The Running Thread - 2016

Ill add them to the list soon. Just wanted to point out I will be at the Navy 10 miler and how are the crawfish in your part of the world?

I saw that! Have you ran it before? This will be my first time. My son is Navy reserve and we were gonna do it together but now he will be in Ireland on a missions trip so I'm doing it alone. And I will be eating tacos! Not a crawfish fan lol! Although around here people love them! :)

Welp, I'm shut down for at least three weeks until another x-ray.

I finished the Cowtown Challenge this weekend (5k on Saturday, Half on Sunday), but around mile six the pain I've been having in the top of my right foot was almost unbearable. By mile nine and the massive hill back in to downtown, it was starting to affect my entire gait and I was hurting EVERYWHERE - like pain I'd never experienced before. So, I took it even slower than I was hoping to ... I did finish, because I'm not a quitter and I was that far in, so I might as well finish. But I HURT. Like HURT.

But a visit with my doctor this morning kinda confirmed what I had a suspicion about going into this weekend - I've got a small stress fracture in my right midfoot, and I still have some serious "tendon distress" between my big toe and second toe on that foot. They likely go hand-in-hand.

So, I've cancelled my registration to NYC Half next month, which sucks because I'm out that registration fee - but at least I get a guaranteed entry into 2017, so all is not lost. But I've pretty much cleared my race calendar between now and Tinkerbell. I'm off my feet for three weeks, and then I can resume non/low-impact activity (swimming, biking), and then hopefully by April 1 I'll be able to get back to casual/easy runs to try to build my base back up before Pixie Dust in May.

I think my plan is to take it pretty easy from here until the end of the year - the only races I've got serious $$ committed to are Disney races (Pixie Dust, Dumbo Double Dare), and I would like to still get to Memphis for St. Jude in December. But I guess I'll just rest, heal and then focus on marathon training for 2017, whatever race combination I decide to do over Marathon Weekend.

Sorry to hear that @Keels ! All I can say is hang in there and follow the rehab plan. Don't push it too quickly and end up with longer term issues.

ATTQOTD: I go by feel with shoes, and ask myself, "If these were tires, would I put them on my car?" Tires are just a good analogy. A compact car who drives tons of highway miles at high speeds might wear out tires faster than a semi moving around town. It just depends, like some of you said. It depends on the starting aligment, too. I need structure due to over pronation, so good shoes are more critical to my alignment than they are to others. Knee "pain" tends to tell me my shoes are going out. Two pairs a year for me does it.

I've got two races to add:
Kings Mountain Half, April 23
Carowinds Run and Ride Half, Sept 11

@DopeyBadger is helping me work through some Hanson's style options for training after a couple of years of using Galloway. It's a fun change!

Hi @dmross. Those look like fun races, have you done them before? We are thinking of doing the Kings Dominion events in May.

Sorry @Keels that you have to stop running for now.
Smart plan to take it easy and maybe get some R & R.
Hopefully you will bounce back soon and be stronger than ever.

Finally registered for the two races I am planning on running later this year.

May
15 - Barca33Runner - Cleveland Rite Aid Half Marathon (sub-2:00:00)

November
5 - Barca33Runner - Indianapolis Monumental Half Marathon (1:50:00)

Now I just have to keep working to achieve those goals.

Really sorry to hear about your injury. Hope you have a speedy recovery!

I ran it two years ago. It's a well put together race. Starts early which is good because it can be warm. You start off by running through a golf course then onto some gentle rolling hills with the navy's horses. Later on you run on base where kids spray you with water. The finishers medals are awesome. Looking forward to it this year. Hopefully I can get our house sold and moved into a new one soon so I can get back to regular training.

Since the search for a new house has been killing my running time, thought Id update. Went into the weekend with 3 houses we wanted to look at and possibly make offers on this week, once we put ours for sale officially. 2 of the 3 are now off the market. The process has been very frustrating thus far and has only just begun.
Totally understand. When we bought the home that we are in today we went through a very long process and put in several bids before we landed where we are. My wife even made the mistake in becoming emotionally invested in a particular home early one - one that we ended up not buying for a few great reasons - but it was exhausting because of her let-down.

Lots of work, but well worth it. Good luck!

@Keels - Sorry to hear about the stress fracture. At least you went to the doctor immediately. I ran through the pain of my stress fracture for a few weeks before caving in and lost 3.5 months instead of 6-8 weeks.

Good luck in your recovery, and listen to your doctor.

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

ATTQOTD: LSUlakes = One of the popular places to run around Baton Rouge is around a series of lakes near LSU's campus. I often find myself there on the weekends getting in my long runs. Its also a place that nearly every long distance race has part of the route near. From the lakes I can run into the heart of campus, along side Mike the Tiger, Tiger Stadium and then down to the Mississippi river. I am also a big LSU fan, so the name just works for me.

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

Barca-For FC Barcelona, my favorite football team. The "c" pronounced like an "s"; or with a lisp to sound a bit like "th" if you want to get super technical or are actually from the region.
33-Favorite number
Runner-Just a random assortment of 4 letters and 6 characters. Not really sure where it came from or how I thought of it.

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

ATQOTD - Dis5150 has been my username on pretty much everything since 1995 when I became a dispatcher for the California Highway Patrol.
Dis - for Dispatcher
5150 - in CHP code means "mental case"
So basically it means crazy dispatcher! But since I quit working for the state of CA in 2008 when we moved out of state, and then I discovered my passion for Disney, it's meaning has changed to crazy for Disney! :)
