William Says Only Paddington Bear Knew What Was in Queen's Iconic Handbag
Prince William told a group of schoolchildren that only Paddington Bear knew the contents of Queen Elizabeth II's iconic handbag as he viewed floral tributes at Sandringham House on Thursday
The new Prince and Princess of Wales traveled to Norfolk where they were given a home on the Sandringham estate by the queen who died at Balmoral Castle aged 96 on September 8.
Since her death, members of the public have left tributes of flowers and cards outside royal residences around the country, many of them including references to Paddington Bear, the beloved children's character with whom the queen starred in a comedy sketch to mark her Platinum Jubilee in June.
A video of the prince meeting a group of schoolchildren who had drawn a Paddington themed tribute, uploaded to Twitter by Howard Junior School, shows him discussing the jubilee skit which saw the queen take tea with the fictional bear before the celebratory pop-concert outside Buckingham Palace.
"Do you like Paddington?" he asked. "Did you see the skit with Paddington and my grandmother? It was good wasn't it?"
He then went on to reference a scene from the skit where Paddington asked the queen whether she would like to try a marmalade sandwich, which the perpetually hungry character famously keeps in his hat for emergencies.
To this the queen was filmed showing the bear that she kept her own emergency marmalade sandwich in her black handbag—the contents of which has been cause for speculation in recent decades.

"Did you all wonder what she'd have in her handbag?" William asked the schoolchildren.
"No one ever knows what's in her handbag...but Paddington did!"
Since the queen's death, Paddington has been a regular feature in media clip packages and tributes to the queen, so much so that at the same engagement in Sandringham, William said the fictional bear might have taken over from the monarch's beloved corgis as a mascot.
When meeting a mother and baby during his walkabout on Thursday, the prince pointed out the infant's Paddington sweater and said: "I think Paddington might have knocked the corgis off the top spot! I'm not sure how they'll take [that]. The Corgis won't take that very well."
