The Peterson Family WDW Invasion 2009 PTR

Darn that Farmtown! I have been doing well on it but neglecting my PTR readers. I must try to do better! Let's start getting back with a few replies.....

Canyon girl, your time spent way back when at WDW sounds wonderful! :cloud9: Of course, I cannot really speak for just relaxing the way you did in WDW but I do know that I would love to just have that sort of time to just chill at Disneyland... doing nothing... so I can just imagine that WDW would be just about the same.

I see how the dining plan works great for many but I do see how it does reduce a day tripper's ability to just drop in for a bite to eat. I guess that just goes to show how WDW depends more on vacationers than the local population. It has also left me wondering how people who do not plan at all and just decide to take the kids to Disney ever get to dine in any of the places that are so difficult to get ADRs for in advance. I guess only by shear accident. My 90 days is coming up fast and I am a bit nervous... wondering if I am going to be able to get into any of the places I really want. Good luck staying up late for those ressies! :thumbsup2

At least having been to WDW before you will have some idea of what to expect, even traveling on short notice. Since this is our first trip I am just planning to be amazed! Our time too will mostly be spent in MK and we also plan to do CP but I will try to tell more about that later. MVMCP just sounds too crowded for my bunch. Plus we are not usually late park goers. I am seriously doing a Pirate & Pals Voyage and heading over to the Hoop-De-doo. That should be enough special events to keep us entertained!

After I read your post I had the bright idea that I might just go ahead and add CRT on our last day. Still thinking... but I don't know if I can bring myself to pay $50 per person for breakfast. :scared1: (I am not a big breakfast person.) I know, I know it comes with pics and extras but still! Maybe I can just hope for a menu change that I like better in the next few months to help convince me.

As a matter of fact we ARE homeschoolers! I do have to say since we school year round that this trip will be purely for fun. If they happen to learn something that will be great but we will not be seeking out any educational opportunities. I guess after 12 years of HSing I am ready for a total break! Anyway, off season is definitely the only way to go. It is so nice to have that option. We just got back a few weeks ago from a quick weekend trip to Corpus Christi. First time we have been during the summer crowd in I can't remember how long. Never again! I feel for people whose only option is to travel while everyone else does. It was just crazy! We have been to DL in September, October, November and December but never during summer.

MadilynnsMomma, I have actually had 2 Canons. My first was one of the big old clunkers before they came up with the nice pocket sizes. My second was a good camera and a good deal less bulky but I guess I wore it out because the auto focus conked out on me. I figured it would probably cost almost as much to have it fixed as to buy a new one so I made up my mind to purchase yet another camera. I was rather ticked off at Canon at that time so I got a Panasonic last year. I love the camera but the pics just did not seem quite as sharp as the old Canon so.... here I am again with a new camera. Not knowing whether we would ever take more than one trip to WDW was a very good excuse to make sure I had a good camera! I decided to go with Canon again and just hope that the last one that broke was just a dud. So far I like the new Canon although I have not decided if it's pics will be a stark difference than the Panasonic. Could it be that the user is somewhat lacking in the photo taking dept? Meeeebe. Oh well, professional I may not be but I am darn sure gonna document out trip!

That's too funny - I had heard great things about the Fuji Finepix so I got it for Christmas (of course I bought it before Christmas so I could take Christmas morning pics) last year. I took a few photos and they just weren't my good ol' Canon pics. SO I returned it and got a new Powershot

MadilynnsMomma, I guess we are just a bunch of camera junkies!

Gotta tell everyone what we did today! I thought it would be fun to start watching some of our Disney movies as our WDW trip gets closer. Today's movie was "Song of the South". I actually saw it in a theater when I was a little girl. I am now so ready to hop on Splash!

Okay... let's see what else I can come up with to get this PTR rolling again. Where did I leave off, oh yeah getting all my preperations in order. Okay, so in comparison to airline tickets, park tickets, car rentals and lodging deposits my latest purchase of the camera was fairly minor. Just gotta wonder
scratch-1.gif
how many other "minor expenditures" will be required between now and our trip in December. My guys are so low maintenance if I buy them new underwear they will be satisfied! DD and I are a different story.
So far, here's a few things just off the top of my head....

So far DD seems to be in the lead. She is just too fun to buy for! Here is what I have come up with for her:
  • A Poodle backpack. If you have seen any of my photos from last year just about every time we headed to the park she had a stuffed animal with her. Most often it was tucked in the front of her jacket or I would have to carry it. I found this little guy and thought he would be perfect to play with in line plus he will hold a few other small toys to help keep her entertained. Pretty cute isn't he?

  • An Autograph and Sticker Book. This looked like a unique and fun way to gather a few autographs plus keep up with the passport stamps. Collecting stickers was something we had never done so it was an added bonus. The book really looks like a lot of fun. However, now they sent me an ad for the Guide to the Magic for Kids which has room for autographs, passport stamps and stickers but even has a guide book and activities. Since DD has decided she now loves to read I think she would really enjoy having a book of her own where she could read all about the parks for herself. Hmmm... why do they do this to me?!
    confusedsmiley-1.gif
  • Crocs. I ran across an amazing deal on Crocs back in June so I also got DD 3 new pair for a total of $14.97 including shipping . (I just noticed they have some new styles out! Mackenzie for the girls is really cute.)

  • A swimsuit. I found her a really cute Princess Aurora one and matching flip flops while they had them on sale at Disneyshopping since we are going to have our own pool.

  • Pal Mickey. Had to have one when I heard about him! Found one on ebay so he is currently stashed in my closet, among the ever growing pile to take to the world. I am not sure if I bought him for DD or really for myself. I imagine after she totes him around a day or so he will be mine when she gets tired of carrying him. Anyone ever used him? I hope he is really fun and not a dissapointment!

So far for me:

  • A swimsuit. I usually don't venture into pools but since we will have our own private pool I am gonna give it a go. DD is gonna want to spend any free waking moment she has in the pool so no doubt I will be the designated lifeguard. Luckily, I will only be sending my family members into a state of shock when they see me.

  • A tan suede waist bag. I detest having to carry anything with me! If I can get by I am going to try to just stuff the few items I need in my cargo pockets but I bought this... thinking I should have a backup plan.

  • 2 red shirts that I liked so I bought them while they were on sale. Out of habit I have always packed clothes that will result in the fewest loads of laundry. I doubt there is anyone else on the planet who plans their travel wardrobe this way. This year we will have our own washer and dryer so I really won't have to worry about it but it has always worked so well I'm not going to bother changing it. I always wear khaki or black pants. DH wears khaki pants, black tees and green long sleeve shirts. DS wears jeans and black tees. DD usually wears lots of pink, red or pastel colors. So I get to group my clothes in red/pink, darks, light colors and whites and usually only end up with one load per each color group once in the middle of our trip.

I don't guess that's too much considering that I have been planning on this trip for 6 months.

Just checking in to let you know that I'm still reading along. I really hate being in this holding pattern where I've got nothing to do with my plans. August 31st is my 90 day so I atleast get to make a couple of ADRs that day.

Oh boy, Pikester! That's next Sunday! Have you got everything picked out yet that you want to make ADRs for? I suppose if you are not doing the 90+10 you must be staying offsite too. Where will you be staying?

Not staying off site, we will be at Pop. It is my understanding that when you stay on site you are allowed to make your ADRs at 90 days plus upto ten days of your stay. Example: My 90 day is August 31 but because I am staying on property I am allowed to make any and all of my ADRs on that one day during that one phone call (but only upto 10days. I guess if you stay longer then 10 you have to call back at the 11th days 90 day mark).

If you stay off property then you can make your ADRs at the 90 day mark but you have to call back for each days ADRs. Example: If I was staying off property and lets say my 90 day is August 31 for my first day at Disney being Nov 29 then I could make ADRs for that day. Now I will have to call back on Sept 1 to make my ADRs for Nov 30 and then back again on Sept 2nd for my Dec 1 ADRs and so on and so on.

That is my understanding of that. I could be so wrong so I may do some more research to be sure. I've always followed the above info and I've gotten all the ressies that I wanted.

I am so humiliated! I do know all that about 90+10! :headache: Can I blame it on a blonde moment or a senior moment? :confused3 Anyway, it was a sneaky way to get you to tell me where you were staying! Don't you grab up all the good ADRs. I am going to be one of "them" who have to call back everyday. Of course, if I use the online ressies it will be much more convenient so I will probably give that route a try. Gonna cross my fingers that we all get the ADRs we want!

Don't worry about it! :goodvibes

Yup, we are staying at Pop Century. I'd say it was our favorite resort but it's the only place we have ever stayed so I have nothing to compare it to.

There will be plenty of ADRs for you. I only plan on booking two; the Hoop Dee Doo and the Character breakfast at Tusker House. We are getting the Free Dining Quick Service Plan and we will be paying-out-of-pocket for the two ADRs.

I plan on calling since as of right now I supposedly can't do the 90+10 online. I've read that some have been able to while others have not. I plan on saving myself the headache and just giving them a call.

I would say as long as you are happy staying at Pop then you are making an excellent choice. It does look like a fun resort.
Which day are you going to do the Hoop-de-do? I've got it penciled in for us either the 4th or 5th but that could change at any minute. Need to do the last minute fine tuning this week before it gets time for me to call.

I have to get on the trip shopping! I am slacking and you know what??!! It'll be here fairly quickly! Oh, and yay for the double digits! :cool1:

Oh yes, LOVEMY3KIDDOS! It will be here very fast. You quit that slacking and get out there and SHOP!
My DH likes to say when it gets under 100 days I better start hauling out the suitcases. I don't know that I am quite ready for that but I do start thinking about just what clothing everyone will need. Most of us don't need much but my DD won't stop getting taller so she gets a new wardrobe every year. Lucky her!

I have been seriously pondering the last few days over the upcoming ADRs and what extra activities we will be doing. So far I have reworked our itinerary over 4 times and will probably have to do it again when the December calendar comes out.

Here's the plan TODAY.

Wed/Dec 2- Arrival day, pickup groceries, swim, meet up with DS's friends

Thurs/Dec 3- MK-Crystal Palace lunch

Fri/Dec 4- DS-Prime Time Café lunch & Sci Fi Dine In for shake/dessert

Sat/Dec 5- EP, San Angel Inn lunch, Candlelight Processional w/Garden Grill or Teppan Edo, Illuminations

Sun/Dec 6- MK- Columbia Harbor House lunch (TL)

Mon/Dec 7- AK, Rainforest Café lunch, Hoop-De-Doo 7:00

Tues/Dec 8- MK- Liberty Tree Tavern (TL)

Wed/Dec 9- MK- Cosmic Ray's lunch(TL), Spectro (7-8)

Thurs/Dec 10- No park day, Bubba Gump lunch, Titanic Exhibit, bowling, beach

Fri/Dec 11- MK- Tony's lunch

Sat/Dec 12- AK/HS/EP, Whispering Canyon Cafe dinner, Pirate & Pals Fireworks Voyage

Sun/Dec 13- MK- TMLT Noodle Station (TL)or Pecos Bill (TL)

Mon/Dec 14- EP-Coral Reef lunch

Tues/Dec 15- MK-CRT dinner

Wed/Dec 16- Return home
(All the (TL)s are DS's chance to eat a turkey leg from somewhere nearby. That was his one request for the trip. Plenty of turkey legs!)

My brain is about to explode trying to decide if I should doing EVERYTHING in case we never make it back or if I should only do the total absolutes and save a few dollars. The above plans shows the everything list. If I went the other route I would probably leave off San Angel Inn, Whispering Canyon Cafe and CRT. I want to see the volcano at SAI and eat in the castle but honestly the food at both places does not seem all that appealing. As for WCC, I think my bunch would enjoy the antics but it seems like a lot of trouble to take a boat just to eat. Also, I would have better luck trying to work it in for lunch because we don't usually eat dinner in the park but I have heard there is just not much going on for lunch. So.... will I have vacationer's regret if I don't do it all? Or will I not miss anything if I skip those three? Anybody out there have any input for me?

subbing! hey there- fellow texan here- we are in plano and work in dallas.

we are there dec 10-20 at the wilderness lodge, the first deluxe stay for most of our family (14 of us!). i started a PTR as well - see link below.

Hey Pikester,
I'll be right there with you Monday morning! At least, you are on the same time zone. I'm pulling an all nighter so that I will be as coherent as possible. I am so not a morning person. Good luck! I'm hoping that things will not be as bad for us as the current FD. I've been reading some really bad things. Have you read the thread on about why should we make ADRs? Kind of scary!!! I don't think that I could wait 1 1/2 hours for a table with an ADR! Hopefully, it will not be as crowded as it is now!

Marie,
Good luck with your ADRs, too. I hope you are able to get all that you want!

I'm happy that I only have to make 2 ADRs this time around. The very first time we went to Disney back in 2006 we did not make ADRs until 2 weeks before we went:scared1:! I didn't know anything (Ok, I knew a little but it wasn't until we got closer to our trip that I got really worried) about ADRs and DH thought we could just eat where ever, when ever. It wasn't until I found the DIS and really started reading it that I discovered about the ADRs. Then, when I called, none of the ADRs I wanted were availabe. I got so upset that I told DH he could do it(See I blamed him because I had been nagging him about making ADRs but he said we wouldn't need them). He looked through some menus and made a list of places for each day we were going to be there that he thought we would like. Then he called and went down the list with a CM until there was availability. Thank goodness we had Park Hopper because we were all over the place.

Hello there exwdwcm! Well, we are practically neighbors! We have a few friends over in the Dallas area but we do try to stay out of the big city as much as possible. The traffic is crazy over there!

I have a feeling if I were to stay onsite I would also choose the WL. Maybe someday but for now the house was the best option for us. I bet you and your bunch of 14 are going to have a blast! First chance I get I will pop over and read up on your PTR. I did glance and I do want to say right off that I think it is amazing for you to be able to share your vacation with your family. My DH and I both have very little family, as in no parents anymore. What I wouldn't give to be able to take both our mothers with us to WDW!

I guess great minds think alike if we are choosing a lot of the same meals. In reality my choices were made more or less because they were "safe"... in other words too many picky eaters to try anything much out of the realm of "meat and taters". We are not very adventurous when it comes to food. How about you?

I ended up getting the Canon Powershot sd880 is. It is now a discontinued model so I had to search high and low to find one. I found it on ebay. There are tons of great places online to get some reviews on cameras. One of my favorite sites was imaging resource. They have some great tools on their website to help you narrow down what camera will work best for you as well as compare models and prices. Good luck finding just what you need!

Canyon girl, I am afraid I am not going to be quite as dedicated as you are. No all nighter for me! I hope I don't regret it but I am going to take my chances and sleep some and hope that I can get in early enough to get some ADRs somewhere around the time I hope for. We are pretty versatile and I have enough days I can rearrange if absolutely necessary. I am with you in hoping that early December is a little bit slower. Worst comes to worst we will just eat CS and save a little money.

Pikester, wow only 2 ADRs! You really have things narrowed down. Good for you! I am trying to squeeze in everything! Still, I did leave off a few that I here folks raving about just because I did not find anything appealing on their menu. If I had to count on my DH we would just have to do without!

Okay, so I have been working on my itinerary AGAIN! I think I finally have the last draft unless something is drastically out of place when the December calendar comes out or I can't get HDDR, CP or PPV on the nights I want. So this is it folks:

Wed/Dec 2- Arrival day, pickup groceries, swim, meet up with DS's friends

Thurs/Dec 3- MK- Liberty Tree Tavern lunch (TL)

Fri/Dec 4- DS-Prime Time Café lunch & Sci-Fi Dine In for shake/dessert

Sat/Dec 5- EP, 8:15 Candlelight Processional dinner 6:00@ Garden Grill, Rose & Crown or Teppan Edo, followed by Illuminations

Sun/Dec 6- MK- Cosmic Ray's lunch (TL)

Mon/Dec 7- AK, Rainforest Café dinner

Tues/Dec 8- MK- Crystal Palace lunch

Wed/Dec 9- MK- Columbia Harbor House lunch (TL), Spectro

Thurs/Dec 10- No park day, Bubba Gump lunch, Titanic Exhibit, bowling, beach

Fri/Dec 11- MK-- Tony's lunch

Sat/Dec 12- AK/HS/EP, Pirate & Pals Fireworks Voyage

Sun/Dec 13- MK- TMLT Noodle Station lunch (TL) or Pecos Bill lunch

Mon/Dec 14- EP-Coral Reef lunch

Tues/Dec 15- MK- Hoop-De-Doo dinner 7:00

Wed/Dec 16- Return home

Your plans look great! I personally don't think you are missing anything by not eating at San Angel... we di not like it at all. Plus, you can still go in there without eating there.
