The Running Thread - 2016

Haven't needed to run doubles yet. We'll see though. My training plan for the upcoming cycle averages 62 miles for the last 16 weeks and peaks at 71 miles but I'm still sticking with 6 days per week and one run per day. If things don't work out with this plan, then I'll reconsider my options.
That's some impressive miles you plan on getting in. I am slowly working up towards 35-40 a week during the summer. very slowly...

QOTD: How do you feel about running doubles? Do you run them because of a lack of time to get the total miles required for a day? Training plan calls out for doubles? Only need for high mileage runners (60 MPW or more)? If you do run them what is your approach?

I did last Dopey training cycle, mostly because I needed to ramp up mileage after I got hurt - but a lot of it had to do with weather and my schedule (ie. I didn't want to run 17 miles in the middle of the day during 100-degree weather).

I'm trying to avoid it this time around as a substitution for long runs, mostly because I'm making more of an effort to change my sleep schedule to that of a normal person and I'm allowing myself to be WAY more flexible with what days I do runs rather than thinking that it has to be done in a specific combination. So, say I can't fit do a 17 miler on Saturday and my options are move it to Wednesday or split it into two sections, then I'm going to move it to Wednesday.

However, right now, I'm leaning towards doing two days of doubles a week for about a month - hill or speed session in the morning, and then a easy three or four miler in the afternoon - just to loosen up and really try to ramp up speed. Plus, it gives me something to do on days when I get bored and gets me out of the house.

I have never run doubles, but I have given some thought to doing them for some of the later, longer mid-week training runs on Higdon's marathon plan. I'm not sure I can carve out the time for 8-10 miles in one session mid-week. The closest I have come to doubles is playing Ultimate Frisbee at lunch and then running in the evening. It's like combining an interval workout (lots of sprinting in Ultimate) with a normally-paced run later.

QOTD:

I've done lower mileage doubles, like 3/4 in the morning and 3/4 in the evening. Mostly because of time issues, and hours of daylight. I have a feeling they might creep back in during marathon training.

Me too, minus the Frisbee part. I've never run doubles but I'll be starting a Higdon plan soon for my fall marathon and I'm going to have to break up those longer midweek runs. I can only get in about 5 or 6 miles in the mornings just due to time constraints and I'm not getting up any earlier than 4:20. I figure I can hammer out the rest later in the afternoon while my daughter is at karate. That's my plan anyway, hope it works!

ATTQOTD: I've never done doubles. I imagine I would need to do some though if we pulled together a relay team. :)

#DISRunsRagnar!!!!! Let's do it!!!!

If we're doing a relay together, I vote for this one. What beats running down the coast of Maine?

I'd be interested in this...

Oh boy, the pressure is on!

I would love to do a Ragnar (or some other relay) one day...I've been itching to do Ragnar Florida Keys one day, assuming it returns. You'd have a tough time convincing me there's a better place to have a finish line party than Key West! As long as we could time our finish to coincide with Happy Hour at Alonzo's so we could fill up on oysters and beer, I would then be a happy boy :drinking1

This relay always looked fun to me... Bend Beer Chase. It's only 6 people max (instead of 12), so (i) the entire team fits in one van (i.e. you don't have to mess with van vs. minor exchanges), and (ii) you complete it within one day (so you don't have a night of 2 hours of very questionable sleep). PLUS, after the 70-mile relay race (although it appears to be only about 50 miles this year), the entire team runs a 2.8 mile keg leg together during which you stop at seven breweries for taste-testing and games. Now I have your attention, don't I?

My wife reminded me that I am doing doubles now since I run with her and her friends 3 days/week, then do my own run afterward. Since I only take about a 5 minute break between the runs, I consider them a single instance. And since their pace is so slow right now, I don't count the miles. But at some point I will need to break them up and the mileage will count, so I guess that I will be running doubles through the Dopey. :upsidedow

ETA - my VO2 is up to 45, so my recovery progress continues. :thumbsup2

Please don't kick me off the board, but I have to confess that I neither like nor drink beer.

Now I know what I've spent my whole life preparing for ...

QOTD: What type of device do you use to track your runs? What do you like and dislike about it?

Still doing Runkeeper on my phone! I wish it could track distance better in stop watch mode or track distance on a treadmill; it only can do it via GPS. It has it's pros & cons. I like that it has challenges frequently!

QOTD: What are your top 5 Bucket List races in order of importance? They can be any distance for any reason.

1. Tinkerbell Pixie Challenge - hopefully 2017; I really think this race looks fun and I've never been to Disneyland. I also want to earn the pink C2C medal.
2. Walt Disney World Dopey Challenge - aiming for 2018!
3. Rock n' Roll race - anyone really but New Orleans looks rad.
.....

I have been using the free version of Runkeeper for a while. Agree that it gets the job done for most activities and has been useful. Mine used to track steps but now it doesn't. But definitely getting my $$$ worth!

Want to do a RnR race (or several) too. Heard New Orleans is awesome. And Memphis. And Vegas.

Glad you are still on board for Dopey 2018...............it will be amazing.

That's awesome! From my recollection, that's a 15.3% improvement since Mid-March. Keep up the good work and you'll be back in no time!

No doubles for me. I'm the type who HAS to shower after a run bc I feel all gross if I don't. So limiting the amount of time have to do that per day is a plus. Also hard to find time for two runs.
Also I recommend the Amika hair mask for anyone who gets really dry hair from too much washing or drying :).
