The Official DIS College Football Thread

UTAH UTES fan here!! We had a great run last year, struggling just a bit this year, lost a lot of good players to graduation, the NFL, injuries. Still looking good to compete for the MWC title, just need someone to knock of TCU. They've already been in 2 overtime games and squeeked out wins, Wyoming looks like the team with the best chance to knock them off. Many Utah fans are big BYU haters, but I tolerate them, unless we're playing each other.

Also following the Gators this year, got some gator friends on the WISH boards, and even though Urban lied and said he was going to stay forever, I didn't believe him, and appreciate what he did for our program. He's a great coach, we'll just have to see if he can win with his own players eventually. He's won with the previous coaches' recruits at each of his stops so far, hasn't stayed long enough to have to fully recruit his own set of players.

I'm actually a Weber State Univ. grad (pronounced Weeber, not webber), in Ogden Utah, a 1-AA school, some of you might remember us as giant killers in March Madness, we've knocked off North Carolina and Georgetown in recent years, really have a nice basketball tradition, and have even sent a few players to the NFL over the years (Jamie Martin is a backup QB for the Rams). We have Utah's old coach Ron McBride now, a great guy and a lot of fun, and things are looking up for our football program. We're the Wildcats, but locally they call us the Weeb-cats, so...
Go Webe-Cats!
Go Utes!

Now, don't be too sure of that! Yes, Texas is awesome this year, and OU's performances have been less than stellar, but that all goes out the window when it comes to this rivalry. There is so much emotion involved and even though we probably won't win this game (although I've been saying that for the past five years :teeth: ), I wouldn't bet too quickly that OU won't try to make a game of it. And, I'm pretty sure the "Mighty Sooners" will rise again next year; our guys are just young and inexperienced right now. We have too much talent to stay down for long.

I'm off to pack! We leave for Dallas at 2:00!

Boomer Sooner!!!!

Even Mack Brown isn't dumb enough to not be able to figure out how to stop the sooners. Pack eight in the box at ALL times and make their "quarterbacks" (and I use that term loosely) throw the ball.

Sorry, Soonerfan...I have a feeling that tomorrow, the Horns are going to take out several years worth of frustration on the Sooners.

I have just one thing to say. Notre Dame, Notre Dame!

You're awful happy for a team staring down the barrel of a USC blowout next week. :teeth:

WVREVY,

Pitt and Maryland are the only remaining old rivals. In my day there was nothing better than a win at old Mountainer Field and a nice big party in Sunnyside. I even remember Bobby Bowden being hung in effigy (sp?) at Woodburn circle and look at him now.

Let's hope Big East football makes a comeback.

LET'S GO 'EERS

Wow...Sunnyside and Woodburn Circle are two things I'd never thought to read on the DIS :teeth: Ya' know...I played a midget league football championship on Old Mountaineer Field, and picked off a pass and took it back for a touchdown. Highlight of my football career. ;)

We've got a nice rivalry developing with Maryland, and I think we might just put one together with Louisville as well. But other than the Pittiful Panthers, you're right...all those old rivals have gone away. But like I told Bob above, it's funny how that happened about the time we started really getting it together. ::yes:: Wanna bet that if we'd rolled over for the Traitors..er...Hokies over the past few years, they'd still be on the schedule ?

But don't worry...The Big East will be just fine. With the youth we have, we'll be a top 10 team over the next couple years. Louisville is good, if not the world-beater they thought they were. Syracuse will be back to being a decent team. South Florida and Cincinnati are situated in two recruiting hotbeds that, if they can only marginally take advantage of, should see them getting better in a hurry. And UCONN has the full backing of their administration and will, within a few years, be among the premiere programs in the northeast (and BC will crash and burn, which will be an AWFUL lot of fun to watch). Shoot, even Rutgers is showing a lot of signs of improvement...finally.

As for Pitt...well, everybody needs a few cupcakes on the schedule, just to balance things out.

Make sure to watch the game tomorrow...I have a feeling that either Gwaltney or Slaton are about to start rewriting the WVU history books.

Good job Texas! :cool1:

And Michigan lost AGAIN today... :rotfl: Yay Gophers! :teeth:

Our team has a night game against Penn State--Go Bucks!

Don't count out Notre Dame just yet. I don't think it will be as "blown out" as people think! :)

A few thoughts after watching a day of college ball:

- When USC is focused, they can't be stopped. They come out - as my old football coach would say - lackadaisical in every game...toy with the other team for a half...then put the pedal to the metal and score like a pinball machine. Bad new for the Irish: I think they'll be focused next week from the opening kickoff.

- Like I said above, Oklahoma just didn't have anything for the Horns. Only surprise was that the Horns didn't run it up more. They certainly could have.

- I hate that Louisville seems to have their offense back on track. A team with that talented of a running back and that throws the ball that well makes me very nervous coming into Morgantown next week.

- Major props to JoePa and the Nitwits. That was possibly the biggest win for Penn State since they entered the Big Can't Count Conference. If they can get by Michigan, they look like the heavy favorite to win the conference title and head to a BCS game. But don't get your hopes up too much...I can't see Texas or USC losing, and that's the only way you get a shot at the national title.

- UCLA looks like a pretty strong contender for 2nd in the Pac 10. Heckuva turnaround out in LaLa land.

- Georgia just sewed up the SEC. But this might just be the second year in a row that the undefeated SEC champion gets locked out of the championship BCS game. How funny would that be for everyone other than SEC fans ? :teeth:

I agree with everything you said about USC. I am not a big college football fan, but this season, I have been watching a lot of games and USC seems like a powerhouse of skill and energy. It will definitely be an exciting game to watch next week! :)

Believe me, I don't mean to come off as anti-Irish. I have all the respect in the world for Charlie Weiss and the job he's done out there this year. Turning Notre Dame from a team that was fading from the national consciousness into a team that everybody is starting to follow again is quite an accomplishment, and he deserves all of the accolades that have been given.

But USC is just scary. It's like they can score when they feel like scoring, regardless of what the other team does. I honestly can't remember another team that seems to be able to score with this much ease when they need to. These last three weeks, it's almost seemed like they were just toying with their competition. Like they were a cat playfully toying with a mouse...just before ripping it's head off. :teeth:

OK, fine you were right, big deal! :p :p But, don't blame a girl for believing in Sooner Magic!!!!

I really don't know what's up with Bomar (our QB). He looks like he never played football a day in his life, rather than a blue chip top high school recruit! He has the potential to be a great athlete, he just needs to get over what seems to be a horrible mental block. Oh, and the fact that our top RB was injured and didn't play much hurt us a lot too. I think if he had been 100%, the Sooners showing would have been a bit more respectable (we probably still would have lost, but maybe not by as much).

Oh well, there's always next year. And I still love my Sooners!

A Big T11en title would be good enough this year!!!

The last time they had this good of a shot at the title was probably their first year in the league -- the year they got hosed out of the National Title because they put in second stringers against Indiana and moron voters thought it was a close game and dropped them below (I believe) Nebraska late in the year.

Pete Carroll decided that there will be no replay in the USC/ND game.

Anyone think it'll come down to a disputed call?

Is that because he doesn't want people reviewing "his" ref's calls? (Notre Dame is an Independent and doesn't have their "own" officials)

Sorry this is off topic but EdiePA is Penn going to cheer competition in Dayton this Spring? My daughter cheers for a junior College, Trinity Valley Community College. They are defending champions in the junior college group!
