The Running Thread - 2016

Just found this thread after being away for the last week. Will try to post my upcoming races when I get them figured out.

Answers to a couple of the questions:

-Medals are displayed on a 48.6 metal hook display. Looking for a new one to display all non-Dopey medals because that one is getting crowded.
-I'm a Diet Mountain Dew junkie. Yes, I am deeply ashamed of this fact and still completely unable to change it.
-I do long runs based on EPL and La Liga schedules on Saturdays and Sundays. Try to find a game (~2 hour long runs) or two-game window (anything more than 2 hours) with matches of interest and hit the treadmill. I can't shake the bad habit of being mainly a treadmill runner for long runs but hope to make changes and do more runs outside in the coming year.

QOTD>Typically my long runs are on Saturday mornings, but I have altered that to Fridays or Sundays if the weather is more agreeable.

I like your approach here, but mine goes the opposite way. I have to make sure a game isn't on, especially a Manchester United game, because there's no way I can run on a treadmill, so I have to get my runs in between games.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! My long runs are on Saturday but their timing is always adjusted so I don't miss an Arsenal match!

I'm a coffe drinker in the mornings.

Long runs are usually on Saturday. Ocasional we run on Subday instead if Saturday has a conflict but that's not the norm. Our Galloway running group runs on Saturdays during training season.

QOTD: Do you normally run your long run on Saturday, Sunday, or some other day of the week? What's the reason for your choice?

Long runs for me are normally on Saturday mornings. The longer the run the early I start. This week I had to move it to Friday because of a family trip. Although I really enjoy watching the sun rise during a run. The main reason for the early start is to be home for Saturday breakfast with the family.

1/22/16 QOTD: Do you display running items in your house or office? If so, give us a description of your set up.

Yes/no to the house, no to the office. I said yes/no in the house because I do have my finishers/placement medals displayed my "mud room" but very few people walk through that area of the house.

QOTD: Do you normally run your long run on Saturday, Sunday, or some other day of the week? What's the reason for your choice?

Saturdays for two reasons; 1) like most people, in case life happens, I have Sunday as a back-up and 2) Sunday is a recoup day in case needed.

QOTD: What is the coldest weather you've run in? Do you run inside with a treadmill? Do you run later in the day?

ATTQOTD: The coldest temps I have even run in is 25. Rarely gets into the 20's around here and the morning it was 25 was the morning of a Turkey Trot 5k about 3 years ago. I run on a treadmill, but not because of it being to cold, but more so because when I get off work it's 5:30PM and by the time I get home its already dark. I am not a big fan of running 8 or miles all at night in my neighborhood because people aren't looking for runners. I will run in the afternoons during summer when its a bit cooler outside.

Didn't put in the miles I wanted over the weekend. On 1/23 I got 3 stroller miles in @ a 8:02 pace and 8 miles @ 8:08 pace on 1/25. Planning on 5-6 miles this afternoon because I didn't hear my alarm go off this morning. Today is also the start of my diet and training towards my spring marathon.

QOTD: What is the coldest weather you've run in? Do you run inside with a treadmill? Do you run later in the day?

1) Coldest run was -10F with a windchill of -15 F.
2) It's been years since I've run on a treadmill (back when I used to do a lot of traveling). Never been able to get comfortable on a treadmill.
3) The timing of my runs is dictated by what other things are going on. I usually try and get a plan for the day from my wife the night before, check the weather, and then decide when I should run. Mostly weekdays at night and weekends in the morning. I've run as early as 3am and as late as 11pm outside.

Good Luck with the start of a new training cycle!

QOTD: What is the coldest weather you've run in? Do you run inside with a treadmill? Do you run later in the day?

ATTQOTD: I'm not sure of an exact temperature, but low 20s. Below 20 or ice and snow on the ground and it's a no-go. I avoid the treadmill unless I have no choice. We've had to do some long runs on the treadmill when we had a race coming up and just had to get the miles in and we had extended weeks of bad weather. It's funny because when I first started running it was all on the treadmill and I'd watch TV. I thought running outside was just miserable. But, once I started doing longer miles and started running outside I grew to hate the treadmill (as is the case for most people).

We pretty much never run later in the day. I'm just a morning runner. Anytime I've tried to run later in the day I just have a terrible run, so I don't do it unless I have no choice.

QOTD: What is the coldest weather you've run in? Do you run inside with a treadmill? Do you run later in the day?

The coldest I've run in is -4 with a windchill if -22. That was a tough run mostly because I put my armpocket on too tight and lost a little blood flow to my hand. I'm pretty sure I got minor frostbite because of that. I don't run on treadmills unless I absolutely have no other choice. I despise running in place like that. I usually try to run first think in the morning, but that doesn't always work out so I have later in the day as a back up.

QOTD: What is the coldest weather you've run in? Do you run inside with a treadmill? Do you run later in the day?
Probably about 24F with a wind chill making it 18 maybe? I avoid treadmills at all cost. I run later in the day on week days because running and showering gets me into work later than I'd like. The only exception to this rule is during the summer when it remains hot even after I get home.

QOTD: What is the coldest weather you've run in? Do you run inside with a treadmill? Do you run later in the day?

I'm a cold weenie so the coldest for me is like 16 degrees. I also have recently been told by my doctor to not run outside in the cold as I have exercise induced asthma and the cold really irritates that. But I honestly prefer treadmill running. I am more likely to feel relax and almost meditative when I'm running on a treadmill than when I'm outside because outside I feel like I constantly have to be paying attention to my surroundings and also making sure that I don't get lost in the neighborhood.

During the week I run after work because I'm not a morning person. My long runs are currently on Mondays but I'm looking to change those up to the weekends because it just doesn't work well to be running until 7p on Mondays. Plus during the weekends I can get up early enough to get a long run in and not disrupt my day too much.

QOTD: What is the coldest weather you've run in? Do you run inside with a treadmill? Do you run later in the day?

The coldest weather I've run in came when I lived in far eastern Russia. The temperature was around 0* F, but I couldn't tell you exactly what it was. Once you get to that point, it's all just cold. Now, I run on a treadmill much of the time because we're not allowed to run outside when it's dark out, and I can't wait until 7am to go running. As the days get longer, I'm looking forward to more morning laps around the parking lot.

QOTD: What is the coldest weather you've run in? Do you run inside with a treadmill? Do you run later in the day?

I've ran a 28 degree day with some pretty crazy wind and a 27 degree day that felt warmer due to lack of wind. The cold wind makes all the difference in me deciding now if treadmill is a better idea. If it is cold on a weekend I will wait until later in the day than usual just to hold out for the highest temp possible.
But 90% of the time I am at the gym on a treadmill during the winter.
Weeknights I run at the gym starting at 8:30 or 9pm once the kiddo is asleep. (I miss my 7pm runs outside in the spring/summer when I chased the sunset back home...sigh...)

Also if there is a piece of ice...I will find it...so I only run outside if the ground is looking really dry and clear.

QOTD: What is the coldest weather you've run in? Do you run inside with a treadmill? Do you run later in the day?

Coldest was probably 8 degrees? ish. Which is fine for a short run as long as I have my face covered. But this weekend it was 24 degrees and I thought I would be fine for my long run (every weekend we get with dry sidewalks is a gift I don't feel I can waste) but the wind was 15-20 mph the whole time. After I finished the 14 miles I didn't think I would ever feel warm again. I was standing under the hot water in the shower still feeling cold! Wind sucks- I can't seem to generate any heat. I don't have a treadmill. I could join a gym to get a treadmill, but I feel like I would be kicked off it before I finished my long run. How does one do a long run in a gym without really angering the other people by hogging the machine for over an hour?

Probably around 30 degrees. I don't like to run in much colder than that so then I'll run inside. I do usually run after school.

I joined a mega cardio gym, Planet Fitness. It has no trainers or classes and isn't fancy at all, but it does have probably at least 35-40 treadmills, and maybe 20 ellipticals and probably 20 bikes. Since I only go for the treadmill, I have found even on the busiest days that I can get one no problem. And it seems that the majority of people using them are on for less than 20 minutes (at least when I go.) I think a lot of people run or walk for a very short amount of time before lifting weights of doing one of their set out "circuit" machine areas. Is it weird that I try to "outlast" as many people as possible? That's weird right?
If that big place wasn't so close to my house I'd probably have to bite the bullet and buy a treadmill.

The saddest part is I live walking distance to a giant state of the art college gym with an indoor heated track and I can't use it because I'm not a student or alumni. Don't think I haven't thought about taking one business class just to use the gym. I guess at that point may as well buy a treadmill.

This looks like fun!

Upcoming races for me:

USAF half marathon Sept 19th-20th weekend goal time of 3:10 if possible.
Few questions for you on this... Are you running the 5k and the Half? Can you verify the dates? TIA!

Depending on the gym, some TM will shut off after 1 hour of running. At this point the rule is you are required to get off if someone is waiting to use it. That's at least what a friend of mine from the northeast told me. The TM I use is at my office and I don't think anyone here wants to run for more than a hour, other than me. The gym isn't that busy when I am here to use it. It hasn't shut down on me going over an hour.
