The Running Thread - 2016

You won't be able to tell when you are there in January. The joint is gonna be rockin'. :rockband:

True story! And I'm a Run Disney NOOB for the most part, too. I had a blast at the Princess Half this past February and I'm looking forward to Wine & Dine 2016. I did decide to not participate in the WDW Marathon Weekend 2017, because it does get expensive with all the registrations & traveling. Fortunately I'm pretty much a local.

The article has some valid points but I think the races are what you make it for the most part.

Oh! Today's my birthday! Whoop!!

And for the QOTD: I hope to be a volunteer for the WDW Marathon that weekend.

Don't worry, for all those that are 'burnt out' & saying they are done with RunDisney there's new people like you getting into it. Most people have to pick and choose race weekends where some of those getting burnt out have done practically every race weekend. You'll have a blast & good luck!

totally agree with @cavepig.....Wish I could run all the races but I am in the pick and choose category due to juggling work, teenagers, vacation times, and budget. The only RunDisney burn-out I have experienced is with my wallet!!

Excellent perspective.

Okay now everybody sing along......

Happy Happy birthday!

We wish it was our birthday,
So we could party too.
O-lay!

Have a great birthday @Princess_Nikki

Would anyone run a half marathon on a path in the middle of the Everglades with alligators right there that can come and go right on the path with you?
I'd been waiting for them to announce the date! It won't work out for me this year, but it's definitely on my radar. I live in coastal FL and run nature preserves and a golf course often: gator city. I've only ever encountered one on my level (as opposed to down in the water) once, though - it looked like a downed palm tree and didn't attract my attention at all until I was maybe 4' away and it suddenly threw itself into the water hazard. I'll admit I yelped out loud, lol! Are the Shark Valley gators so used to people that they don't flinch? I was kind of thinking they'd scatter into the 'Glades with all the commotion of a race going through.

I guess I am just wondering if people are starting to expect more for their money on these races and that's why they aren't selling out quite like they used to?[/
I read it the other day. Meh. Let me be clear: I am far from a Mouse apologist and I give WDW no quarter when it comes to stupid business decisions. And there are things rD could improve upon - the busing to EP after the Dark Side 10K and Half was beyond awful. But overall I think rD's doing a pretty good job. I really think the races not selling as fast thing is due to he overall racing phenomenon easing back a bit; I feel like it hit a peak a year or two ago and was bound to slow down a bit. rD's pricing is high, but you get an awful lot for that money, if you choose to take it. Want wide, easy courses on which to speeeeeed, find a race that doesn't go through theme parks, lol!

Today is my last day in the office before the move, so my time online will be limited due to the many task I need to take care of.

This week we have the following folks with races:

That sounds like fun. Might make everyone run faster too. PRs for everyone.
I run a lot in South Carolina and have encountered many snakes (Why did it have to be snakes?) and gators during early morning and evening runs. Just give them a wide berth and no worries.

I would definitely seek out advice from a medical professional, either a podiatrist or a sports medicine doctor. The can take any necessary images and/or recommend PT depending on what they find.
Thanks! Off to the podiatrist tomorrow :thumbsup2

I think there area couple of things here, and the first is the Disney collectors phenomenon. Disney fanatics want to be the first of ANYTHING to do with Disney and will do these races just to get it. The first year of Dumbo was a madhouse and thus, maintained its popularity for the first couple of years. Now that people have had a few years to get their shot at Dumbo, the novelty has worn off. As they added challenges to other races, the same thing has happened.

I also think the competition has grown at other races: better medals, expos, etc. More and more you I am seeing challenge medal options at other races for far less than you pay at Disney. And as we all know, we can't run ALL the races, although we may try.

I am so grateful that RD was there to get me to start running. I"m not going to lie, I wanted that medal so badly. I saw the C2C medal when doing a Google search for a pin I was looking for and about fell out of my chair and started doing research. I had never run anything in my life. Lucky for me, they announced the first 10k that year and that was the beginning.

Now that I've done my first half and will be getting my C2C in Sept., I almost prefer running outside of the parks because the parks are just so congested in my slow corrals. But I will always want to do them. They are still a challenge for me. Do I wish they were less crowded? Do I wish they were cheaper? Of course! I also wish I could live with unicorns and rainbows! But I have started to limit my RD races and do some other ones locally.

These gators are right there with you, they are definitely very used to people, you'll see them many of them in the water next to the path but just as many in the grass right next to the path and the occasional one right on the path where you have to go around them.

In the meantime, for me and for one week every year, the good continues to outweigh the bad.

Fact. For me, it still does. Also, for all of the stories I've heard, I have yet to have a truly bad or stressful experience (unless you count registration!).

I'm brand new to runDisney so it's a bummer to read people are getting tired of it just as I'm discovering it. That said, I'm still psyched about doing the Dopey this year and I've got to believe they'll all sell out soon enough anyway.

Most of it is sold out now. That doesn't really matter. It's still fun. It's still "magical." Don't let anyone rain on your parade.

You're right. It is what you make it. I have had a couple of people who bothered me over the years, and the prices are crazy, but nothing that makes me want to stop. I have a blast every time, no matter what anyone says.

Happy birthday! :bday::cake:

Does anyone else find themselves looking at their schedule/life events based on races? I'm not terrible with it, but the other day I did make a comment to my mom along the lines of "I'm mad that [my cousin]'s wedding is the day of my half marathon." She laughed but I immediately knew it sounded crazy. Most normal people would probably plan around the wedding and not do the race that's the same day. But I really wanted to do it because I enjoyed the quarter marathon race of the same event so much last year and wanted to do the half this year and have it be my first. Even though I did know when I signed up months ago that they were the same day. So now, I'll be running a half marathon at 7 am on June 11, and going to my cousin's wedding at 2 pm/reception that evening. Needless to say, Sunday the 12th will be a definite day of laziness.

I let my family know what races I am considering with dates and ask for conflicts. If something comes up later, after I have registered, I generally opt for the race. For a wedding I would skip most races.

Only RunDisney races, I'm a photographer and got an inquiry for a wedding....it's DarkSide next year's date, so I had to say we were booked, they sounded cheap anyway so I don't think I was losing out on a booking, but Darkside takes priority and we actually have the runDisney calendar right with our work calendar notebook since those races & weddings get booked so far out!
