The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What are your top 5 Bucket List races in order of importance? They can be any distance for any reason.
1. Dopey - I feel like this would be the end all be all accomplishment for my running
2. 26.2 with Donna - My mom and grandmother both had breast cancer so supporting the research is huge for me
3. The Navy Nautical 10miler - My father and grandfather both served in the navy so...
4. Marathon Du Medoc - Because I like wine. And food.
5. Any Marathon. I would like to finish a marathon one day.

Also did I hear there's a disboards relay team (especially Ragnar) because I'd be in.

ATTQOTD: I don't know if I really have a bucket list. I like to do destination races and enjoy scenery. :) Doing a relay is something that I would like to try... I think the last time there was a thread like this on the boards I mentioned I would like to do Reach the Beach sometime, but I don't really have any runner friends in real life, just one. That's a relay here in NH that goes from the mountains to the beach... it might actually be a Ragnar race now, I'm not sure (it wasn't originally).

I might be interested in a relay if there was a team for turtles and it wasn't too far away. ;)

I have high school friends on Facebook that have done Reach the Beach the last few years, and it looks like so much fun! But I am with you, I don't have enough running friends to do it with. The few I have are so much faster than me I'd never ask them to be on a team. When life calms down someday I am hoping to join a running club, and then maybe take one of these relays on, you know, with new friends I don't have yet;)

Understand. That is the same as The Golden Gate Relay and Hood to Coast, BUT we can still give @CheapRunnerMike the longest set of legs (although we should probably get him to commit first).
Oh boy, the pressure is on!

I would love to do a Ragnar (or some other relay) one day...I've been itching to do Ragnar Florida Keys one day, assuming it returns. You'd have a tough time convincing me there's a better place to have a finish line party than Key West! As long as we could time our finish to coincide with Happy Hour at Alonzo's so we could fill up on oysters and beer, I would then be a happy boy :drinking1

Of just join a group of total strangers.

I didn't even realize they had discontinued the Keys relay. Any idea why?

Edit: googled it and wow they had cancel it after already selling it out because they couldn't get a permit. Ouch.

I see you've done Shamrock. Best after run deal I've seen. Four free beers!

At least 4. They are more generous with free refills as the afterparty is winding down. All of the J & A races have been generous with the swag and the alcohol. They are fun events.

QOTD: How do you feel about running doubles? Do you run them because of a lack of time to get the total miles required for a day? Training plan calls out for doubles? Only need for high mileage runners (60 MPW or more)? If you do run them what is your approach?

ATTQOTD: I don't mind them, but rarely do them. The school of thought on my end is its a way to achieve high number of miles in a week. I am not at that point at this time so I rarely run twice a day. On occasion I do, usually the second run is at a much more relaxed pace and treated as a recovery run. Today for example I ran 6 this morning. I will work out legs during lunch, and then after work I will try to get another 2-3 miles in to help with the soreness. So my total for the day isn't that high whereas a runner getting 70 miles in might run two 10 milers in one day. One reason it could be useful for a non high mileage runner is if you are training for a relay endurance race (Ranger type). Then you are just preparing your body for multiple runs a day to prep you for race day/days.

The only time I run doubles is when I am watching a game at night and need something positive to do to deflect some adrenaline. It also helps to have done something positive when my team inevitably loses.

I've never done doubles, but my coach wants me to for my MCM training. I'm so prone to injury he sees it as a way to get in more miles safely. I have my first one in a couple of weeks, so we'll see then how it goes.

I very rarely run doubles and haven't in a while, but if I do I almost always make sure that one of the runs is on the trail to save my legs from the pounding they take on the roads. There's enough workouts to go around with triathlon training that there's no need to run twice in the same day!

ATTQOTD: Pfitzinger's had them in the plan I did for my December marathon. I think the primary reason was to help hit some of the higher mileage weeks while preventing burnout.

I like them especially during the middle of a training cycle when those longer runs start to become a mental grind. If i could force myself to get up in the morning I'd probably incorporate them more into my running.

Yes, training for a relay is the only time I have done two-a-days.

QOTD: What type of device do you use to track your runs? What do you like and dislike about it?

Still doing Runkeeper on my phone! I wish it could track distance better in stop watch mode or track distance on a treadmill; it only can do it via GPS. It has it's pros & cons. I like that it has challenges frequently!

QOTD: What are your top 5 Bucket List races in order of importance? They can be any distance for any reason.

1. Tinkerbell Pixie Challenge - hopefully 2017; I really think this race looks fun and I've never been to Disneyland. I also want to earn the pink C2C medal.

2. Walt Disney World Dopey Challenge - aiming for 2018!

3. Rock n' Roll race - anyone really but New Orleans looks rad.

4. Sleepy Hollow Half Marathon - only because it's in the historic town of Sleepy Hollow!

5. Walt Disney World Castaway Cay 5k

I haven't quite ventured outside of the run Disney races on my bucket list all that much. There are a few races I would be interested in but I'm not quite sure they've made my actual quote on quote bucket list yet.

ATTQOTD: I've done them to deal with the FL summer heat: 2 25-minute runs - one AM, one PM - take less of a toll on me than 1 40-50 minute run in the heat, especially if I make one of the two a pool run. I've broken up long runs that way, too, but with no real break between, just long enough to change into a swimsuit or towel off enough not to electrocute myself on the treadmill. None of my training plans specifically call for doubles, though, and I can't say that I find them any more effective than single, sustained runs. It's really all about minimizing heat stress for me.

Ran doubles a lot when I was in the Army. Because I was so young recovery was not a problem. Serious improvement when running doubles. I don't do them anymore because I have learned to really love long runs.

I've never done it. I don't think I would be opposed to doing but I've never really had to. It just works out best to run once a day when I can which is usually in the afternoon.

Never done them. Mentally that seems tough, like my whole day would be planned around running.

ATTQOTD: Have not run any doubles, except for relay races. I am able to get my distance in one run for workouts. At my peak I was hitting about 50 MPW. This might go higher in my next marathon training cycle, which might cause some doubles

Haven't needed to run doubles yet. We'll see though. My training plan for the upcoming cycle averages 62 miles for the last 16 weeks and peaks at 71 miles but I'm still sticking with 6 days per week and one run per day. If things don't work out with this plan, then I'll reconsider my options.
