The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What is your favorite training route and why?

I have a pretty nice loop that I run around my neighborhood. Each loop is a little more than a mile, has some decent hills, and traffic is relatively low so I can take my dog with me once or twice a week (he's good practice for rD races as he weaves back and forth in front of me for the first mile or so while varying his pace from sprint to dead stop). I can expand the loop to about 4 miles so I don't have to run as many loops on longer runs. Not the most scenic route, but it gets the job done.

Good morning folks! Hope everyone had a good weekend. I wasn't able to check in on the thread to much this weekend, but it appears we did not have much traffic and a little drama. Congrats to all that had a race this weekend!

QOTD: What is your favorite training route and why?

ATTQOTD: I enjoy running around the LSU lakes. Very little car traffic and always a lot of people on the route. Having a lot of options to increase mileage without repeating similar routes is nice as well.

Sunday was my Zydeco Half Marathon. I haven't had much time to train lately so I did not have high expectations for the race and figured anything below 2 hours would be a success. I started out and just ran at a somewhat comfortable pace, and decided to try to run as long as I could by feel. Things went well and I ended up with a finish time of 1:46:50 for an average pace of 8:09 officially. Overall I was 78th of 1127 runners. Things got interesting in the starting corrals when a lady fainted before the race. Medical personal came to attend to her and before the race started, she was sitting up and seemed like she would be ok.

ATTQOTD: We have some routes we run through a neighborhood that hooks on to a running trail that we use for our long runs. It's easy to vary up the routes with a mix of street running and trail running. The neighborhood is a great older neighborhood with some lakes in it that have geese, ducks and swans in them and some really beautiful and eclectic houses, so there's lots to look at and enjoy. Part of the trail runs along a nature preserve as well, so it's pretty common to see deer and some wild turkey on the run as well.

Great time on your race!

QOTD: What is your favorite training route and why?

We drive out to where I work and I run while DH rides his bike. It is very flat and there is a 1+ mile walking/running path I can include to add some miles when I need to. Otherwise it is an out and back, 1.25 miles down to the end of the road, turn left and run around the park and past the dam, .5 mile, then I can either circle the park, include the 1+ mile path or just run back to my car and start over, depending on how far I need to run that week. It's been fine for my half marathon training but I think it's going to get pretty boring when my mileage bumps up in my marathon training.

Things went well and I ended up with a finish time of 1:46:50 for an average pace of 8:09 officially

Awesome job! :)

QOTD: What is your favorite training route and why?

I don't have any really good trails or paths around me to run. A lot of where I have to run is on the side of the road, often where there is no or very little shoulder. The traffic is generally pretty light along those roads so it's not too bad. I can't say I enjoy running there, but you have to work with what you have.

QOTD: What is your favorite training route and why?
There is a running path near me that's along the water. I usually don't have time to go there (my policy run out my door and go from there) so on the weekends I sometimes drive out to do long runs along that path.

QOTD: What is your favorite training route and why?
Probably my neighborhood since I run that the most and I know it best. I'm sure I could run other places and it would be even better but I feel safest running in my neighborhood.

Congrats!! Your house-forced taper worked well.

QOTD: What is your favorite training route and why?

Like others, I have various trails not too far from my house, so on runs 6 miles or longer, I start off in our neighborhood and then make my way to the trails (some paved, some crushed limestone). Realistically, I can go anywhere from 6-13 miles without repeating any sections.

Every so often, if I'm going 9-11 miles, I will drive about 10-15 minutes to a 10-mile crushed limestone trail that goes around Argonne National Laboratory. It's a beautiful trail and has varied terrain.

Ran the Tobacco Road Half Marathon in Cary, NC this morning. This was my first race since Marathon Weekend which seems like it was ages ago, at this point!

The race itself is an out and back from the USA Baseball complex, running along a mix of pavement and the hard pack of the tree-lined American Tobacco Trail. Weather was a very enjoyable low to mid60s with 70% or so humidity. Cloud cover and a light breeze kept things from heating up too quickly as the race went on.

My original goal for this race was 2:15-2:30, as I'm still doing run/walk intervals to protect my hamstring and recondition my legs. Apparently that goal was a bit conservative as I hit the turnaround on pace for a 2:00 finish! Alas, I couldn't hold the pace through the back half, clocking in with a 2:02:18 net finish. Still, that's my second fastest half time, and I'm pretty happy with it given the circumstances.

I look forward to hearing how @IamTrike did with his marathon on the same course today.

It was a brutal marathon for me. I came in about an hour behind my goal time. By mile 4 I could tell it was not going to be a good race. I wound up needing to take 6 potty breaks and also found myself pretty dehydrated by about mile 16. I saw a lot of people that were really struggling including the 4:15 pacer who wound up dehydrated herself and needing help to finish. While my buddies were waiting for me to finish they saw at least 3 people pass out upon crossing the finish line.

It was frustrating to miss my goal by so far, particular since I had run 18 ahead of marathon goal pace on this course 2 weeks ago, but I think it was a good motivation for me. It showed that I can't afford to miss my training runs and I really need to watch what I eat.

ATTQOTD. I really like making non out and back long run routes that traverse Raleigh and the surrounding cities. It's always fun to run routes in which I run past somewhere that I don't like to drive to because it's "too far" away.

Wow makes me wonder what I missed last week while I was on vacation.

AATQOTD: I do a mix of neighborhood loops and running/horse trails that meander through my town. I can go in any direction from my house, so there are lots of combinations. Once I get past 8 miles there is a square shape of streets I run, adding a couple of back and forth streets to it, to get up to 15 miles. I like making my long runs as simple as possible, and avoid having to think about many turns I need to take.

The only vitamin I take is Vitamin D, mostly because it's supposed to be good for you, there are no real harmful side effects, and it's something I probably don't get enough of naturally over here in Iraq.

? D is made by the body when you are in sunlight. Isn't there lots of sunlight in Iraq? I should take D, living as I do in western WA. But you?

Or are you being silly?

After 72 hours of our house being on the market, we have a purchase agreement on our home and made an offer on the house we would like to buy. They have until 5PM tomorrow to respond. Fingers crossed for a good outcome!

Nice!

I used to go to Blackhawk hockey games back when they had no fans, but the fans there were super die-hard. Then the team got good and really popular and everyone (not me) made fun of the new fans who knew nothing and weren't as die-hard as them. These were people being snobby about being a level of fan (shakes head.)

Ugh. Sounds like Seattle fans. Dh starts it a little but I intervene lol. Who cares if someone comes later to fandom than another ?

As for how that connects to running, heck, my mom started us off jogging in the 70s when it became a thing. I can still remember being dragged out of bed to put on my yellow and blue running shoes to go be cold (relative...we lived in San Jose CA) and smell all the agricultural area early morning smells while running on the side of a two lane 45 mph road. Does being an early (forced, lol) adopter of jogging make me more awesome? Nopers.

Let's face it, 20,000 people do not sign up to do a yoga race and then talk about it and wear costumes and travel 3000 miles for it!

If they made such a thing I would sooooo be there.

And check out Wanderlust! :)

Food...I discovered that PB2 mixed with water works really we for me vs peanut butter (or PB2 mixed with oil) for pre-race food. Seems that for me the fat in the actual PB or mixing the powder with oil does something scary to my insides while I run. But the protein of the PB2 without the fat works.

My best *feeling* pre-race food situation was W&D 2014. We had a late breakfast at The Wave with eggs and cheese grits (they made them without bacon for me), etc. then had a small snack when we got up from our two hour rest before getting ready to head to the corrals. My stomach and energy felt better than any other time. Makes me want to go get eggs later at night before morning race events. But the only places for that at WDW are like Waffle House and I'm not sure I want to place my already sketchy race belly in the care of Waffle House. :)

Great job on the race! Though that sounds scary with the woman fainting before the race even started. I hope she was ok.

There are several nice, shaded, running trails near me that are paved. I definitely enjoy them. The only down side is that they're all hilly abut hey, it's good for training, right?

Oh, this does sound like a brutal race :( Sorry you had to deal with that but hopefully the next one is better!

Great job on the race, @LSUlakes.

ATTQOTD:My favorite training route is a 4 mile loop around a small reservoir, that has two decent hills, and lots of options for side routes I can use to lengthen it if needed. There is a 2.75 mile (one-way) rail trail that I can either park at and do at the start or end, or, if I park elsewhere, I can run it in the middle. I like this route for the options it gives me. I can add flats by veering off the loop in one direction, add hills by veering in another. In the winter it is a well cleared route (minus the rail trail) so snow and ice are less of a factor than if I run by my house. There is a decent shoulder in most spots, but cars do tend to go a bit fast.

ATTQOTD: My favorite route is a paved rail trail that is close to my house. I walk to and from the trail to warm up and cool down. The trail runs along the river and is very scenic in all seasons. I like that I don't have to deal with car traffic, just bikers and runners/walkers. I can go for miles in either direction, so it's great for long runs, and it goes through 3 parks so I have options for bathrooms and water.

Sorry the run didn't go as well as planned. I agree with your thought process that since you were able to do it 2 weeks ago you likely can do it sometime again in the future.

Not being silly at all. Articles such as this one talk about the benefits of vitamin D in amounts beyond what you get from being outdoors. Plus, I don't get much sun over here. My apartment is on the second floor of the hotel, my office is on the first, and aside from when I'm running around the parking lot or sitting on my patio, I don't get outside. I'd love to go run in the park across the street or shop at the local markets, but security concerns dictate otherwise.

Also, doesn't sunblock result in an obstacle? I think the vitamin D is a result of unprotected exposure to sunlight and many of us don't have a lot of exposure without sunblock.

ATTQOTD: I like this fitness path that runs along the major road on the island I live on, It has a really nice start in the woods and I get A hill, with a great view to distract me, when I cross the bridge towards the end (gotta love florida) but it does cross a major road in the middle and that can be scary at times.
