Hey Clay fans!!
This is my first time posting with you guys. Mostly because everytime I started to get into the thread, I'd start reading, and then I'd see a pic in a siggy or something and then I'd start thinking, and then I'd get worked up, and then I couldn't post cause....well...*sigh*
But anyhoo, I'm here. And I'm trying to work on my plan B because I was on the busy end of Ticketmaster while they were selling out the tickets to any of the shows I could've attended. Plan B requires a declaration of my fandom....think any of you guys would be up to reading my essay and letting me know what you think? I'd appreciate it....LOTS.
Anyhoo, if you oblige, here it is:
---------------------------
Ive had to explain myself so many times that Im finally just putting it in writing. Consider this my declaration: Yes, I, Kylene, am a fan of Clay Aiken. Im no Claymate though, I can promise you that. You wont find his name written anywhere on my body, not in paint, marker, or anything more permanent. My room isnt plastered with posters because, quite frankly, if I ever visited someone who had my face staring from every wall, I think Id be a little freaked out. (And yes, I take precautions, just in case he ever comes to pop in for a visit.) Ive never been a crier, though I admit to letting a tear or two drop for sentimental reasons. Im not a screamer, either in fact, Im pretty sure Im incapable of making noises that only dogs can hear. Im just a fan, one who knows every word to every song, but one who would much rather hear Clay sing than her own karaoke voice.
Im a Clay fan because
well, Im not entirely sure how, or when, it happened. I think I can blame it on the now 10 year-old I babysit, Rebecca. Ive been her sitter since before she was even born, and weve rubbed off on each other quite a bit. Shes a very talented writer and loves to tell stories something I think is a result of my own passion for words and language. Shes also a fan of Harry Potter, the series I started reading to her every night before bed when she was seven, and which she could read entirely on her own by nine.
For her part, Rebecca made me a Clay fan. I fought it tooth and nail all the way, vowing not to get caught up in the hoopla of American Idol, but she was smitten with Mr. Aiken. My sisters friend once described Clay during an early audition as Harry Potter because of his glasses. I have to admit, Im a fan of the glasses and maybe thats what caught Rebeccas eye from the beginning. Shed call me every time he made a television appearance or she heard some updated news. Her favorite subject to draw became stick figure portraits. Three of them, to be precise herself, me, and, in the middle holding our hands, Clay in a baseball cap. (As a side note: Who knew Clay could look so realistic as a stick figure?!) As a result, I found myself breaking my vow.
Of course, its not the glasses that make me a Clay fan these days (especially considering he hardly wears them anymore) what can I say? The kid can sing! I enjoy the fullness of his voice, and Im a big fan of the slight Southern inflection that comes out at just the right times. Its also nice to have a couple of cds that I can listen to with Rebecca or my own grandmother in the car without having to either cringe at or explain the lyrics. (Of course, the three of us have had a few heated debates about just who hes singing to in all those songs
)
You know that hypothetical question, If you could have dinner with three people, who would you choose? Well, Ive often thought about it (yeah, Saturday nights are pretty dull round these parts), and I think Clay would make a good choice. I have a lot of respect for people who follow their dreams, but even more respect for dreamers who remember where they came from. Clays commitment to charities and kids especially is a remarkable example to both celebrities and the rest of us mortals. For example, as a volunteer for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Ive witnessed the power of smiles and laughter. Unfortunately, Ive also seen what disappointment can do, so it always makes me personally proud when I hear of experiences with actors and musicians who go out of their way to make wishes truly come true. Clay is one of those artists who got rave reviews from Wish Kids recently, and I have the utmost respect for him because of it. In addition, by setting up the Bubel/Aiken Foundation, Clay has demonstrated his loyalty to the causes he believes in. I am currently working in a clinic for children with developmental and emotional disabilities, where several of our families are dealing with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders. I often think of how Clay would fit in with our staff it takes a very special person to work with these very special kids, and when one is as passionate about it as Clay has expressed himself to be, you cant help but respect him.
So yes
I think Id ask Clay to my hypothetical dinner. (I suppose Id have to pull up a hypothetical chair for Rebecca, too.) And maybe hed wear the glasses if I asked him nicely.
