The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What type of meal have you had the night (or day before) a long run / race that you will never eat again based on how you felt during the run?

I haven't really found anything that works particularly great, but I know that ribs, chicken, steak, french fries and coleslaw are a big no-no. Before my first marathon that's the meal I ate, since dubbed the "Turf & Turf & Turf", and it did not go so well. It is a running joke for my family. I've started sticking to bland foods the couple days before races and it seems to be helping with GI issues.

I love pizza for dinner before a long run.

I thought I would too. Mine was the night before my December 2014 Marathon. I should add cheese doesn't sit well with me, but my thinking was, its a lot of calories, lots of carbs and will help get me to the finish line. Unfortunately it just sat sooo heavy in my stomach that I felt bloated the entire run. I definitely learned pizza isn't a good night before marathon meal.

ATTQOTD: Chicken Alfredo. No more pasta with dairy in it for me before a big running day.

Your comment makes me laugh. We've been re-watching the show The Office on Netflix and just finished the 5k run episode. For you, or anyone, who hasn't seen it or doesn't remember ...

My go-to meal for dinner before a race is usually sashimi or sushi. You get miso soup for sodium & protein, easily digestible protein from the fish, and simple carbs from the rice. Couple that with a big pancake breakfast earlier in the morning, and you've got all your energy needs met. :)

ATTQOTD: I don't think I have eaten anything before a race that I would never eat again. I try to becareful about what I eat. Before Darkside I drank way too much water the night before and that was not pleasant. I learned quickly not do that again.

ATTQOTD: So far I haven't run into trouble, but I've also been careful. I had a great training run once after nachos. Just a little salsa and cheese, not loaded or anything. I've done that a couple more times and been pretty happy with it.

Mainly, I eat kinda light and simple the lunch and dinner before. The bigger meals are taken in 2 days in advance, and breakfast the day before.

Kind of food related. Wanted to let @michigandergirl know what I will be wearing for the RnR 10k in Chicago in case we end up looking for each other. I may have just purchased this running skirt 5 minutes ago and expedited the shipping.

That is super cute! We should definitely try to meet and take a pic for the Disboards. I have no idea what I'm wearing yet and I just found out my friend/running partner can't get out of work until five on Friday, so we won't be able to make it to the expo in time to pick up our bibs and will have to wait until morning - this always gives me anxiety!

Trying to catch up - spent another long weekend off the grid. This thread was busy! Welcome to all you lurkers who have exposed yourselves - okay that sounds kind of dirty, but welcome anyway!

Congrats to all racers over the weekend and sorry for those whose races were cancelled, that stinks.

ATTQOTD: Add me to the lactose intolerant crowd, chicken alfredo is the worst! I also wouldn't recommend anything with cabbage...o_O

Ack, I hate when plans get changed! I have enough anxiety when I have all the time in the world. If RnR wasn't set on people having to be there in person to pick up their own bibs I would work something out to get yours. But if you find any loopholes or think of any thing that I can help you with, just let me know. I am staying at the hotel attached to the Expo on Friday and Saturday night :)

Bland was probably the wrong word, simple would have been better. Udon is a favorite of mine before races now, it seems to be working out pretty well.

Is it odd that I often will eat a heartier lunch and then go with like a peanut butter and jelly or simple chicken for dinner? I find it works for me. But I'm not running marathons so I'm sure my strategy would change with the hefty distances.

My downfall is when I don't hydrate smartly the day(s) before. Getting better at that.

Oh man, one of the BEST episodes!! I re-watched that series last winter (well, I stopped when Steve Carrell left and then jumped to the series finale) and enjoyed it as much as when it was first on TV!

OMG. We did the exact same thing! LOL. We just did it earlier this year and then my bf has been popping it back on again lately. We like 30 minute shows to watch when we eat and there is just nothing else that fits the bill. lol

Not odd at all. After a hearty carb filled brunch, my dinner before the Disney marathon was a Smuckers PB&J, carrots and crackers.

I have revised my goal to 3:00:00, which hopefully is doable. :) I basically just want to be able to finish (there are thunderstorms predicted right now). This is my Half Fanatics qualifying race (3 in 90 days), second attempt after last fall's 2 in 16 days attempt got messed up because of the W&D situation.

Hope the weather holds out for you. good luck!

I'm with you @LSUlakes...I need to avoid the dairy. Damn lactose intolerance...why does lactose have to be so delicious???

I may not have any before, but after a run I am prepared to deal with the consequences of my choice. No way in the 24 hours after a race I wont have chocolate milk and ice cream at some point!!!!

Question I meant to ask when we were doing monthly totals - do you include your walking mileage? For example, I usually walk anywhere from a quarter to half mile before & after each run. Also, my coworker & I will walk 1 or 2 miles on our lunch break a couple of times a week. Just wondering if I could/should count those.
