QOTD: What tips do you have for chaffing? What stories? When running distance, what has rubbed you raw... especially things you did not expect.
I never had problems with chafing until I started lifting. Then my thighs got thicker and they started rubbing when I run. If I stop lifting for a few months, the problem disappears. However, that hurts my running. So my solution is compression shorts. I wear them on every run because my problem begins immediately. No more chafing.

My worst chafing incident come on a 20 mile weekend long run. My compression shorts separated at the seam in my groin area about 5 miles into the run and I ran the remaining 15 miles while my thighs not only made contact, but with the material of the compression shorts "wadded" up in places where it had torn. I didn't realize how bad it was until I got home and my wife pointed out the blood stains down both of my legs. The shower was agonizing. Lost lots of skin and took weeks to heal.

Up until my training for my first marathon, I laughed at those stories of people's nips chaffing as I figured I've run many half marathons and haven't ever experienced! Oh my my my my...I experienced when I went out on my first ever 15-miler. Ever since, if I'm running on a hot/humid day or running anything last more than 13 miles of two hours, I tape those bad boys up!
My nipples have to be coated with vaseline to avoid bleeding. If I run without it, I bleed. The pain isn't that bad, but you look ridiculous running with two bloody spots on your shirt. If it is a longer run in the heat, they become streaks down the front of your shirt. :upsidedow

ATTQOTD: Luckily no chaffing issues yet. I wear compression shorts or pants always (mostly because I have nightmares about running shorts "riding up" from high school gym class and also it's the vanity of that lovely sucked in look.) So I think that helps.
And because I have...ummmm....plentiful upper-body assets?...I'm always wearing industrial strength support structures.
HOWEVER...I'm upping my distance this year from last year and so I'm sure my answer will be different a year from now.
Note to self: Buy some body glide.

QOTD: What tips do you have for chaffing? What stories? When running distance, what has rubbed you raw... especially things you did not expect.

My worst chaffing has always come from reffing soccer over running, though I've had a few problems running as well. Spending an entire day outside in the summer heat reffing 6+ games can reek havoc on your legs. By the time you realize you forgot Body Glide it's too late.

I saw my first runner with bloody nip stains during the Disney full around mile 17,luckily that area has never been a problem for me as I think I've done long training runs and while I always apply plenty of bodyglide on my inner thighs I never did on my nips during training runs and never had an issue. For any half or full I use like half a stick on my inner thighs in the morning since I know that's a problem area and just in case I will apply on my feet and nips just in case.To be even more safe I bring with me on these longer races a mini bodyglide to reapply to my inner thighs during the race, for this years Disney full I think that mini bodyglide helped more for my foot which was getting a blister which is very rare,I blame the shoes I wore without ever going further than 6 miles on them.I remember my first full I used like half the bodyglide before the race and luckily had no issues on my inner thighs during the race but about 4 minutes after finishing I started noticing I was feeling some chafing starting, after walking to the bus and all the way to my room at the hotel it was too late,I had enough chafing to ruin the rest of my trip. After that experience I reapply mid race and haven't had issues since.

ATTQOTD:

I will get nipple chafing when running for longer than 1-2 miles while wearing a shirt with any type of bagginess/movement. I always wear a skin-tight tech shirt as my first layer and have never had any issues when doing so. My big chafing issues have been on my inner thighs, but it is usually just slight discomfort for a couple days. I've never pre-applied bodyglide and trying to apply mid-race has not been very successful. I'm probably fortunate that I haven't had worse issues.

If any of you fellas have sore post-run nips (I literally cannot believe I just typed that); may I suggest pure lanolin for relief. It comes in a tube and is sold at Target/Baby's R Us type places in the "nursing" sections of the baby aisles. By the pumps, etc. If it's too weird for you to be in that aisle...employ a lady to do it or you can buy online. Or if you are a dad already it's probably not gonna phase you.

I avoid chafing by using band-aids. Body Glide only lasts a few hours on me with the way I sweat, a lesson learned the hard way when I had to run without a shirt for the last eight miles of a 25-mile run. Waterproof band-aids last at least 11 hours and 21 minutes.

As for the unexpected chafing, I had a really bad experience in my tri in November. The salt running down into my shorts combined with the sweat already there and turned into crystals in the heat that caused chafing where no man ever wants it to occur. Painful, to say the least.

Anything longer than 7 miles, I use body glide on nips, crotch, and cheeks (not face cheeks). Also, if I've had any blisters on the toes recently, then I will also body glide the toes, but this seems to go in waves.

As for stories, one of my friends was running the Golden Gate Relay (like Ragnar... 12 runners per team, 2 vans, 191 miles) with us a couple years ago, and after his first run, his nipples were really sore. Since he had two more legs to go, he went into the store to buy something to put over them for the next runs. This worked, and he felt great for his remaining two legs. However, after the race finished on Sunday, he had to take a red-eye from San Francisco to New York to lead a rather-important potential merger meeting on Monday morning. He e-mailed us after his meeting stating what a great time he had during the race; HOWEVER, he wasn't really sure how his meeting went since he's not sure what he actually said after basically two nights of no sleep. Plus, it was impossible from a pain perspective for him to peel off the blister band-aids he applied to his nipples two days earlier, so he still had those on during the meeting. We had no idea he had used blister band-aids on his nipples, and we couldn't stop laughing, but I think he waited a good week before he was finally able to remove them.

Lots of activity recently! I've been traveling for work so playing a bit of catch up :) Someone asked about recovery yoga a couple pages ago and Runner's World has a yoga page with several routines. I like their essential yoga as well as their recovery yoga routines. http://www.runnersworld.com/tag/runners-world-yoga-center

Questions of the day:

Unusual race: Not a race in the traditional sense but the Road Runner store near me has adventure runs. They reveal a map right before the race with various stops, you go to as many of the stops as you can in an hour, each stop has a challenge, and then you get raffle tickets for completing the challenge. You don't have to do all the stops but the more stops you do, the more raffle tickets you get. Then everyone comes back to the store for the raffle drawings. It was a lot of fun.

There are other people at work that I know run so I limit my running talk at work to those people.

I don't have any tips for the chafing other than lots of body glide. It usually just becomes a problem for me around 10 miles or more. I definitely missed a couple spots during my first half marathon and they made themselves known later!

QOTD: What tips do you have for chaffing?
ATTQOD: My #1 tip: move to Florida! Half the year I'm so utterly drenched in sweat, it's like I'm taking a shower and a bath at the same time; pretty much impossible for skin-on-skin to chafe when it's that wet, lol! My #2 tip: Bodyglide doesn't do squat in our level of humidity - not for me, anyway. I use 2 Toms roll-on and it's much better! My #3 tip: Vaseline for feet and toes for long rain runs. My #4 tip: if you do chafe, coconut oil (which is a solid at room temp, similar in consistency to Crisco), is amazingly soothing.

I'm another that uses Body Glide to avoid chafing. I've really never had anything bad, although did also experience the tricep issue when running in a singlet that I didn't anticipate. Now that's just another spot I hit. I'm usually in either tights, capris or skirts with compression shorts, so that helps a lot to avoid thigh chafing.

Happy Friday to all! Got a easy 7 miler in yesterday on the treadmill @ 8:27 pace. 3-4 miles planned for this afternoon and lifting as well.

QOTD: What tips do you have for chaffing? What stories? When running distance, what has rubbed you raw... especially things you did not expect

Chaffing... 2015 Marsthon Weekend, I ran the Goofy Challenge. Everything was fine through the Half. In fact to this point I had never had chaffing of any kind. The issue built up during the marathon, but I did not notice. After the race and shower I felt a new pain in an area that should not feel such things. I then had 5 days with the family walking the parks. Bow legged does not give justice to my walk! So much pain. Every long race since has included a healthy application of Body Glide.

QOTD: Do you have a shoe rotation or just one pair at a time?
ATTQOTD: I usually have two training pairs that I rotate. Currently I'm down to one training pair and a lighter shoe for races and some speed work.

QOTD: Do you have a shoe rotation or just one pair at a time?

I currently have four that I rotate, though two are my primary shoes, and one is on the way out. The fourth is because they had a really good deal on my normal shoes.

Great topic that I will just sit back and observe. I'm on the verge of adding in my next pair and will read for tips!

I used to be a dancer and had like 20 pairs at one point only because I was a hoarder who never threw them away. Don't be me!
