The Running Thread - 2016

Oh, great a Liverpool fan, someone I can now ignore. :)

United is still trying to recover from the damage caused by Moyes, they don't need Mourinho doing more damage.

I'm rooting for Leicester City as well at this point with United out of the running. I'm quite impressed with what they've managed to do.

They have had an impressive run, for sure. Still, I'm hoping for them and Tottenham to stumble so Arsenal can win it all. January and February were so frustrating to be a Gunner...

It is looking good for the at most light rain this weekend (20 to 30% chance). Wind is what is causing turmoil for members of my running club that will be doing Galveston this weekend.

I can handle wind fairly well. It's not fun, but since I don't have overly deep rims, I don't get blown around too much. Besides, with an out-and-back course, you get equal help and hurt over the 56 miles.

As for soccer, I am rooting for Leicester CIty to pull off the title this season. It is unreal what they are pulling off so far this season. My usually club to cheer for in Europe is Bayern Munich

I'm fully rooting for them too! I'd love to see them win it all if for no other reason than to show the rest of the EPL that you can do so without huge stars, ego-centric managers, and zillions of dollars. Not that Abramovich, who is now on his 10th manager in 11 years, is paying attention. ;)

We just got the Force Awakens Blu Ray yesterday and I'm looking forward to watching it again this weekend. I think this will be the 4th time?

I just watched it for the first time Monday and thought it was really good. Excited to see where they go.

ATTQOTD: not much in the way of hobbies but with baseball season starting that will take up a lot of time in the evenings. Also reading and binging TV shows.

As a family we bowled in leagues when my kids were at home. Now that they are out of the house (and the state :() DH and I bowl occasionally. He is good - I am mediocre! I also like to read. And of course Disney! DD26 and I go about twice a year (now they are run-cations) and DH and I rent a condo at Bonnet Creek for a week once a year and whoever can come just has to pay to get there, we pay for food and tickets, etc. Makes a great family trip! Also baseball! HUGE SF Giants fan! I watch every game and manage to get to a couple when they play the Rockies as DD26 lives in Colorado. We plan my trips to visit her around the Giants playing the Rockies. This year my first marathon is on Labor Day and the Giants will be there Mon, Tue, Wed that week. I think I will be walking very slowly around the ballpark! :)

I grew up in a family of A's fans, but we are happy to see the Giants do well too :)

ATTQOTD: Video games. :o SO and I are also hoping to get back into hiking this year and maybe dog agility.

Our old boy passed away last December at age 13, and he hadn't really been up for hiking or long distance walking in a long while. We just adopted a new older puppy about 6 weeks ago. She is just over 9 months old now. Little Miss Penny is a handful and a half... a little bit unexpectedly. :) She was so sweet and calm and docile when we got her, but now that she's getting over a mite infestation, giardia, and whipworm (she came from a shelter in the South and she was seized from her house before going to that shelter), it is like whoa, her energy level is through the roof. We did a doggy DNA test on her, and she's an Australian Cattle Dog mix... maybe not a breed we would have chosen on purpose, but she is what she is and we will do our best to meet her energy needs. :)

Related to running, I'm looking forward to maybe running with her, too. I know I'm supposed to wait until she's a year or so for her joints, so maybe I'll start trying this fall, rather than in the summer heat. I do Galloway intervals though (90/30), and when she starts running she wants to GO, so I'm not sure how it will work out. :)

I totally miss running with my pup. He is 12 years old and it's sad to think of the never ending energy he used to have. I hope your new girl ends up being a great running partner for you! :)

Ha, that wouldn't work for me since I'm vegetarian :) I've been trying to convince my husband we should get a dog so I'll add this to my list of arguments! We live in a suburb of DC so it's surprising we have so many deer but we also live near a big park and I guess that's where they're coming from.

@Barca33Runner Thanks for the tip! Maybe I should start convincing other people in the neighborhood to plant food and hope that they're attracted over there instead!

Wish I could be of more help. Turns out "have really good luck or really dumb rabbits" isn't much of an actionable tip.

Off Topic: I am getting the Disney itch, so I have started pricing out some scenarios. Is it worth getting the Quick Service meal plan? I could live without the dessert and ponder if its worth paying for a 3 year old who will likely eat very little... Planning this trip on a budget, so I just didn't know if it was worth that meal plan or would I come out better paying cash?

I don't think the Quick Service meal plan ever prices out. I would definitely pay out of pocket.

If you share meals at all, pay out of pocket.

With the recent price increases the DDP isn't worth it really at all. If you did the regular plan for example you'd have to do character meals for every meal to make it worth it.

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?

Football ( big Dallas Cowboys fan!) and running are more or less my hobbies. I'm also a big fan of Usain Bolt and cannot wait for the summer Oylmpics! I do carpentry stuff around the house and spend a good chuck of time doing stuff with my boys and wife( sports, school, travel, etc).

I'm overweight and a bit out of shape, but I'm sticking with my goal as long as it doesn't rain. If it does, I'll be happy just to finish. My bike handling skills are not good enough to really push hard when it's wet.

You're running a 1/2 Ironman this weekend and you say you are out of shape? I think anyone that could consider attempting one, and finishing one, has to be in pretty good shape. :teeth:

I don't think the dining plan is worth it. For it to be worth it you basically have to get the most expensive thing you can at every meal and hope you like what that item happens to be.

Registration for the BAA 10K was today and I got in so that one is official and I am pretty excited as it is my first race of the season and last year I helped someone "run" it and ended up walking the whole course. It will feel good to get out there and give it my best effort this year. Adding the cross training to my running will hopefully help.

I did P90X day 2 yesterday and 3 today in addition to my run today. I am sore from these P90X workouts. It's eye opening when you think you are in good shape and then you do some different exercises and feel how many muscles you don't normally use.

QOTD: I have 4 kids and a full-time job. So, when I am not taking care of the kids or chores around the house, or working I am running and doing Disney stuff with my extra time. I like to read about both subjects when I can stay awake long enough to do so. I do like to cook but my kids don't like trying new foods so I don't get to do much of it.

I'm a pin hoarder/collector- I've collected since 2000 and refuse to count how many I own (let's just go with 22 large cork boards, one large cabinet, 6 large trading bags full..)

I also love photography (well until my camera died an untimely death so waiting for the $$$ replacement)

Truth - The best way to keep your complete body fit is to mix in something that you haven't done in at least one month every week. You burn more calories and produce greater results in less time.

I try to mix things up enough to ensure that some part of my body is sore every day when training.

Agree with others the Quick Service plan is not worth paying for. You get stuck with desserts that you sound like you won't eat (or sometimes they aren't that great), yes you can exchange for a bottle of water instead but I think it's still not a 'deal' where you save overall. If you use one for breakfast you don't even get the dessert part, so it's a real loss of a credit there. I think it also limits what you get in a way and sounds like it would be a waste on the 3 year old. So yeah, I would pay out of pocket as it gives your more freedom too.
...and really no Force Awakens yet...you need to watch it, really!

QOTD: What other hobbies do you have other than running?
Hobbies? Ain't nobody got time for that! I used to read, knit, garden, shop, etc., until my son got school/sports age. By the time I get him to and from school and then to and from all of his activities, and then fix dinner and shove him into bed, I'm too tired! I run my business from home so there is the assumption I don't work and can just drop everything for a 30 second performance at school, or to help hubby with something, so a lot of time I am working after I get everyone else settled. Our school is 10 miles away from home so I drive a lot. In the summer, I refuse to get in my car and my main hobby is sitting on my raft in the pool.

Sleeping in isn't much of an option already. I have two pugs that make sure I don't do that, but thanks. We're excited though not sure we're completely ready for the change, but who is really?
You are never ready! Having kids does change your life. Some days it is for the better and some days you will realize that your mother cursed you for all the crap you pulled as a kid. Just wait until the older years when you have to deal with the emotional angst! My 9 year olds latest drama is that the girl he intends to marry (she told him in kindergarten that they are getting married) may have a new suitor.

We haven't done the quick service plan but we did buy the regular plan for my 5 year old. Even when he wasn't eating a meal, we used his plan for stocking up on snacks like boxes of cereal and fruit. He ate his body weight in the grapes they sell.

...and really no Force Awakens yet...you need to watch it, really!

I rented it last night and we started the movie at 9. Had no idea it was that long of a movie. It was great! I WANT MORE!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. DW thinks I am crazy even discussing a trip to Disney with our upcoming move which will add additional monthly cost. Her exact statement was "two trips to Disney in one year?" I was like, and the problem with that is... She also mentioned, well it would be a nice trip to take as a family of 3 for the last time. Looks like the summer could get interesting. So the next question is, any folks take a trip to WDW while pregnant (or spouse)? Technically she is not at the moment, but it looks like she has a want to become that way.

QOTD: Todays QOTD is a request. I think we may have touched on the subject matter before, however with new folks coming to the thread, I think some topics can/should be discussed more than once. How often people replace their running shoes? And how often they try out completely new ones or if they stay with same model and style always?

ATTQOTD: I change mine around 350 miles. I am big in terms of running at 6'-5" 210lbs, so I don't get as many miles out of the shoes as someone who weighs 170. I try out new shoes in the spring/summer if I am having problems with the ones I have been running in. This year I have been pleased with the pair I have been using, so I am just going to keep using them for now.

I'm just starting running longer distances, and as such more closely monitoring miles on shoes. I plan on retiring them around 350 as well. I'm a bigger guy too, 6'6" 280 and dropping now. I recently tried out new shoes. A new running store opened down the road from me and stopped by due to some problems I was having. Turns out all of my current shoes are a size too small and they all have less than 100 miles, ugh. I was able to relace them and get past the problems I was happening, but I will be switching brands and model when it comes time to get new shoes. I will probably visit the new store more often as they are only a mile from home.

I haven't really replaced any shoes yet. I have mixed in new ones though. So far I've only used Nike and new balance. I've never been properly fitted either so that's probably something I should do.
