The Running Thread - 2016

Love reading about everyone's races! Great runnin' all! I didn't run it but the local Omaha marathon was yesterday and had to be delayed by 1 hr due to a shooting beforehand near part of the course and the the course got changed a little I guess. I was thinking how that would have sucked waiting. The numbers for this race weekend dwindle each year due to an outside company taking it over a few years ago, so if you want a Nebraska race maybe not this one.

@dis_or_dat - ummm you are a pretty fast runner with that time, if I were you I wouldn't feel silly lining up at the front at all :)

@Keels you could pair up with a local animal group since you love dogs and encourage to walk/run with your dog. just a random idea.

In that case, you need to charge a race fee two or three time higher than any 5k in the area, have very narrow portions of the course to force the complaints over walkers walking and runners running to the surface, and start the race early enough so everyone has to set an alarm beginning with a 2. :rotfl:

Ooh! Don't forget to put your craft skills to use to create a very limited amount of commemorative merchandise for the event! You could even go ahead and list it on eBay ahead of time so the runners don't get a chance to buy it!

:jumping1:

Congrats to everyone for their weekend runs!

Looks like I'm going to stick with the plan to do a half in October, so that Light-Side in January won't be my first half. I've switched over to Higdon's Intermediate 2 plan, picking up at week 9(-ish) and had a 10 mile run on Saturday morning. I was able to squeeze it in between a couple of thunderstorms, just having to dodge the puddles along the way. Since it took a couple of hours, I used two GU's and that probably explains why I ran out of water around mile 8. I think I'll need to learn to ration a little bit better. My feet were a little sore after finishing, but otherwise, no real problems. I've been trying to use a foot roller to see if that can clear up that soreness before my next run.

I'm feeling pretty good about the decision to get this extra experience.

First, thanks for all the well wishes on my run this weekend. I finished 18 seconds above my goal time at 1:00:17 but the course/weather was far more brutal than I anticipated (90% humidity, more trails than expected based on course map, having to be careful on steep inclines to avoid injury before my half in 2 weeks, etc.) so I'm satisfied with my results. My running shoes are covered in dirt so it's good it didn't rain.

Second, welcome @aussie_princess @tacboze! You'll have a wonderful time here.

I think the key is to make sure you're all on the same page ahead of time and figure out what people's goals are and whether it's okay to split up, and that it's not personal at all. We didn't do that before Wine & Dine and it was a mistake. Now we know better.
Good advice. I think that's where things are headed and I will probably broach the subject next rD run.

My phone game is depressing; if I tried this I'm pretty sure I would fall and break my face.
My biggest problem is I want to get back to running so I usually forget to hit send and then wonder why people didn't get my text.

I normally run the Disney races with my running spouse. She & I have the same pace, train together when we can, and love running & talking with each other. The only time we didn't run the whole thing together was the full during Dopey two years ago. She had GI issues and sent me on my way because she knew this was my only shot at a Comrades qualifier.
Your running spouse sounds great. Does she have any slow brothers?

Not to step all over @Ariel484's question - but I've done four RD race weekends with friends in the past year, and while it's a sensitive subject, we've always talked about what the plan is beforehand. The only race that we've all run together was the Marathon during Dopey this year - and it was mostly because I need my two BFFs to get me through to the finish line of that race.

Everything else, we'll usually start together if we're in the same corral, but we'll take off at our own pace to run our own race. I've got one BFF that LOVES to stop for all the pictures, while another just wants to pass people and get the race done with. Meanwhile, I'm slower than both of them and I like a combination of the two experiences.
Good to know. It sounds similar to our group (though the one that takes pictures just runs and gets selfies and catches up to us) so it's good to know it can be done.

So! I'm putting my newfound race director knowledge and skills to work for ... my birthday!

I've decided to organize and host a 5K complete with a baller "post-party".

My permits with the city officially passed today, so now I can plan the fun things!

It's going to be a fun run, something my friends can bring their kiddos to and enjoy. Out-and-back 5K that ends with a DJ, taco truck, mimosa station, big inflatable slide and bounce house.

And of course COOL BLING.

What else should should I add? Any fun things you've seen at a local fun run?
On course entertainment. We have some volunteers from a local kids group that play guitar and sing on course at some local races!

Ooh! Don't forget to put your craft skills to use to create a very limited amount of commemorative merchandise for the event! You could even go ahead and list it on eBay ahead of time so the runners don't get a chance to buy it!

:jumping1:
That killed me. We also can't forget that you need to refuse deferrals and make sure lines for any entertainment are REALLLLLLY long.

Your running spouse sounds great. Does she have any slow brothers?

No runner brothers, unfortunately. She does have a dad who loves to be involved in race weekend, though. In addition to driving us to the start, he's gone so far as to wait for us at the intersection of Bear Island and Western Way to give us our sunglasses so we don't have to carry them in the dark for the first part of the full.

Hi guys! So I don't have a training journal, so this might a be a long post since I love reading other people's race recaps. :)

The weather was beautiful and clear and I even saw a dolphin in the water. Didn't realize how fast my first mile was, but I think I settled in OK although a bit too fast. I did get lost twice. Backtracking to a volunteer thinking he was telling me to run a different way, but he was saying "water!" and another time I followed another runner the wrong way into a dead end. But I don't think it affected my pace much. However, around mile 9 I could feel a blister large forming and my pace slipped around mile 11. I even thought about quitting and walking. I knew DH would be around mile 12 and thought about collapsing into his arms wailing about missing my PR. But I also thought about this group and how some people have really been helping me (especially @DopeyBadger) and how much time I've been training and so I kept going. My foot started cramping (compensating for my blister) around mile 11.5 right as I saw my DH filming me! I gritted my teeth and kept pushing myself to MOVE (hoping to see the finish line around every corner :P ). I could see the clock at the finish line and saw I could make my PR if I booked it and I did! :)

I did want to collapse afterwards (all the while my DH is surreptitiously filming me, why?!) luckily they had good swag with giant cans of coconut juice etc and even FREE massages! But the line was too long so we went home and I jumped into the hot tub. Ahhhh. :) It was really cool talking to some super friendly runners afterwards and I think it showed my DH the running community camaraderie. Also, it was the first time he'd ever seen me race, so that support was really awesome. Besides DH, course support was a bit sparse - nothing like runDisney! :earboy2:

Spinner!

Congrats @CherieFran, @jhorstma, @Slogger, @michigandergirl and @Mickey's sweetheart !

That Dulles Day 10k looks so cool! Excited for this week off, not stuffing my face full of carbs (it's fun the first day, not so fun later), foam rolling, drinking some alcohol, and looking towards the future :darth:

Thanks @dis_or_dat ..........and congrats on staying mentally tough and getting that PR. You rock!

@Keels ......your race sounds amazing but I would expect nothing less. Taco truck sounds great....maybe make it a taco run, you have to down tacos at each mile, don't forget the beer if you can get the permits. How about giving out big sombreros as part of the race swag and everyone can run in them?!!! Where do I sign up to be a balloon lady?

Finally got myself to wake up early for a run this morning. Alarm went off at 4:15AM and was out running by 4:45 ish. I'll need to get up a little earlier for tomorrows run because its longer, but its a start for the time being.

Mostly the inside of my right knee. It hurts when I start my run but by the end, the pain subsides some. It's sore the rest of the day. I took a bath and aleve and it helped. I'm thinking just inflammation from new exercise. I think I'll incorporate some stretching, I bet that will help.
The inside of my left knee hurts some, too, just not as bad...that pain goes down to the inside of my ankle, but the pain is worse at the ankle.

After reading this, the first thing that came to mind was shoes! Are you running in actual running shoes? Are they old or used for others things on a day to day basis? If so, I would go to a running store near you and get fitted for shoes that fit you best and use those shoes for running/walking only. Hopefully that is the problem and not something else. You will be surprised how many issues a good pair of shoes can solve. Good luck!

So I thought I'd just say hi to everyone here.

I'm a complete RunDisney newbie, but it's been a goal of mine for a while now. About 2 months ago a friend mentioned she was signing up for the Princess 5k in Feb 2017 and in a moment of optimistic spontaneity, I decided to jump in too! I've done two 5ks in the past but I walked them both and they were more of a 'fun run' type thing. I've wanted to be a runner for years and I decided this was the perfect opportunity. The first weekend after I registered for the race, I sat down and developed my own running plan - and I've been training at least 3 times a week since then.

I am definitely a lot bigger than I should be, and that makes running all the more of a challenge, but having the 5k as a goal (and the opportunity to plan a trip to WDW) is the most amazing motivator. I'm absolutely falling in love with running and since I started training, I've lost 7.3kg/16lbs which is one very nice benefit of running lol! 5k is still a challenge for me but it doesn't stop me dreaming of one day running a 10k, half marathon and maybe even full marathon! I love that Disney has so many different runs, because there will always be a new one for me to work towards.

Anyway, that's me - I'll be lurking around for a bit, asking questions etc. Looking forward to sharing in the support!

Welcome to the thread and thanks for introducing yourself! Congrats on weight lost and pursuing your goals!

Finished my half marathon today in 1:50:07!! Almost a 3-minute PR on a day that was way too warm and humid for mid-September. When I wanted to slow down, I kept thinking about wanting to be able to report back here with a good race. So thanks, everybody, for helping with my mental toughness! :teeth:

I'll recap in more detail in my training journal.

Congrats on the PR!

59:02 for the Dulles Days 10K!!! PR baby!!! And let me tell you, for any plane lovers out there, this is worth a trip next September. You pass through the Air & Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy annex (Space Shuttle, SR-71 Blackbird, Enola Gay, etc.), race past a United 777 that they tow out for the race (with free pics!), run up and down the 2 mile runway past planes taxiing by the terminals, and then return after the race for the Plane Pull festival out on the tarmac! Just a really cool all-things-aviation experience.

Congrats on the PR!

Ran a 20 miler today - my first run with e-Gel. I was out of town (in Chicago) all week, but I managed to get in all of my runs, so I felt ready for the run. I got a good night's sleep (Alabama won!) and woke up to 70+ degree weather and 100% humidity. :scared:

The e-Gel worked as advertised for the first 16 miles or so of the run. They have a lot more volume than any other running fuel that I have used, so that will take some getting used to. Ran with water instead of Gatorade in my Camelbak. But the heat and humidity eventually caught up with me. The e-Gel makes me more thirsty than any other fuel that I have used, then add in the weather conditions and I ran out of water too soon. The last 3 miles of the run were really bad, but I made it. Kept my heart rate low (averaged 138 BPM) but lost 6 pounds of water weight on the run even though I drank 65 oz of water - not good. That also explains why I was so light headed at the end.

I am going to use the e-Gels a few more times before making a final decision about them. Again, the size/volume was a slight problem for me, as was how thirsty they made me (drank a lot more water that I am used to drinking in similar conditions which caused me to run out of water too early in my run).

At any rate, I start my official Dopey training tomorrow. I am stoked!

Nice job on the 20. The weight loss of water during a run in warm temps is crazy. I have the same thing happen to me and its hard to fathom how that all works out. Hope you recovered over the weekend. Ole Miss almost had yalls number again. I think Bama will take the SEC easily this year. LSU is a hot pile of garbage and will probably drop another game or two before November. The only good thing about that is our game on 11/5 would probably be a night game that way.

So my 10 Mile race this morning could have been a disaster. I woke up late, it was hot & sunny, and I felt a wee bit hungover because I stayed up too late the night before celebrating the Spartans win over Notre Dame. :drinking1I even had my shirt on inside out, which my friends thought was hilarious. Disaster right? NOT! I PR'd!!! Somehow the minute I started running I felt better and I knocked a whopping 8 minutes off my time from last year AND I negative split the last 3 miles! I can't help but wonder how I would have done had I done everything right...official time 1:40:02.

Congrats @CherieFran and @jhorstma on your PR's!!!! :yay:

Congrats on the PR! A hangover and a PR! I don't think you should think what could have done, I think drinking beer the night before a race is your new pre race routine for success!

Hi guys! So I don't have a training journal, so this might a be a long post since I love reading other people's race recaps. :)

So it all begins several years ago ... just kidding! So last night I went to a football game with DH. Initially I was a bit peeved that our biggest home game (as well as a Beyonce concert!) was the night before my half, but it proved to be a blessing in disguise since it took my mind off my usual pre-race jitters (and we won without going into triple OT).

The first thing DH did when he woke was trash talk some CFB since our teams are meeting next weekend. It was great because it relaxed me immediately. We left later than I wanted, but ended up having lots of time to spare once we got there and somehow found parking right at the start line. The only hiccup was the water had run out at the sinks at the porta-potties and there were no hand sanitizers. So a lot of people had sticky soapy fingers after using them. At 7am, the marathoners were off; a small but mighty group. 15 min later, we were off. I had gotten a prime location at the front. I felt silly since I'm not a fast runner, but every second not weaving counts, right?

The weather was beautiful and clear and I even saw a dolphin in the water. Didn't realize how fast my first mile was, but I think I settled in OK although a bit too fast. I did get lost twice. Good job everyone on your races this weekend! A lot of PR's and good runs!!!!

At first, when I started thinking about it - it seemed silly.

But the more I let the idea snowball ... it seemed ... perfect? IDK! I'm just excited to do something that all my friends can take part in - even the littles and the non-runners - and want to just give it a feel of the weekends that I love so much.

And, duh, Keels-specific bling. Because obviously.

How about picture stops?

Ooh the bling! What are you thinking? Beer spinner? I saw a bottle opener medal that looks really cool:

But not so kid friendly .... ;)

ATTQOTD: only by accident, never by design.

I ran my final attempt at a POT for Dopey on Sunday. The Log Run 10 Miler, and it was my best run to date. My biggest problem still is a mental thing. I get to around mile 6 or 7 and my brain starts telling me I can't do it despite my body not feeling bad at all. I finished in 1:29:38, about 8 seconds faster than @DopeyBadger told me I had to run to move up a corral based on last years corrals. Whether it works that way of not this year is yet to be seen, but at the very least it won't hurt me, and it was about a 10 minute PR over my 10 miler back in July. The course was beautiful and mostly downhill. If only I could get passed the head games I would be doing great. I know that part will come, and hopefully I get there before January.

QOTD: Do you ever run "naked"? By naked I mean without a tracking device for time and/or mileage.... not nude.
Never have. I like being able to know how far I've run. I could run without time but I don't think I could run without knowing distance.

@Keels you are awesome! That 5K sounds really cool. A cousin of mine organizes our local color runs. I can't wait to hear more about your race.

My first thought was shoes, too.

ATTQOTD: Only when I forget to charge it and the battery is dead. :D That has happened like once or twice, although then I will use my phone to track it, but that's in my pocket so I can't see it immediately for feedback.

So, ran my 9k on Sunday morning. My physio had cleared my on Friday, and said he was pleased with my progress (and made all my exercises harder!). I was a little disappointed with my time. It took me 61 minutes to run the 9km. My left knee had no issues, and could have kept going. My right knee however stopped me for a walk break a few times. Frustrating, but the fact that i made it through 9kms, and was able to walk this morning was a massive step forward with this it band injury.

Race itself was in a great location - we got to run over the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. I suck at posting pictures here, but for those who love looking at the bling I have posted it on my instagram @belindarae15

I have now 6 weeks to step up my physio game and get myself ready for wine & dine!

I don't have your race listed in the OP, if you let me know the name of the 9k I can add it to the list for you if you would like me to.

QOTD: Do you ever run "naked"? By naked I mean without a tracking device for time and/or mileage.... not nude.

Not now, but I did when I could run outdoors on a regular basis. I knew how far most of my routes were and would leave the watch at home every so often. Not surprisingly, I tended to be faster without the watch.

My first thought was shoes, too.

Thanks everyone....several mentioned shoes. I had gone and bought new running shoes a few weeks ago. So...yes I'm in good running shoes. But I appreciate the feedback!

The more time goes on, the more I'm suspecting just inflammation from new exercise and that's it's just my knee being like, "whoa, whoa. What are we doing here? Running 3x per week?! I don't think so."

But I'm like, "yep. It's happenin', Knee. Get used to it."

We'll learn to live with each other and my newfound running interest.

I will say this last run was the first time I felt like I might not can do this. I'm second guessing trying for the princess half. Wondering if I should allow myself more time and aim for a half later in the year? I'm concerned if I get sick and have to skip some runs, or if it's icy, and I can't run....not sure I could still run a half by Feb.

Problem with waiting is...princess half is my SOLE motivation. Star Wars doesn't motivate me. Avengers doesn't motivate me. Anything non-Disney is not a motivation either....at this point. (I'm hoping after I runDisney, I'll get hooked and will run more locally).

I'm rambling. I've never cared about running/walking/physical exercise of any kind, honestly.
Part of me says I need to allow myself more time before attempting something so big. Part of me says...if I wait too long, my motivation will die a terrible horrible death. Thought about running the 10k Princess instead of the half...but running through the castle is a HUGE (main) part of my motivation.

running at WDW would be such a huge expense...id hate to spend so much $ on 10k, when my heart really wants that half.

Aaaaaand, I'm still rambling. No need to respond unless you want to...just need to "think" this out loud, I guess.
