The Rebels are Sizzling in JULY!

Hi Rebels, I'm Mike.

Now don't go getting all "Intruder Alert" on me because I know the password.
It's "Maura sent me".

I am excited to be joining the Rebel Alliance. I have been running for fitness and controlling cholesterol for a few years. Then after reading Chi Running, I ran my first 1/2 marathon in spring. DW (Rose&Mike) and I are registered for the Wine&Dine, we are staying in BWV right across Friendship Bay from Jane.
Considering the Morse Half in Indy Labor Day Weekend, since there is a DISmeet there, MyrtleBeach, since two inaugural races in one month would be cool, and possibly Memphis in December until taking a break until it thaws. But I might be biting off more than I can chew, it's just that Katie is providing such a good (bad?) example.

Thanks for letting me in!

Mike

Mike, :welcome:

Sounds like you have a great racing schedule for this fall. I think you are right, I would have to give in to the Dark Side too keep up with Katie. ;)

Mike- WELCOME!! I have a friend who recommended the Chi Running as well! Right now I am a walker who puts some spice in with running. I think I should really read that book!

Looks like a packed fall running sched! I'm a newbie to all of this so I'm taking mine nice and slow and doing the WDW 1/2 in Jan. I've been trolling my friends looking for recruits for the race!

Happy Sunday everyone!

Nikki – You are not alone, I pretty much a newbie at this also. I will be there for your first Half, hopefully I will be able to keep up with you. If anything, it would be nice to meet in person.

AFM – My sister called me and kind of hinted about doing DL ½ next year to get the coast too coast medal. It would be cool if we could share some of the expenses and do it together. My sister lives about 15 min from WDW, so she has done some racing there already. Unfortunately for me, she is a awesome runner and she finishes way ahead of me, but it is nice having family rooting me on at the end.

Well, I was able to get my 6 miles in this weekend, fairly consistent pace and felt OK. Next week starts another long training week.

Go Rebels! :woohoo:

Hi Rebels,

Nikki - great job getting out there even though your buddy was sick. I feel the same way you do about others running. When I did the 10K a few weeks ago I was laughing that the elites had already finished and I had only done a little over 2 miles. :) I just remember that I think it was Paula Radcliffe who said she didn't know how the slower runners/walkers were able to be on the courses for that long and that she had great respect for that. :thumbsup2

James - I hope your appointment goes well tomorrow. I'm crossing my fingers for you that the doctors are able to identify and treat the lung/liver issues quickly and easily. I'm 99% sure I'm going to do DL 1/2 next year too. I want the coast to coast medal as well. So perhaps I'll see you twice next year.

Mike - Welcome!!!! I'll be waving over to you in October. Can't believe how close it's getting. I haven't been to WDW since January and I'm going through a bit of withdrawal.

AFM - Our group did 10 miles yesterday. We ran through one of my favorite parts of NY, along the river by the statue of liberty. I just love it there. Considering we did 3 potty breaks and 3 water re-fill breaks, we averaged 15/min miles. I'm happy with that. No breathing issues and it was super humid. We decided we're going to do the Bronx Half Marathon Sunday August 15th. We're going to do it as a training run not at a race pace. But technically I guess this will be my first half. There are no medals :( and because my time will be over 3 hours, I won't have an officially scored time, so I'm still going to call W&D my first real half. Enjoy the rest of your weekend Rebels!

James- I would love to meet up for the WDW 1/2!!! I'm thinking there will be a big WISH meet at some point, and maybe the Rebels can get together too! I know we are going to be down there the 5th to the 15th. It is my winter break from school and we are making the most of it! The next time we could be down there won't be until May of 2012!!! But I don't want to think about that yet!

Oh and don't worry about keeping up with me! I'm a slow and steady kinda girl with the walking! Right now I'm about a 15.5 minute mile pace and don't see it going up more than that....but ya never know!

Jane- What lovely scenery to do your workout by!! Good luck on the Bronx 1/2! Glad to hear your lungs were doing well!

AFM- I am sore today!! I think I pushed it a little yesterday! But a good sore! Just some tight calf muscles and Hip muscle that I have been stretching ALL day! Happy that today is a rest day! Now I'm just debating if I want to get my walk in before/after work and outside/inside....We'll see how I feel when the alarm goes off at 6am tomorrow!

Wow. I can't believe it has been sooo long since I've checked in here.
Jane - glad you had a great birthday and are continuing to celebrate. Good news from the Dr. , yeah.:thumbsup2
Welcome Mike.:welcome:
James - here's some pixie dust for you for your Dr. appt.pixiedust:pixiedust:
Nikki - sounds like all is going well. :cool1:
And to all the Rebels, I have missed communicating with y'all here. Cheers for all the hard work and determination you all have shown.party:
AFM - I was away for a week at my cousin's house near Newport, RI. "Just us girls" had a great time. And yes, we did lots of walking because I was with my "Wednesday Walking Buddy." It was great to go out each morning on the beach and just walk and talk. Then, 2 days after I got home my son called and said his ship was scheduled to be in port for 21 days and it would be a great time to visit him. My husband and I tossed it around for a few hours and decided to bite the bullet and Just Do It (we haven't seen him in quite some time). So we called our son and said we were coming to visit him in Alaska. He was able to pull leave for 7 days so we made arrangements and flew out on July 28 and came home on July 5. What a great time we had. It was so wonderful to get to see him; it has been a while. My husband was thrilled he got to be on his ship for July 4. We got in a lot of hiking and sightseeing too. However, upon getting home I got the worst stomach bug ever. Today, I finally feel human again. I even got out to walk a bit which I have missed these past 5 days.
Anywho, it is nice to be home and back into routine. Now, all I have to do is push daughter to sign up for the WDW Marathon in Jan so I can join her for the Half.
Here's to a great week for all Rebels!:goodvibes

Hi Rebels!!!

OK, I have returned from the doctor and everything is fine with my liver. He asked me if I had broken a bone and I said no, but I did smack my knee with a hammer a couple of days before the test. BTW, I thought I broke my knee, it hurt! So he is pretty sure that was the reason the test looked funny. Anyway, he looked over the test data and he seems to think it is asthma and scheduled me to see a pulmonary doctor. Actually, this is great news for me. Compared to other lung diseases, I would prefer to have asthma.

Nikki – I think we are asthma buddies now! :)

I was also cleared to do my training and racing, yay! :woohoo:

Thought I'd share just a few of my Alaska pics.

Gretchen- What a wonderful 2 trips!! Nothing like being at the beach!! How nice it was to see your son!! I can't even imagine how awesome those trails were! Keep nagging at your daughter about the marathon....maybe she will come around!

James- Sorry to hear you have asthma, but at least it IS manageable and won't bother your training too much once you get it under control! I'm glad to have an asthma buddy on the team! Keep your training up, but controllable with the asthma until you see the pulmonary doctor! Make sure to keep the rescue inhaler available, as well as a cell phone! I never got out without mine (helps that it is also my iPod)! Haven't had an issue in a long time, but never hurts!

AFM- I did a nice slow 2 miles on the treadmill last night. I was still working out some calf tightness from my stellar workout on Sat!
This AM I got up and did about 2 miles, my clafs were still tight so I did it easy again....until they warmed up and then I decided to do 6 hill repeats! The hill/overpass is a gradual (incline over 1/10 of a mile) that goes over a city street. It felt great! Best of all I did it in the rain!! A few months ago I would have thrown in the towel and never gotten out there! So proud of myself!

Have a great day Rebels!

Hi Rebels!!!

Nikki – Looks like you have moved to the hardcore side of the fence. I remember in January when I walked in a blizzard with my local runners club. Personally, other than thunderstorms, I have no problem training in the rain. It looks like your training is going well. However, don’t over do it, those sport injuries can creep up and bit you.

Jane – The Bronx ½ closing at 3 hours seems to be a little unfair. I am glad that my running club takes walkers into consideration when putting on their races. I mean, what would it hurt to add a half an hour on to the closing time? That way the fitness walkers can get some bling and also have an official finish. Regardless of my rant, go out there and have fun. This will be some good training for the W&D ½ and boost your confidence level.

Gretchen - What a great trip too see your son. I was in the service and my parents would take trips to see me also. That is pretty special.

AFM – I have an appointment with the pulmonologist tomorrow. I have an 8 mile walk scheduled for today, but I think I will reduce it too 6 miles. I have been adjusting my scheduled mileage too keep from over-training. It sure is easy to do at this point in my training. However, I am not going to reduce my weekend long walk mileage. I am trying to get by with a slower pace. I am just trying to get my brain and body use to the long hours on the road.

I think that’s it. Have a great day Rebels!!!

Welcome Mike! Glad to be a "bad" influence on you. ;)

Life has been very overwhelming recently...house projects going on, lots of hours at work and plenty of scheduled off-work stuff. Giving up and calling in someone to clean my house as I don't have time to do it myself, except for before work, which distracts me from my workouts and that just isn't exceptable.

Got a weight training workout in on Monday and a 2 mile run yesterday. Weight training tonight and then hoping for more miles tomorrow morning.

Hi Rebels!!!

I did 7.5 miles this morning. I missed a turn that would have made it 8 miles. I did not feel like backtracking too get back on course. It looks like I was pretty close of hitting the mileage. I probably would have gone over otherwise.

I am thinking about adding a half marathon to my racing schedule.

http://www.runeffingham.com/heartland_half_marathon/

Has a closing time of 3 hours 30 minutes, so I should be able to finish in that time frame. The site says runners only, but I thought I would be ornery and walk the half anyway. :thumbsup2 I did notice that the heart shaped medal looks cool and I could use a little more race experience. What do the Rebels think of this?

Have a great day everyone. Go Rebels!!! :woohoo:

Hi Rebels!

Nikki - Sounds like you are back in the training game full force. I hope your calves are feeling better. I sometimes get calf tightness/soreness if I have missed some training and come back to it. I found that my form goes out of whack, but once I'm back in it once or twice it goes away again. Glad to hear you're back though! I'm proud of you too!!!!

James - I am so happy to hear that you do not have liver problems and it might just be asthma. It's so much easier to treat now that they have a diagnosis. I'm sure this will be such a great weight lifted off you mentally. The Bronx 1/2 doesn't give out bling (lame, I know.) I wouldn't be doing this except that my group is doing it as a training run. I mean, isn't that why we run - for medals??? :) By the way, love the heart shaped one. I think you should go for it, if it fits into your schedule.

Gretchen - What a great couple of weeks you have had. I hope you missed some of the heat wave here. But watch out b/c this weeks batch of humidity is just as bad. I'm so glad you saw your son. Loved the pictures.

Katie - I always say thumbs up to someone else cleaning the house. You've earned it. :thumbsup2

AFM - Well, I did 3.5 miles last night in the most treacherous humidity. But I did it and that's what counts. I also was able to walk to work yesterday morning which is another 3 miles. I'm going to see if i can get another run in tonight as tomorrow I have some plans. This weekend we have a 12 mile group run. I can't believe how far I've come. I'm not stressed about this 12 miler at all. Remember when I was flipping over 6?? I love progress. Enjoy the week rebels.

Have a great day everyone. Go Rebels!!! :woohoo:

Look at the Morse Marathon http://www.morsemini.com/course.html

It is in Indy, labor day weekend. Required pace is 17 minutes, so they seem a little friendlier to walkers, and course is flat.

Nothing against Effingham, I've never run there.

Mike

James - A lung disease?! I can't believe the person at the doctor's office would tell you that you have a lung disease but then say she can't read the tests. She had no business doing that.

I am very glad that the doc gave you better news than the lady on the phone. You're right that asthma is not great, but it is definitely better than lung disease.

I really like that heart medal, and since it's all about the bling, I say go for it! I checked out the site and I didn't see where it says you must be a runner. I think as long as you finish in the alotted time, there's nothing to stop you from going for it. Be ornery!

Nikki - Glad you're feeling like everything is back on schedule. Hope Margy's feeling better (traitor!)

I know you're excited about the half, I'm excited for you, too! You will have such a blast. I'm proud of you, too, for recognizing that you have accomplished so much and come so far.

Mike - Welcome to the Rebels! (Love your username, by the way!) You've given us the password, so clearly you know of our zero-tolerance policy toward intruders. (Except for Nikki, who makes friends with them.)

There are a few of us who will be at W&D in October. It should be a fun race. I am attempting to get some of the chiwalking techniques into my routine. The tempo walking is definitely a big help to me.

I say if you want to try all those races, go for it! Just don't wear yourself out. I think maybe Katie might be some sort of cyborg and not at all human. Perhaps she is a spy for the other side sent to infiltrate us and wear us down by making us feel inferior...

Jane - Talking about the elites finishing before you, I remember at the Princess, there were runners driving by waving and honking their horns at us as we walked 3/4 of the way through. Both disheartening and kind of cool, that they were taking the time to encourage the "slowpokes."

But Paula's right - we "slowpokes" are walking or running for a longer period of time thant he elites. We're out there still hot and sweaty while they're already in their air conditioned cars, heading towards a cool shower and a change of clothes.

15 min. per mile is a great speed, especially for the heat and humidity. You should be very proud of that.

What kind of race doesn't give out bling?! That's outrageous. Really, what's the point?

You rock that 12 miler, you hear?! :woohoo:

Gretchen - So cool that you got to see your son and Alaska! Those are great pics. Such a beautiful place. Glad you are finally feeling human again. :)

Katie - Sorry you have been so overwhelmed lately, but glad you did something about it by getting someone else to clean the house. Give yourself more time to focus on the important things. :thumbsup2

I've been a total slacker, lately. I've not been training like I should for the VB RnR in September. We just got a new puppy, and she requires constant monitoring, or else I will be spending my days cleaning up little tootsie rolls and lemonade spills everywhere. But I'm trying to refocus myself. Wish I had Katie's willpower.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and stays cool!

James- The heartland medal is SOOOO CUTE!! I want one, but so not ready for it yet!

Jane- You get out there and rock those 12 miles!!! I just did 6 today, and was freaking out but by the time I was done I wanted to do 1 more!!!

Andrea- I hope you are enjoying that new puppy!! Is it a dog that will turn into a running partner? I am looking for a dog that would be my walking/running buddy!

AFM- I had done GREAT this week!!! I did not miss 1 workout!!! I feel so awesome!! I got up this AM and did a WONDERFUL 6+ miles! (1.5ish hours) I had minimal shin and calf pain during mile 1 and then NOTHING!!! I was cruising! I did add some light jogging in at times. When I was at the 2 mile mark my boss, and friend, called to see how I was doing! She and her 1 year old daughter wanted to join me! We met up at the trail head and I did my last 2 miles with them! When I started with them I felt as if I was starting FRESH!

I experimented with food on the trail. I tried the Cliff's bar shock blocks and like them! I don't know if the "did" anything for me but I read that when you workouts get longer you need to replenish. I took 1 about every 15 to 20ish minutes when I had my water sips. I also had some Gatorade after 4 miles.

Thank you all for your wonderful support and encouragement! I am officially back ON the wagon!:cool1:

Thanks to all for the Warm Welcome:dance3: It is great to be part of a team.

James - How did it go at the pulmonologists on the 14th. Did you register for the Heartland race yet?

Nikki - Glad you found something you can eat on the go. It will come in handy in January. 90 minutes before work, what dedication:woohoo:

Andrea - I'd suggest crate training your puppy so you can work out until he is old enough to join you. And I would not suggest "tootsie rolls" as a good workout food:scared1:

Jane - Hope the 12 miles went well. Sounds like you are ready for W&D.

Gretchen - Love the pictures of Alaska. I guess I'll have to train for the Midnight Sun Marathon. Must have been nice for your son to have you come. I went lots of places when I was in the Navy, and the best trip was when my wife & newborn met the ship in San Francisco.

AFM - Normal week. 4 miles tuesday after work with DW. Hate the heat, but need to get ready for Florida. Halves on the treadmill thursday AM, then today we had the long run in the park 10.7 miles. I got us lost and sent us up a big hill. DW just called me "Stupid Judy", but did not resort to violence. I am thankful for her patience. You can see her version of thte story on the BL thread. Also made DWs lodging reservations for Princess today. See you next week.

Mike

Hi Rebels!!!

Pulmonologist Update – It is official. I have moderate to severe asthma. It was a great doctor visit and I really like him. My wife didn’t think she would be able to make it, but at the last minute was able too. It was nice having her there for support. He has me on a daily inhaler that I take every 12 hours. It seems to be working because I have been feeling better and I have not needed to use the rescue inhaler since Thursday. So, it looks like I am starting to get this under control. I have another breathing test and doctor visit in three weeks.

Mike – I have not registered yet for the race, still thinking about it.

Nikki – 6+ miles, now that is getting it done, great job. Sounds like you getting your nutrition dialed in, which is really important. We are out there for a long time and get hungry.

Andrea – What is great about a half is you can kind of slack off on training and get away with it. You are a seasoned half marathoner already, I am pretty sure you will have yourself ready. Congrats on the new puppy.

AFM – Sunday I did my long walk for the week, 17 miles. :scared1: Whew, it was definitely on long morning. Most of the time I can get myself mentally ready for these long walks, but I was not feeling it this time. I did a lot of physical work outdoors the day before, so I was a little tired when I got out of bed. Plus, I fell asleep early and did not get my stuff ready for the next morning. Luckily, I got up and was able to get prepared in short order. I have to admit, the whole walk was brutal mentally. I guess there will be days like this. At least I know if I come to the marathon mentally unprepared, I am still able to soldier through it and finish. So far I am finding that over 15 miles takes a different kind of mindset and it is humbling. I have a deeper respect now for anyone that has finished a 26.2 mile race.

Have a great week Rebels!
