The Pursuit of Disney Magic (June 7-14, 2008) ~ UPDATED 9/30 pg. 191

I loved Holes, but haven't seen Disturbia -- I keep meaning too since my students tell me it is very similar to Rear Window (I always do a big film analysis unit with my 8th graders using Alfred Hitchcock movies).

I hope you get to see it soon, too! :goodvibes
It is like Rear Window, very much so just more modern. I also liked it because it just seemed like it could happen, it was so far fetched of a thriller movie.

Can I just say that I wish I had you as a teacher!!!! :thumbsup2

You show Indiana Jones when you get done with your holy grail unit, and now you say you use Alfred Hitchcock movies for film analysis...when did teachers get so cool????:worship: :worship:

I will definitely need to make more of an effort to watch it.

Awwww! :goodvibes

I have a lot of fun in my literature classes. I am a big one about incorporating films because they are such a wonderful example of modern storytelling. Man used to sit around the fire telling stories, now we watch films. With my Hitchcock unit (which follows the Poe unit in October), we learn how to "read" a film like we read a story -- we look at plot, characters, setting, mood, etc. and how filmmakers use music, camera angles, lighting -- Hitchcock was such an innovator in the field that his films work nicely in illustrating all these things. Besides, I really like his stuff.

Also, I am a big one about making connections -- so often people don't realize that is what they do when they read or watch something -- connect it to something they have watched or read before, something that happened in the world, something that happened to them. That's why we like certain books/films more than others -- we connect with them on some level.

Sorry, you can take the teacher out of the classroom, but...;)

Like Fountas and Pinnell's (we call them F&P)Text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections! You can take a teacher out of the classrom, but you definatley cannot take the classroom out of the teacher! :):teacher:

Psst- Have you seen what Disneyland is getting/got in celebration of the new Indiana Jones movie, to quote from the DIS disneyland section in the info website, "Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Stone Tiger

This show will involve guests in finding clues and figuring out codes which lead to an appearance by Indiana Jones. It will be performed several times a day. (Check the daily park schedule.) Aladdin's Oasis is the site for this show.

Other fun Indy events include:

* Appearances by Indiana Jones

Park visitors can get a collectible map and use it to explore Adventureland in search of clues leading to a code which will allow access to special Indiana Jones online digital content

Photo ops in Adventureland using props from the Indiana Jones movies

Jungle Cruise will have some Indiana Jones elements "

I know what you mean about Charles not watching the trailers, and to his defense, sometimes after the movie is released, they get really ridiculous. You can pratically see all the major plot points! I love the newness of seeing a film for the first time.:thumbsup2

And that's so cool that you teach your kids how to make those kind of connections. I'm serious, I wish I'd had a teacher like you although I always thought my English/lit teachers were so cool. I'm sure they were, but it didn't help that it was my favorite subject! :lmao:

Yes! Can you tell that I am a reading major? Fountas and Pinnell were held up as the Supreme Gurus of Reading Knowledge -- obviously I still think that!

Sigh, what I wouldn't give to go to Disneyland this summer! Why, oh why, can't they do that at WDW, too? It's so unfair!

It is so true that trailers can give away so much!

Thanks! Literature (followed closely by history) was always my favorite subject, too! ;)

Me too! :goodvibes

I could not stand math and science, although I had several lovely teachers in both subjects.

Funny how life turns out, huh?

Hate math = part-time bank teller :lmao:

I have always said that math is my nemesis. Thank goodness for calculators!

That's what we call irony! :lmao:

Amen, sister!

Don't I know it...although I do have to say, working at a bank has made me so much more financially savvy than I ever was before. I have so much of a better concept of what to do with our money, so if this job has taught me anything (it's taught me a lot, but we'll run with it), that's it. :thumbsup2

Hey Jackie!!! Happy Memorial day!! Can you believe how close we are getting?!?!? I am TOO excited, but fear that I will run out of time to get everything done!!!! WE CAN DO IT!!!! Right?

Tom and I headed to one of the Drive-in movie theaters Saturday night to take in Indy!!! We set Megan up on sleeping bags and pillows in the back of our SUV with her portable DVD player and a couple of her movies, so we could enjoy our movie, and she could enjoy hers. We all had a blast--Megan can't wait until she can chill out in the back again and have a "movie party!" BTW--we took in Indy M&Ms of course to enjoy with our popcorn!!! I enjoyed the movie--there were a couple HUH?!?!? moments, but I did like it overall!!! How are things going for you in preparation for the trip?

I just love that Pinnell's name is GaySue...that cracks me up! :rotfl2:

They are the gurus...they just came out with a program that will score the kids' reading abilites...and give you their reading levels...like a DRA...but more aligned with F&P's levels. Reading dorks we are....reading dorks!:lmao:

Happy Memorial Day to you, too, Jen!

We can definitely do it -- I think this is the worst part of waiting -- close enough to be beside myself with excitement, but not quite close enough to start packing everything. I am trying to wait until the 10-day mark to start doing all of that. I did pull the suitcases out today and found myself wishing I had a new suitcase. Must...stay...away...from...lugguage...stores!

What a perfect movie to see at a drive-in!

I had a couple of Huh?!? moments, too, but overall loved it.

Oh, I will have to look into their new program -- thanks for the heads-up! I use several different assessments, but, of course, none of them are aligned to F&P's levels.

One week and 6 days?!?! You're SOOO close!

I'm SOOO jealous!

Okay, here's me being a dork. I have been thinking in terms of days for quite awhile: 15 days, 14 days, 13 days. When I read your comment about a week and six days and noticed my ticker, I was all, "OMG! That is sooooo close!" For some reason saying a week and six days sounds so much closer than 13 days! :lmao:

Don't I know it...although I do have to say, working at a bank has made me so much more financially savvy than I ever was before. See, something good always comes out of everything! ;)

I went to see Indy today! I really liked it.........only one part of the storyline I really didn't like, but I'll save that for later so I don't ruin it for anyone!

Can you believe this is the first Indiana Jones movie I've seen?:rotfl2:

Four days until Disney??? Woo hoo for you!!! :cheer2:

I hope you get to see the movie before you leave -- it will help pass the time while you wait to go on vacation! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the cheer--I did get to see the movie, but unfortunately it *way* cut into my last-minute preparations for the trip. (Largely because the show we wanted to see was sold out, so we ended up driving to another theater. And might I mention the first theater was 40 min away from where I live due to my brother wanting a lay-z boy chair from my parents. Long, and boring, story.)

I thought he was great in the movie -- a very nice fit. A couple of my favorite moments in the movie were more his than Harrison's (go see it so I can tell you what those moments are ). He is developing into an excellent adult actor which, as you know, is always kind of iffy when they start out as kids -- not many can successfully bridge that gap.

I agree, Shia was excellent! Loved the primping. Though I guess Mutt wouldn't call it primping, being a greaser. :rotfl2:

Hey Jackie!! Hope you are enjoying your SUMMER VACATION!!! It is hard to get used to I'm sure though! Hope you got some Disney planning done today--ONLY 10 MORE DAYS FOR US!! YIPPEE!!! Have a great Tuesday!

PM me the part you didn't like -- I am curious to see if it was the part I didn't care for.

So...are you going to watch the other three now??? ::yes::

You must be soooo excited -- you are going tomorrow to WDW!

Glad you were able to see the movie -- I wonder what greasers call primping? Hmmm...

Well, I had to work today and I have a half day tomorrow, then it will be summer vacation. It is always kind of an adjustment to finally realize that I can slow down and relax. WDW will be a nice bridge for that! :rotfl:

Hurray for ten days -- today is 12 for us!
