The Running Thread - 2016

My running club claims Meb as a member! Our club president met him before Chevron a couple of years ago and gave him a club shirt. He sent back the following pic:

Way cool! I'd have nothing to say to him, because he's in a league of his own, but I've heard of nothing but positive interactions with Meb.

If I run up and down all the rows and back, I can squeeze out a mile. Better than 2-3 hours on a treadmill.
I tend to agree. I've stayed in airport hotels with access to nothing but a parking lot, so I've run dozens of laps rather than dreadmill it.

This week we have the following folks running a race or races! @Keels @Disneyland_emily @Anisum @DVCFan1994 @Miranda and @SunDial . How is race weekend looking for yall? Training has gone well? Any adjustments you would like me to make to your goal time for the weekend? Good luck to each of you and safe travels as you head out. I look forward to reading about yalls experience.

My thoughts exactly!

Got them on the list. Good luck!

Hope you recovery goes well.

Just finished packing, fly out at 8:15 tomorrow. Ready for my third go at the Glass Slipper challenge, plus my the 5k with my 7 year old daughter and my mom. No time goals for me this weekend. I am focusing on having fun, getting pictures, and just enjoying the experience.

It will be my last GSC for a while. I have promised DH next February break we can do a ski trip. I will always have a soft spot for this weekend though, because it got me into running. I never was a runner before, even as kid due to bad asthma. I lost a decent amount of weight in my mid thirties, but I was nore of a gym rat type doing spin and boot camp classes. Then my little sister asked me to do PHM with her in 2014. I agreed and then they announced the GSC. So I signed up for that, and then she got pregnant. Her pregnancy was high risk, so she couldn't even walk it. She deferred but since we had the vacation all planned I did it anyway and she cheered me on with our families and parents. Because of her deferral I agreed to do it with her in 2015. We were both injured at race time last year, so we said this year we'd take one more go at it. We are planning to "race" the 10k and just have fun at the half. I know I won't beat my 10k PR from the fall, so I don't have a time goal, but we will just run, not stop for lots of pictures, we may be corral A as well for the 10k (D for the half) which would keep the crowd more manageable.

Usually on weeknights (except the summer months when it is light outside later) I am running on a treadmill at Planet Fitness at 8:30pm and that is about a 1 mile drive from my house. But on too busy of Chicago street to run/walk there.
On weekends and on weeknights of the lighter months (aka heaven) I just run out my back door and around my neighborhood

Roxymama, I'm in Chicago too! Lucky to live a few blocks from the lakefront and one of the tracks in the park.

I try to get out on the path as much as I can, but I am a baby about temps. We drive to the gym right now for treadmill fun.

QOTD: For your runs, do you tend to run out the door or do you drive somewhere? When you do drive, what motivates you to do that? Is it terrain?... a change??? meet people??... So what's your story?
I've been too busy packing for Princess the last few days to reply. I usually run around my town because it's small and good for 3-6 (maybe 7) miles. Any more than that and I have to drive before I backtrack too much and need a change of scenery. I live near a park that has a 3.75mi or so running trail and so when I drive I usually just go there. I just run around that a few times because there's usually people to watch so it's a good distraction.

Thanks so much! The weekend is looking good. My training went well up until the past week or so when it got too cold and snowy to keep up my schedule but since I'm not pacing the group I run with it shouldn't be a problem.

Todays QOTD is brought to you by one of our fellow posters. Thanks for the idea and great question. Also, to anyone else that has a QOTD they would like to ask, just send me a PM and I will use it in the near future.

QOTD: Do you prefer to run alone so you can set your own pace or with others? If running with others do they have to be of the same pace or do you mind slowing down for them? If your pace varies to much for the person running with you, how to you go about letting that person know?
ATTQOTD: I enjoy a little of both. Sometimes it find it easier to get a good hard workout done alone and at other times I like the challenge of competing with my fellow runner. The same can be said for long runs. Sometimes it helps to run with a group of slower runners when I am not motivated to run the whole distance alone. Having friends with me helps me get in all the miles. While at other times I have a pace I must follow and hanging out with friends isn't going to help me reach my goal that day. For the second part of the question, if it is someone new to running I will try to support them and use that day as a recovery day for me when my pace is slower anyway and wont really hurt anything by doing so. I think the best thing to do for someone who isn't at the same level of fitness as you are is to try introducing them to a group within the larger group that runs a similar pace. The other option is to encourage your friend to continue improving and when he/she can ran "x" pace they are more than welcome to come join you. It isn't always easy, but at some point they will understand even though initially they may not take it well.

I almost exclusively run on my own, but not always by choice. I'm open to running with others and will sometimes ask people if they want to run, but they usually tell me they "don't want to slow me down". For the rare times that someone will run with me I usually let them set the pace. I do run with my wife a lot when the weather is nicer...we will usually hit the trails and pace is the furthest thing from my mind out there.

For my long runs, we have a group of over 100 runners, so I run with a pace group. I will mix it up at times and run with a slower group...it all depends on my mood and how I'm feeling that day. During the week, I typically run by myself...especially when doing speedwork or hill repeats. I do run with a small group 1 day a week, but sometimes I skip that run to be by myself. It really helps clear my head if I've had a rough day/week/month at work.

I always run by myself. I just like getting out there on my own and listening to my music. It is my personal down time that I use for destressing and clearing my mind.

I almost always run alone. Mainly because I don't really live near anyone who I would run with. When I visit my sister we run together since we run pretty much the same pace for anything under 2 hours.

I Lone Wolf it, although this past weekend there was a Valentine's Day 5K going on along my route which was interesting. There was quite a bit of congestion so I altered my route.

ATTQOTD: Didn't think I'd have time to respond today, but I'm stuck at Logan with a three hour delay:(.

I run alone almost exclusively. I do the GSC with my sister, but we don't live close enough to run together frequently. If we are both at our parents in the summer we'll occasionally run together. At home, I have really fast friends. All sub 1:45 halves. Solid 2 minutes/mile faster than me. I don't feel comfortable knowing I'm slowing them down that much. They're all lifelong runners, I just started in 2013. I'd like to join a running club, but my kids schedule makes it tough. Maybe in a few years.

QOTD: I run alone all the time. I run intervals so I feel like it would be really hard for me to run with other people, plus I only have one friend who is a runner, and she is quite a bit faster than me, plus we are only very casual friends. I used to see her a few times a year before she had kids and stuff, but now I think the only time I have seen her in the past 2-3 years is the one time I ran into her at a race last year. :)

Other than on race days I prefer to run alone, but not for pacing reasons. I prefer to run alone because I don't get the same psychological down time when running with others.

My lone exception is when I run with my wife. I am just as relaxed running with her as running alone. When I run with her, I run at her pace as she is not yet capable of running at my pace. When my wife is running, I essentially run twice/day. Once to get in my workout, and another with her at her pace to help her through hers. I just have to be careful not to overwork my legs when her mileage increases.

Just getting caught up since I wasn't able to be here on the weekend. As far as the last question of the day, I usually drive somewhere to run. We have a lot of great paved trails in the area and they're a lot prettier than running in my neighborhood. And sometimes I drive to the track at a nearby high school. Every once in a while, I run in my neighborhood if I'm pressed for time. Today's question, I like to do long runs with friends. I'm lucky to have a friend that runs just a bit faster than I do. I have another friend that runs slightly slower and run with her sometimes as well. The three of us pretty much start together, spread apart at some point, and then meet up again at the end.

And good luck to everyone who has races this week!

ATTQOTD:
I am a lone wolf as well. But mostly because I spend so much time of the day worrying about accommodating other people (which I do not mind; I'm a born "helper" and enjoy it) that I kind of like getting to run wherever I want and at whatever pace I want and listen to my music and podcasts, etc. Some "me time."
However I do enjoy running with pace groups at races when available now and again, but I also like the freedom of running ahead or falling back as I want since that's not really a group I am tied to.

Sappy alert:
The exception is every now and again I get to run with my husband. It is rare, but we mostly go slower than normal and talk the whole time...so not the typical training day. I like it because I like him. #gag #sorry

Aww... that's cute :) I talked my husband into running a 5k at Disney plus a local holiday 5k and I really enjoyed doing those together but he was not bit by the running bug. So I think that's probably all the running together for us.

I don't think my husband likes running as much as me (actually I know he doesn't), but he is tackling it as a challenge to do a race per month like I did last year. He LOVES to swim and LOVES to bike and the running part just helps him maintain the fitness for that leg of the triathlon. He swims all the time at an indoor pool and he has a fancy bike in our basement set up with a fancy gizmo so he can ride it like a stationary bike during the winter. Running is low on his totem pole but I appreciate that he is supporting my run craziness and joining in with me :)
