrapes, bruises and strains. She hurts, but nothing is broken. If by sharing, even one injury is prevented, it will be worth it. I consider us all friends here and I don't want you or your families to have to deal with something like this.

Sorry to hear that - hope she is okay. In my daughter's karate class they always say that the number one rule of safety is being aware of the space around you.

I don't see anything going on but they get a lot of youth sports tournaments around here so you never know. There is a Bike Fest that whole weekend but I couldn't tell if that's a major event. Where are you staying?

Not planning on running it right now. Thought about it but will have to see if it fits the running schedule.

ATTQOTD: This summer I'm going to focus on building more weekly mileage and try to survive summer marathon training - they are saying it's going to be a hot & humid one. :crazy2:

@LSUlakes Hugs to you and your family.

I'm staying at the Fairfield Inn in the north of town. The hotels near the race site either looked like dumps (Ramada) or were $200+ per night.

@camaker I'm very glad to hear that your wife is ok and that healing is as swift as can be. My 80-year-old mother is a crossing guard for an elementary school and gets very angry at how little parents in cars pay attention to her (or anyone else, really) even in her bright yellow jacket and giant stop sign with a flashing light at the top. "I should be allowed to give tickets!" I'm pretty sure she cusses them out in Italian that she claims to have long ago forgotten. :)

@LSUlakes My thoughts are with you. Family drama makes everything hard, let alone losing someone.

ATTQOTD: My plan is to continue working on my speed, while stretching my running interval. It is possible to do both, right? :)

I know I've just started this (doing speed work), but I am questioning my sanity of doing Dumbo. Maybe I should have just stuck with the half. My original plan was to put everything I have into the 10k so I can have a good POT to last me a few more years (my last good one is getting old, Jan 2015), and then just "enjoy" the half. But I am so tired after my speed days that I'm wondering if I'll have anything left for the half. At least it's still a few months away ...

And, out of nowhere, I now have a sore throat. Felt fine all day and then all of a sudden a few hours after my run: sore throat. Odd. Maybe it's allergies .... yeah. Let's go with that!

Sorry to hear this happened, but glad to hear she is going to be ok. Like others have said, I know longer trust any motorists. After too many close calls, I never enter intersections or pass driveways unless I am clearly waved by the driver to do so. I've made eye contact with drivers, who then just kept going. A few weeks ago a woman even smiled at me I assumed she meant I could go, but as I began to step forward, she drove right by me. I never go out without my road ID, and suggest them to all the runner and cyclists I know.

I hope the next few days bring some peace to everyone. I will keep you in you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

ATTQOTD: My summer will be all about staying healthy and building up my mileage. I am doing a very slow build of both my weekly mileage and my long run distance to try to ward off injury. I expect to add a few races, likely 10ks, but won't until I feel certain of my progress. I am getting more and more excited about MCM though. They posted a picture on Facebook today of marines sitting around a table planning logistics and it gave me a big smile!

@camaker - That's so scary about your wife. I'm glad she is okay.

@LSUlakes - I'm sorry about your ex stepdad. I hope he and the rest of the family can find peace.

ATTQOTD: Summer goals are just to work through the training plan for our fall marathon and then January Goofy. It was ridiculously humid on our run this morning and at times I wondered how the heck I was going to manage long training runs this summer when the heat and humidity really kick in.

The Ramada is definitely a dump. Let me know if I can be of any help about Roanoke.
