I think everyone deserves a thorough explanation of what happend.
Computers on the internet don't talk by using names, like www.disboards.com. That get's translated into a number. For example www.disboards.com really equals 198.64.133.85.
When you type www.disboards.com into your browser your computer does goes out to a special server which is run by YOUR ISP called a DNS server.
This server goes out onto the internet to special servers called "root servers". There are 8 of these located all over the world. They have a conversation something like "excuse me can you tell me who would have the address for www.disboards.com". They answer sure that would be "www.gtld1-verisign-grs.com". Verisign is an outside company that we use to handle our DNS. They are part of Network Solutions and are supposed to be the biggest and most reliable DNS service there is.
Your server then goes to that server and gets the address.
What happend here is that verisign decided to switch servers. They had thought they sent emails to everyone letting them know but they have since determined that they messed up and the emails did not go out.
The reason this takes so long to fix is because of caching. All of the servers along the way "cache" or save the addresses. This is to cut down on internet traffic and because the root servers could not handle the load otherwise. Unfortunately that means that problems take a LONG time to fix. Your ISP's server believes it has the right address and doesn't check it for a period of time. I can be as much as 48 hours.
Hopefully this isn't written in "techspeak" and i will be glad to answer any questions!

hookairs? :p

(if we're in, we really don't care why we're in, Alex! :p )

Just kidding! I'm sure someone, somewhere, will find this information very useful....... :teeth:

So in effect, our parents moved without telling us?

lol Serena. Nice translation.

Thanks Alex. Nice job keeping the tech speak to a minimum!

Alex, I thought you were the king of the short & sweet explanations.......yawn.....just tell us, it didn't work, we fixed it. :)

I still don't understand but then I don't get much on the computer! I am in thanks to Dan but I can't get to any of the other boards....

I actually did understand that and it was very well put!

It's happened to us before as well. (don't you just hate when that happens?)

I, too, was able to get back here with Dan's help!

Question Alex: when it's offically "fixed"...will we need to do anything, or will my www.disboards.com just work again?

LOL!

As long as I can get there, I'll be happy :)

And it's interesting to note (at least for me) - disboards.com DOES work, but www.disboards.com does NOT. Since I followed Alex's explanation with knowledge of my own (and a glassy eyed look), I know that the two are very different in the DNS Server.

So instead of remembering that big huge long number, you can also use disboards.com (or at least for this boo boo)...

......did you see the route server's new logo?

Hello,
Is dreamsunlimited travel having this same problem, b/c I cant access their site either. I was a little freaked out since I just made a payment yesterday  ! I also cant access wdwinfo.com, just the boards, but that is an improvement from yesterday!
Thank for the info!

but why can some of us access all the boards but the resorts board? disboards.com gets me to the forums. From there I can go everywhere but that particular board. Just seems kinda weird to me.
