The Official "Thanksgiving at Fort Wilderness 2009" Thread

I know there are some major events coming up in October at the Fort for folks (the GG, Halloween) but now that we are in the month of October I think we can start the official "Thanksgiving at the Fort" thread which is only NEXT month!

We plan to be there for a week (Saturday-to-Saturday) and have reserved a Partial site so that means we'll be in 1500 or 2000. I'll have my Dis yard sign out so if you see it please stop in and say hello. We'll also be conspicuous for our Alabama Crimson Tide stuff we'll have out. I've already got a golf cart reserved from Kenny at Tee Time (this will be a first). Actually we're doing this trip with extended family as a GG of our own but the non-campers will be over at Pop Century.

I'm planning to bring a table top roaster oven to cook my turkey in (we're actually going to cook it on Friday but more on that later) and wanted to know from any Thanksgiving Fort veterans which of the grocery stores nearby might sell a fresh, non-frozen turkey? I cooked a frozen turkey in the roaster and it had so much basting juice added to it the poor bird was almost swimming in it by the end of the roast.

So who else will be there? What are your dates? Let's get this ball rolling!

You know we're in. This will be our 6th Thanksgiving Weekend. BTW, we get in early Friday morning.

If all goes well, we will be arriving on Thanksgiving Day for 9 nights. We typically stay on 500 loop...but not sure this time. I'll put my green Mickey sign in the front window of the MH.

Being that we arrive on Thanksgiving Day, we will be eating out this year. But I DO enjoy cooking turkey at the site and walking around the loop taking in all the smells. It's my favorite time of year at the Fort!

This Thanksgiving will be our first visit to FW since 2000 Thanksgiving, so we are really looking forward to this trip. We'll have our new Cameo 5th wheel, pretty much the whole family, plenty of food and adult beverages and the dog. It can't get any better than that. Oh yeah, I have the golf cart reserved through Kenny @ Tee Time (thanks everyone here for the great thread). He's great to work with.

Jeanne- Congratulations on coming out of lurkdom! Welcome to the Disboards.

Your avatar says you are from Annapolis! I love that town. My kid brother graduated from the USNA! The poor guy is a career Navy officer, presently stationed in Italy (someone has to do it).

The TCD gang plans to be at the Fort for part of Thanksgiving week, and perhaps will be there the entire week. We have to be in Gainesville for an important function on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so we are trying to figure out the logistics.

So, Ed, Dave, and Donnie, and all the rest, I hope to see you there!

RE: the turkey....

I learned the hard way that turkey's labeled as "fresh" can be legally partially frozen and still called "fresh".

My very first Thanksgiving for 20 - early in the morning I took the "fresh" turkey bought on Tuesday out of the fridge to cook and as I reached inside the cavity for "the goods" I realized the darn thing was frozen... Called my Mom in a panic (Mom's know everything) and she informed me that yes, it can still be partially frozen yet labeled "fresh".

Just thought I'd share that useless tidbit. I would think the Publix butcher would have fresh turkeys....make sure its not the "self-basting" kind which is probably what happened to you...

I don't want to cook for Thanksgiving. I was thinking of Liberty Tree - think it's too late for a ressie? I haven't made any ressies for that particular day cause I couldn't decide what to do....

I'll be driving the afternoon, evening, of the Friday after Thanksgiving. So I'll get in late Friday night, and be setting up and listening/watching football on Saturday. I'll be in a partial and will be there through the 14th of December.

Wow, lots of Kenny golf cart reservations!! I guess I need to give him a call and get one for my trip. (The only bad part is he charges your CC when you reserve.) Have to decide if I want the charge on this month or next month billing cycle.

I have resevations for Fri 11/27 thru Mon 11/30 but have to break the trip up by going over to St. Pete for a party on Sat., I have been debating if I am going to cancel, but just found out I will not have to take Fri as a vacation day, now I want to add Thursday and have Thanksgiving at the Fort.
We also have reservations on Dec 11th thry 13th for my DH birthday. and then for New Years this additiction is getting expensive.

We will be checking in Thanksgiving day! Some friends are flying in from Ohio to stay with us and other friends will already be there. Hubby says I can roast a turkey in the crockpot on the way down so we will see how that goes Would like to have a decent Thanksgiving dinner with friends! Hope we can meet some of you. Our disboards sign says Dirtslinger and we should be in a premium loop.

Although we won't be there this year, my family and I will be arriving at the Fort next year the day after Thanksgiving. I'm so excited and just had to let everyone know about it. It'll be our first trip to the Fort, so that in itself is pretty exciting!

Got a question though. I want a disboard sign to display outside of our fifth wheel. Where are you guys getting these, or are they homemade?

I am a half lurker still, after few years,

We will be there Fri before to Sat after.
3rd or 4th time at Thanksgiving. It is so nice.
We are doing the "thanksgiving at the fort dinner'

Thanks for the welcome everybody! This trip is really getting fun to plan. We have a few family flying in, some riding w/ us and others staying at another Disney property. They better all not come to dinner at once!
I think we're in the 800 loop. Need a pet loop and I think that's what we requested a long time ago. We'll see when the time comes.

TCD: Annapolis is a neat place to live - pricey, but where isn't?

Actually I reserved it a few weeks back, and he is calling me 2 wks before our trip to get our CC info and charge. He said it absolutely has to be paid for at the latest, 2 wks ahead. Also, he said he will be completely booked for Thanksgiving, so you might want to call ASAP.
