The *official* Ipod help thread

My hp has lasted pretty good, I just need a new battery for it. I've had nothing but bad luck with dell, we always get someone who can't speak english or they try and screw us over. They literally crashed my old desktop.

Heh... that's funny, because I always get US Techs from Dell, but from HP it's always been overseas.

Does anyone know how to change the person's name on an Ipod Nano? I registered my daughter's Ipod that she got for Christmas with my name and now says it's my Ipod on the Ipod screen (which doesn't make her very happy).
Thanks

Connect the ipod to the computer.

Double-click directly on its name in the Source list (on the left of the iTunes window). The name part highlights itself. All you have to do is type in a new name and hit enter.

I recommend "Cool-Beans," but use DD's name if you must. (She might like "Cool-Beans"! You should ask her!) :cutie:

Thanks Cool-Beans. I'll try it when I get home tonight. (And I'll ask DD if she wants it to say Cool-Bean's Ipod; she may like it.)

I have an ipod/itunes question if someone could PLEASE help me out...

How do I take songs OFF the ipod and put them in itunes? They were in itunes originally, but my hard drive unexpectedly melted so I had to reinstall itunes when it was replaced. Now I want to switch some songs out and can't figure out how to get them off the ipod without deleting them completely.

Hope that made sense. I don't have my ipod here or itunes on my work computer.

There ya go!

Okay, I have an itunes question (I'm trying to put songs on my ipod). Someone gave me a gift card for free songs on itunes. when I tried to purchase a song tonight, it immediately gives me the pop up note that says: "Are you sure you want to buy this song? Your credit card will be immediately charged and the song will download." So where the heck do I enter the gift card info? Arrgghh!

Go to the iTunes Store home (you can click on the little picture of the house under the volume adjuster on the top.

In the iTunes STORE box on the left, click on music.

When that page comes up look in the "QUICK LINKS" box over on the right for the word "Redeem." Click on redeem and a box comes up where you can enter your pre-paid card number (the number under that stuff you scratch off.)

Good luck!

Ah! It worked!!! Thank you thank you, you are my itunes hero!!

You might also want to take your credit card # off of your profile. When our store credit ran out (from the itunes card), my son ordered a few additional songs that were then charged to my cc. No big deal, I let him do it, but I don't like my cc# just sitting there waiting to be used. Now my kiddos know they can order songs as long as a store credit is there. Just a thought.

OK, guys, I got a new laptop and only the "purchased" songs were able to be imported from the ipod. Is there a way to move the songs I pulled from my CDs from the old laptop to the new one? I'm not moving everything - want to start fresh without bringing all that crap over.

And should I bother doing it now? Will be upgrading to Vista in a couple weeks and if that will make me lose them again, I'll wait.

I just know nobody is checking this thread anymore and I won't get an answer.

Have you tried Sharepod? I haven't used it yet myself but my understanding is that you can get all your stuff off the ipod, even the stuff you didn't get from itunes.

When I bought my portable computer, I just used my memory stick to get all the songs from my desktop computer to my portable one. It took I think five trips back and forth to get them all, but it worked well enough! You can also network your computers somehow so that you can share files, but I've never figured out how to do that. Maybe someone else here can tell you how! :)

Agreed, Sharepod is the way to go (pretty sure I mentioned it already in this thread).

I started a thread about this, but thought I'd post over here, too. My younger daughter received a nano and wants to add only some of her sister's songs on to her nano. However, when I connect the new nano, it wants to add all the songs in the library from the first nano. How can I add only some of those songs plus some new ones that only my younger daughter wants on to the new nano?

Now we have another problem. The nano that is now mine had 385 songs on it. When we plugged it in something happened and now it has only 126 of the original 385. I did have to download the newest itunes (7.0) before trying to work with the new ipods. Does that have anything to do with it? Why would it erase the songs? All the songs show on the itunes library but they aren't on the nano. What am I doing wrong?

Correction: now the old nano has 0 of the 385 songs and it tells me "mom's Ipod" is updated but there is no music on it. The good news: the new 30gb video has all the songs from itunes (the original nano) on it. YEAH! At least I did one thing right. So, now I need to know:

How to get all the 385 songs back on to the original nano.

How to get some of the 385 on to the new nano plus some new songs.

I think I may have to quit now. I'm so frustrated I can't think.

Thanks,
Melanie

ugadog99/keypooh90 (your other thread says you're the same person), I have to ask the following before I can answer properly:

There are 3 iPods, right? 1 Video and 2 Nanos, right?

If I follow DD1 had a Nano, then she got a Video and now you have her old Nano. DD2 has her own Nano.

How many computers are involved?

How many music libraries are involved?

This is all important in understanding the problem.

We are having logging out and logging on problems, but this is the mom-ugadog99. You have the scenario correct. We have 1 video and 2 nanos. There is one computer and only one library. After I thought I about it last night, I wondered if the problem was that I only have one library? How do you set up more than one library? Of course, some of the songs the younger daughter wants are on the original library but many are not.

Now, just to confuse it even more. I was able to get 182 of the original songs back on the original nano. I dragged and dropped the songs from the library list to the newly named "mom's ipod". But now, I can't drop anymore because it says it's full and doesn't have space. It can't be full because there's only a portion of the original songs on it.

Thank you for your help. I feel like such an idiot.

Melanie

ugadog99, what you need to do is better organize your music library, having multiple libraries is not necessary to do this.

First you'll want to create some folders in iTunes, one for each user. For simplicity, I'll call them "mom" (for yourself), "dd1" (for DD1), and "dd2" (for DD2), but you can call them whatever you like.

To create a new folder you:

1) Start iTunes (iPod not necessary for this step)

2) Choose the File menu (top of iTunes) and then choose New Folder.

This will create a folder under PLAYLISTS named untitled folder, you can just type in the name you want. If the folder isn't automagically selected after being created just keep selecting (usually from not being selected a double select/click is required here) it until it highlights blue instead of black and type the name.

Once all three folders are created, then have each person do the following:

1) Select your folder

2) Choose the File menu (top of iTunes) and then choose New Playlist.

3) Place the songs you'd like into that playlist.

4) Repeat multiple times for as many playlists as you'd like.

At this point each person should have their own folder that contains their own playlists which contains the music that they want to listen to and have on their iPod.

Once this is all set, each person needs to take their own iPod and do the following:

1) Connect your iPod, make sure iTunes is running (if you're doing this all at once it already should be)

2) Wait for the iPod to finish syncing (wait for "iPod update is complete" at the top")

3) Under DEVICES select your iPod

4) Switch to the Music tab

5) Make sure Sync music is selected

6) Select Selected playlists: - this will cause the list of playlists to now be selectable

7) Choose the playlists you want on your iPod (presumably the ones you created earlier)

8) Hit Apply

9) If your iPod doesn't sync after hitting Apply, then right click on it under DEVICES and choose Sync

10) Wait for the message "iPod update is complete" at the top"

11) Right click on your iPod under DEVICES and choose Eject

Once your iPod stops flashing "Do not disconnect." you can safely disconnect your iPod from your computer and pass control to the next person.

Now each iPod shares the library, but each has it's own music. Steps 9 through 11 are very important, pay close attention to them.

Okay, I think I understand. I have one more question (for now anyway) do I need to set the ipods to update manually instead of automatically? If so, I need to do that before I plug in the ipods, correct?
