I checked hotels.com for Hilo and found some nice boutique hotels. I also found some big cheap hotels with two double beds in the room. Who knows how accessible the boutique hotels would be. I need more extensive research, not on a cell phone!

We decided we need a split stay, starting in Kona (short drive from the airport, and a chance to relax from the flight). We can snorkel, provided her leg is healed. Then go to Hilo and see the volcanoes, botanical gardens, museums and the like. Then we can go to Aulani.

Alison - Are you snorkelling near coral reefs? You know that the coral is sharp and it does cut the skin easily.

Good idea on the split stay. I was going to check redweek.com and see about a timeshare rental.

It's not so much whether or not she cuts herself, it's more that the chronic wounds need to heal. I don't think there I coral on the Kona coast. There hasn't been enough time for sand to form around most of the island as the tough volcanic rock is still young. However that rock can certainly cut just as much as coral.

I was just concerned that even if the wound heals over she might accidently get cut again.

She's had plenty of cuts open and close on her leg in the past year. It just these pesky ones that cause worry. As long as they scab up with 24-36 hours there is no concern.
