The Original Cricut machine is advertised this week at only $99.99. I have been tempted for a while. Do I go for it?

Does anyone know what size paper it cuts up to? Can you cut smaller pieces of paper?

Any help is appreciated...I am strongly considering it as the lowest price I have ever noticed a cricut on sale for is 200 bucks.

TIA!

I have had the original cricut for about 3 years now and I absolutely love it. It will cut paper up to 6 inches wide and 12 inches long. The only thing I would say is to carefully consider what you would use it for in order to make the best buying decision on which model would be best for you. That is definitely a great price but if the original model wouldn't meet your needs then I would say hold off rather than buying something that you are only moderately happy with and then have to upgrade in the future. Does that make sense?

The smallest that the original cricut will cut is 1 inch whereas the cricut create and cricut expression cut as small as 1/4 inch. So depending on your needs that might be a deciding factor. The largest that the original cricut will cut is 5 1/2 inches.

Hope this helps and if you have any other questions I can help with feel free to ask!

$99 is a great price ... I paid $150 for mine a little over 2 years ago and back then that was a decent price. Today I moved up to an E. As Kathryn said .. compare it with the other machines and go from there. I bought the E today because I have cartridges that cut cards and boxes that I could really use the bigger machine for. I've also heard that the E is a better machine for the Disney carts.

Reply from a Cricut newbie:

I went for it -- spent more on cartrdges and supplies than the machine, and am already addicted! Doing the Disney characters is tedious and kind of hard (some really tiny pieces), but also fun. Will be hard to resist upgrading to the bigger Expressions -- altho I just do scrapbooking, and the original one is fine for that. Generally you feed it with 6 x 12" paper (half of a regular sheet), but can use smaller scraps, if you're cutting something small. You can put a small scrap of paper in the top right corner to cut something small (like Minnie's dress) -- don't bother with the instructions that describe how to use smaller paper (unless you want to max out part of an 8 1/2 X 11 or something). But be sure it is big enough for what you are cutting. It hasn't taken me much time at all to figure out how the sizes seem to work (one-inch setting for borders -- but then you have to set them in place -- it takes 4 for an 8x8 page, using this machine -- I think the big one will run them together for you).

Someone at ACM said she uses a Xyron for gluing tle pieces, and I hadn't used that yet either -- but I picked one up at Walmart for $20.00 and it is GREAT!. Altho for the really little pieces (like eyes) a dab of glue on something else and using a pin or toothpick to apply it may be better. I kind of tip the Xyron away from me and set things down in it with tweezers to get them inserted and use the glue sheet better (if they're little).

So, anyway, it takes some space and the upkeep for supplies/cartridges you want may be too much, but it's fun.

I just got one yesterday, from the same sale, and am soooo excited!! I've been wanting one for a while, but never quite enough to spend the $299 regular price.

If it's not hijacking too much, does anyone have a favorite cartridge that you just use ALL the time? - It came with the George font/basic shapes.

Paper Doll Dress Up. Best.Cartridge.Ever. If you are on a strict budget and can really only buy one cartridge for now, that is the one to get. It has the paper doll people, plus TONS of other "accessories" that match nearly any theme you may need. I definitely use this cartridge most.

ITA! I love this cartridge. I'm a teacher, and I use it at school and for scrapbooking. I think I will get the new one when it comes out.

I have my credential and actually initially bought my Cricut more for use in the classroom than scrapbooking. I've ended up using it for SO much stuff. I'm also strongly considering getting the new Paper Doll Dress Up. Do you know if any pictures have been released other than the front of the box?

I like the Mickey Font as a good basic font. I use it all the time! Paper Dolls in a great choice, too. Oh yeah, and Doodlecharms! ;)

I love my cricut! I love all the fonts that are available and that you can make them what size you want. I've used them for cards, projects for work, gifts, there's A LOT you can do with it!
