The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It is bordered by Rhode Island and Connecticut to the south, New York to the west, and Vermont and New Hampshire to the north; at its east lies the Atlantic Ocean. Most of its population of 6.6 million lives in the Boston metropolitan area. The eastern half of the state consists of urban, suburban, and rural areas, while Western Massachusetts is mostly rural. Massachusetts is the most populous of the six New England states and ranks third among U.S. states in GDP per capita.

Massachusetts has been significant throughout American history. Plymouth was the second permanent English settlement in North America. Many of Massachusetts's towns were founded by colonists from England in the 1620s and 1630s. During the eighteenth century, Boston became known as the "Cradle of Liberty" for the agitation there that led to the American Revolution and the independence of the United States from Great Britain. It was also a center of the temperance movement and abolitionist activity before the American Civil War. In 2004, Massachusetts became the first U.S. state to legally recognize same-sex marriage. The state has contributed many prominent politicians to national service, including the Adams family and the Kennedy family.

Originally dependent on fishing, agriculture, and trade with Europe, Massachusetts was transformed into a manufacturing center during the Industrial Revolution. During the twentieth century, the state's economy shifted from manufacturing to services. Today, the state is a leader in higher education, health care technology, high technology, and financial services.

As late as 1795, the population of Massachusetts was nearly uniformily (95%) of British ancenstry.

waheyyy!

Massachusetts has a long history with amateur athletics and professional teams. Most of the major professional teams have won multiple championships in their respective leagues. Massachusetts teams have won five Stanley Cups (Boston Bruins), seventeen NBA Championships (Boston Celtics), three Super Bowls (New England Patriots), and eight World Series (seven for the Boston Red Sox, one for the Boston Braves). The state is also the home to the Basketball Hall of Fame (Springfield) and the Volleyball Hall of Fame (Holyoke); sports that were both invented in the Commonwealth.

"You haven't done anything all day!""No mom, I got up at 6AM to go to school, took 3 tests, ran 2 miles, did 2 pages of math, wrote 3 paragraphs on world history, walked home from school in 98 degree weather, and finished my homework."

Some kids were dropped as a baby ... you were clearly thrown in the air, smacked by a ceiling fan, hitting the wall, and tossed out the window..

Dear bed. I'm sorry I abandoned you this morning. I miss you and I want you back. Forgive me? <3

39.) Gillette Stadium. Opened in 2002, it’s been host to many playoff games in only its third season. Not to mention, the Patriots have an impressive record while playing at Gillette Stadium which led to the defense nickname, “Homeland Defense” in 2003.

38.) Super Bowl 38. After an impressive season and the beginnings of a very long winning streak, the Patriots returned to the Super Bowl after a one-year absence, and we couldn’t have been happier.

37.) Safety Rodney Harrison. C’mon, the guy just rules. He’s tough, smart and nasty. He hits hard and doesn’t mess around, which is probably why he isn’t as well liked as he should be. In just a few short years he has become one of our all-time favorite players.

36.) Super Bowl 36. There is footage of then Ram, Ricky Prohel, saying “Tonight a Dynasty is born.” Little did he know at the time how right he was. February 3rd, 2002 was hands down, the best day of our life. The Patriots walked into the Superdome to play against the vaunted St. Louis Rams. Few picked the Pats to win.
