The Running Thread - 2016

I've never been to those forums. How are they?
Not bad - they're broken down into pretty specific categories and some get more traffic than others. I pop in every couple weeks for a look around.

How do y'all time intervals when you're doing training?
I use the iSmoothRun app on my iPhone. I used to use Runkeeper and both are good if you like to listen to music, as the interval alerts duck in and out while music plays.

QOTD: With the Olympic games starting this month, what event are you looking forward to watching the most?

ATTQOTD: I can't pick just one - I want to see them aaaaaallllll!!!!! Alas, I'm restricted to whatever NBC chooses to show me during primetime. ~sigh~ If I had to pick a handful of events I'm most excited about...

Track & Field: Men's and women's marathons, 100m, 200m, 1500m, 5,000m, 10,000m
Soccer
Swimming
Gymnastics
Equestrian
Beach Volleyball
Sailing
Triathlon

QOTD: With the Olympic games starting this month, what event are you looking forward to watching the most?

The Olympics. The Olympics is just one giant event to me. There may be sports/events I have less or little interest in, but it's still the Olympics.

This is pretty much me. I love gymnastics the most, followed by track and swimming, but I'll watch any of it.

My monthly totals make me feel a little "less than", even though I know I shouldn't be comparing to you all. I'm just shy of 40. I was tapering for my big races and then had like a week of easy runs before my big training plan kicked off last week (which starts off relatively low mileage.) So it was a big month for me in terms of races but not for total mileage.
Next month should be one of my biggest mileage months yet though :) And each month following. As I head into the bigger distance territory like all you crazy kids :)

Honestly, I don't even really keep track of my mileage. I just run. Maybe that's weird, but that's what I do!

I love the long sprints (not doing them, but watching them). Especially the 400 and 800 meters. Eager to see how Rupp does with his double. Really it all sucks me in, I love watching the Olympics. Winter or Summer, I love it! I even found myself glued to coverage of Curling...

I kind of love curling! I just want to breathe for those people! lol

I think that's the same one I used before I got my Garmin. The thing I didn't like about it was that when my kids would call me it would stop the intervals from beeping at me even after the call was finished. I had to take the phone out of my flip belt and reopen the app to start the beeps again :)

I love, love, love the Olympics! I would definitely say that women's gymnastics is what I am most excited to watch, followed by track and field, and swimming. But the beauty of NBC's coverage of the Olympics is all of those sappy "human interest stories" about the athletes! That will get me hooked into whatever sport the featured athlete is competing in. Long live Bob Costas!

Oh and 53.4 miles for July! I know it doesn't sound like much, but it's an improvement from June so I'll take it gladly!

I am such a sucker for the human interest stories!

We all have different race schedules and are all at different points in our training cycles, so as long as you are "on schedule" for your personal training plan, you have achieved your goal, and you should be ecstatic with your monthly total. In any case, there is no optimal amount of mileage... only what is right for you at any given time.

Re: QOTD:

Do pray for the athletes' health and safety, and all attending! What we are going to be shown on TV will be great and rose colored, I'm sure, but few people know that dozens of swimmers have already gotten sick from the lagoon they were training in (raw sewage is spilling into competition waters). A platform for the yacht races collapsed Saturday, with no one on it, thankfully. A security firm understaffed, so national guard types have been called in (about 3,000 of them). And, let's not forget the virus.

Unfortunately, these things, and especially security, will have me on edge for this Olympics. Major events like this seem to magically work themselves out, so we shall see if the IOC survives Rio.

Definitely. I really wish they could have changed the location. I read yesterday that Australian athletes had laptops stolen from the Olympic Village during a fire evacuation.

OLYMPICS are one of my favorite things...I will watch anything I can. Favorites are of course swimming & track/marathon, but I love even the rowing, kayaking, fenching...doesn't matter I'll watch it. Gymnastics of course too, makes me nervous watching them. The DVR will be working overtime. I even enjoy the side stories on athletes.
Thats me too! I DVR everything I can't watch. I'll even watch Ping Pong, some of the countries like China and Japan are crazy good at that.

QOTD: With the Olympic games starting this month, what event are you looking forward to watching the most?

All of it. I will watch anything that NBC will dish up and I will cry and cry and cry. I'm such a sucker! I got mad at Comcast a few months ago and cancelled my cable so no DVR for me right now, just my antenna. The Olympics is going to be the first time I've missed having it, I think. On the plus side, it will prevent me from recording more content than there are waking hours in the day!

ATTQOTD: omg, the Olympics!! I love the Olympics and always watch as much as I can. The events I'm most interested in are gymnastics and swimming, but I'll watch anything. I was pretty much glued to the TV during all the U.S. Trials coverage, but the actual Olympics are even better.

The Olympics. The Olympics is just one giant event to me. There may be sports/events I have less or little interest in, but it's still the Olympics.
This is so me as well! When the Olympics are on, I'll watch pretty much any of it. I remember one morning in 2012 just sitting down and watching one of the shooting events and I got so into it! I never care about shooting, but it was the Olympics, and it was a close contest between a couple countries, so it sucked me in.

ATTQOTD:

I'm not an Olympics person. The IOC makes the entire competition distasteful to me. The athletes deserve so much better. I face the same conundrum with the Workd Cup, but I can't resist watching because I love the sport. I'm not sure if I'll be able to stomach Qatar 2022 after the human rights atrocities taking place and being swept under the rug by FIFA.

That said, I am shocked how much I've grown to love watching big marathons and distance running. I will definitely make an attempt to watch everything over 1,500 meters. I'll also watch the basketball; mainly because I want to see how Kyrie does (Cavs fan) and the interaction between the three Warriors. I'll catch some of the soccer because I'm a junky; although since few nations are even sending their top U-23 squad it's hard to take too seriously. ETA: The women's competition is quite good though, it is still arguably as good or better than winning the World Cup for them and features the best players.

I'm a golfer, love golf, and it's a joke that it's in the Olympics. Purely a revenue grab by the IOC aimed at increasing US television money. Sports where the Olympics are clearly not the apex of achievement shouldn't be in the Olympics. Unfortunately, those sports are the revenue sports for a reason and I know they're not going anywhere. If only the IOC could convince the rest of the world to play NFL Football.

Oh goodness Yes, ping pong gets nuts watching. I need to print out a schedule of everything.

I have gotten hooked on distance running too. I watched the entire LA Marathon and the Boston Marathon!

Funny story here...

Lying in bed, reading before going to sleep, Saturday night. Try to straighten left leg and discover I can't...knee feels stiff.

Wake up Sunday and cannot put weight on left leg. Knee is swollen. Spend day wracking my brain, trying to remember how I could have injured my knee. Didn't recall doing anything to tweak it. Start to panic...I've got races coming up and I blew my knee lying in bed, reading????

Sunday evening, can put weight on it and walk without limping. Explaining to hubby, who looks at it and agrees it is swollen. Still ticked that I injured my knee and don't know how it happened.

Complaing to hubby that not only is knee swollen but it is red and feels warm to touch.

LIGHT BULB moment!

I didn't injure myself; I've been bit by an insect or spider!

Momentarily celebrate...then start worrying about Lyme disease...

Yikes! I hope that clears up pretty soon!

QOTD: With the Olympic games starting this month, what event are you looking forward to watching the most?

ATTQOTD: It's a hard decision with so many good events taking place. I am very interested in watching the Marathon on August 21.

Most track events, especially any involving Usain Bolt (100, 200 and 4x100), powerlifting, and soccer.

TBA - @IamTrike - Medoc Trail Marathon (NG / N/A)
TBA - Iamtrike - Peak to Creek Marathon (3:12:00 / N/A)
TBA - @derekleigh - Meredith Bay Trick of Trot 5K (21:30 / N/A)(or sub 7:00 pace)

Any updates on these events listed above as far as dates? TIA

To the best of info, 10/29

Oh no! That sounds like a bad bite!

For me I used posting as a reward for moving from a "getting my general fittness back" phase (learning to walk a few miles every day) to actually running. Then once I got there I didn't exactly know where to jump in lol! I also deal with social anxiety and the Internet can be a scary place, but this thread has been so welcoming and helpful to everyone who has posted so I feel pretty safe posting here

Fellow member of the social anxiety club here. Welcome. You didn't know when to jump in, well now you are here so don't jump out. Then you'll be like Crush trying to figure out when to jump back in during "Finding Nemo". You're amongst friends so don't be shy.

LOL, thanks! The main rule is that I must be present for all family activities (running can not be an excuse). So if we've got something to do at 8am, then I start running at 3am. If we have something that lasts till 9pm, then I run at 10pm. Most days, this isn't an issue though as I just run for 90 min once I get home from work. We live close to work. So the commute is short and we commute together. So that definitely opens up the rest of the day as well. It's important to keep in perspective for myself that to me running is my hobby, but my family is my life.

PS - She said "Yea, I barely recognize you. When did you get that scar?" LOL!

I was joking with you, clearly you have it all worked out. That's great. I'm not sure this is a hobby though, you spend as much time doing this as most people do at their job. :teeth: I just hope when I am healed that I can start to show the same level of commitment as most of you guys with your mileage. I'm jealous.

ATTQOTD: It's a hard decision with so many good events taking place. I am very interested in watching the Marathon on August 21.

I am of the minority here. I love the Olympics. But we cancelled cable a few months ago because I am sick of paying $150/month for 3 million channels when we only watch 4. So we now have only Netflix and Hulu. There may be a chance Hulu will show the Olympics but not live, obviously. So I may not get to see any of them. But, if I do, I LOVE the girls gymnastics (I can't call them women since they are like 16 years old). They are so fun to watch. I also like swimming, beach volleyball, and this year I would love to watch the marathon. Some of the track and field is fun but the stuff leading up to it takes longer than the race so it's frustrating.

I am also a sucker for the fluff pieces but these people work so hard to get there they deserve some recognition.

Wait, so your telling me I may have been bitten by a spider and might not have needed this surgery. Where were you last week? Seriously, I am glad it was nothing major Now you can go kill it in your races.

Thanks...it's better today. I tend to react strongly to insect bites, so I'm still laughing at myself for not going there sooner...I was just so worried that I had really torn something/blown my knee out that I failed to think of the obvious!
