Does anyone else miss the old tiki room? it was so much better than the new one.

I miss the original Tiki Room a lot. The new one isn't very good IMO and you only hear a few lines of the orginal song at the beginning and that's it.

:welcome: to the DISboards Dis93 and R2-JD!

I can't stand the new Tiki Room. I really wish they'd bring the old one back -- the new one is SO annoying and doesn't even make much sense. I miss the old songs and it seemed like the flowers and totem poles used to sing a lot more, and I loved the song the "fancy" birds in the middle sang. Now it's just crappy. I think DL still has the old one, I'm almost tempted to make a trip to California just to be able to see it one more time!

The new Tiki Room gives me a headache just thinking about it! Luckily the beautifully refurbed old version is still packing them in at DL.

I can't stand the new Tiki Room ...but then again I couldn't stand the old Tiki Room either. To each their own.

I loved the old Tiki room, the new one just doesn't do anything for me.

Well, sadly, not so much.
And, certainly, that was NOT the case at WDW before-

The original Enchanted Tiki Room was the very first AudioAnimatronics attraction ever built.

Walt Disney himself had earlier designed and crafted a small mechanical dancing man puppet theater, but it was too complex to build full-scale.

So, Walt and his Imagineeers came up with the idea of building mechanical BIRDS as they are simpler to design and operate.
Mechanical birds had been built for many generations by European and Asian craftsmen with "clock-work" mechanisms, but the new AudioAnimatronic Disney design was truly "cutting-edge technology" at that time (early 1960's).

Disney's staff wrote a whole musical show around their new bird designs, and the Tiki Room presentation was born.

They set it all up in one of the Disney (movie) Studios and (after adding a lot of additional special effects that rounded-out simple bird-stars) they built the final showcase for the attraction at Disneyland, set everything up inside it and the show debuted in 1963 (wow!)
The Enchanted Tiki Room was a HUGE success with guests for many years.
And, naturally, when WDW's MK was built, another Tiki Room was included in the plans.

But, as with anything based on "cutting-edge technology"... the Tiki Room was soon upstaged by newer, more complex and amazing animatronic attractions.
The songs chosen for the show were becoming too out-dated ("Let's All Sing Like the Birdies Sing", even in 1963, was not exactly the "pop anthem of a new generation").

The simple ideas of "birds twittering" and audience "sing-along" songs became "quaint" and SLOW as audiences became more accustomed to bigger "thrills" at other newer attractions.

The Tiki Room inhabitants were playing to fewer and fewer folks in the seats below.
And many times I was witness to a "mass exodus" of folks just getting up mid-show and finding the exit.

So the Imagineers decided it might help matters to "update" the show by adding "name" characters (from recent films) and by making music choices that had an appeal to the audiences that were currently Disney's guests.

And I personally applaud this "new" version of the show.
The writers clearly had a love and respect for the original version (as there many references to it, and actual RECORDINGS from the original still included.)

I will also say that since the new "Under New Management" show began, I have seen far fewer guests get up and "walk out" during the show than I had been seeing for many years prior to the update.

There are some who don't like the new version of the show and want it restored to the original version.
And I do think that old show was like a "peek into the past" (with Walt and his crew), but I think the way it was headed... playing to fewer and fewer guests... it would simply have been REMOVED... and that would have been a far worse crime, IMHO.

"Let's all sing like the birdie sings.....Tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet!"

The Musical Luau was nice also.

It was a good show, but I do like the new version too. It took a while for the new version to grow on me, though.

DITTO jeffbear! I didn't know that people actually LIKED the old Tiki Room. I just remember that horrible song..."in the tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room..."

:crazy2: AAAAHHHHHHHHH!

And yet, Tom Fitzgerald (Executive Vice President, Senior Creative Executive, for Walt Disney Imagineering) said:

"We have found that in the theme parks, guests want the classics like Pirates and 'small world' but expect and demand something new. We have to be careful of messing with classics. An example of failure was the Tiki Room Under New Management. It was a failure because of the attitude. It doesn’t match being part of the Happiest Place on Earth and guests instantly responded to that fact."

yes, we miss the old tiki tiki tiki tiki room.....

have never really enjoyed the new version with iago.

Didnt like it then or now but still go on every trip to appease DH...the things we do for the ones we love

If they would just let the birds finish singing "In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room" song at the begining, and then start the new stuff, I think the show would be much better.

Really well said! And even though I always loved the original , I am glad that now my kids can enjoy this version with new characters that they know and love. BTW when I was a child it was soo hard to get any of the adult's to take me to see the tiki birds! It took all the eyelash batting I could muster. Im just glad they saved it. It would cease to be WDW to me if they didnt keep some of the original attractions.
