The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

I asked my trainer at the gym her opinion and here is her advice: give up my last 2 long runs. She believes that I have inflammation there and that the long runs are going to aggravate it. She suggested rest, ice, ibruprofen, and alternate workouts for cardio(spin & elliptical). I think this is sound advice, but I'm a bit bummed about giving up my 12.5 and 14 mile runs leading up to our race day. (I hoped that it would mentally prepare me most of all, since I would know that I already ran a longer distance.) I considered just giving up this week's long run and wait and see how I feel 2 weeks from now when I'm scheduled for my final long run. Any thoughts?

BTW, I read online a little bit about KT tape. Any experience? Did it help? I also saw that they offer KT taping at the expo. Are the lines usually long for this at the expo? Would this best be done on Saturday afternoon?

I also have a 10k run tomorrow for a qualifying corral time. Supposed to be rainy/cold tomorrow, so I'm hoping it won't negatively affect my time.

:)

Your trainer is correct in some ways. I would bail on the circuit training first. What I find is that form often fails when working in a situation where one is looking to move from workout to workout.

Then, as stated above, do not bail on everything just yet. I would not run this week at all then see how you feel coming into the next long run. I would think that you will feel good for the next run, but feel free to cut it short if not. Of the next two long runs, your goal is to make at least one and try for a distance
of 9-12 miles. I would forget the 14 mile run at this point in time.

If your knee gets worse, I would also suggest a visit to an orthopedic doc just to be sure. It is more than likely a soft tissue issue, but it would help settle your mind.

With regard to KTape, the line can be long at the expo. Try to hit the expo early or late to get the shortest lines. I would look at the videos and see if your pain is described by the PT on the videos. I would not feel compelled to try to tape myself pre-race unless you see your symptoms. Even then, there are several ways to tape an issue. The PTs at the expo do a great job.

Hang in there. You are almost there.

One other ? about the expo:
When is the best time to go to avoid the heaviest crowds? I was thinking about going first thing on Friday morning, but are the opening times pretty popular?

Adding a thought....

If you are in town for Expo open, head to the Jostens Center and stand on line there, about 45-60 minutes pre-opening. The long lines will be at the HP Field House where one must go first for the bib. Yes, this is backwards and not what 99% of the folks will do. You are on line for the KTape booth. You will be there with other folks getting taped and the EBayers who are looking to snag their bounty before the runners get there. Once the door opens make a bee line to the booth and get taped. After that, then go to the HP and the line may be non existent or really short.

I got my 12.5 miles in this morning. I did ~6.25 then meet my running group for 5 and finished up with 1.25 on my own at the end. My runkeeper is screwy though. It shows the map splits and charts correctly but my total time and distance are 0.00?

The humidity was back in full force. 100% humidity at 4am. I was dripping.

Yeah! I bet it feels awesome to have it done for the weekend.

I'm playing the "stalk the weather" game. I was hoping to go tomorrow afternoon or morning but now there's a small chance of rain. I could try for this afternoon but I kinda promised a trip to the pumpkin farm already and i cant disappoint my son. I suppose it's feasible that I could go when we get back but I didn't exactly pre-fuel and hydrate the way I like to the day before a long run. (Martini w my cheeseburger dinner- hey we were celebrating). I think I'll chance the rain tomorrow and go hunt up my hat. But 10 miles in the rain is not fun. Could use a no-rain spell or something. Lol!!!

Good luck to everyone on their runs this weekend!

DH and I just pulled off either 12.5 or 11.4, depending on the pedometer. I guess we can compromise and say 12. :) We did great time, 2 hrs and 43 seconds. I definitely find I run faster with music which I had today, but usually don't. I'm feeling very confident right now. I wish we could fast forward to 4 weeks from now! :hyper:

So I consider it part of my half marathon WDW training that after every long run I take the kids and do something walking intensive. Currently motivating to go to the Kay Rice Festival as soon as I can switch the laundry. It is possible that will be more challenging than the 12.5 miles earlier.

Congrats on your long runs Peachygreen and Camcolt! Way to go!

Figment and Coach Charles - thanks for the advice and the encouragement to wait and see how things go rather than giving up the long runs entirely.

Although it probably wasn't the wisest choice with my knee pain, I completed a 10k race for corral placement. The run went pretty well - weather was perfect and my knee didn't hurt, but there were hills(not used to that) and the roads were still covered with lots of wet leaves from all the rain we had(making me a bit more cautious of slips/falls). While my goal was to come in under 1 hour, my time was 1:01:03...drat, missed it by a minute! Ah well, it was a good run so overall I'm pleased. I checked the website for estimating my 1/2 marathon time and it said: 2:15:22. It appears that I will miss W&D's corral E by 23 seconds...kind of a bummer, but I'm still happy to have a time to submit so I can move up. Anyone else in corral F? :wave2:

Coach Charles - thanks for the advice on cutting back on circuit training...I was thinking that I would reach a point at the end of my training where I wouldn't be able to do it all. I like this idea better than skipping the long runs entirely. :) I like your suggestion to get in line for KT taping first thing on Friday too. Thanks!

? about submitting time for corral placement: When submitting my 10k time, what do I need to show as proof?

Have a great weekend runners!

I suggest adding a new estimated finish time, if appropriate.

However, isn't it past the time for mailing a submittal. Bring a copy of your results wot the expo with all the above.

I finally found this thread this afternoon- I knew it had to be out there. I live in CT and am doing the wine & dine this year. I did it last year and had a great time.

I participated in the Hartford race this morning- I did a leg of the relay rather than the half marathon. Last year I did both halves and it was too much strain on the system. I figured this way I could get out there for a great run without breaking myself.

To anyone who did finish the half- excellent work! I'm very proud of you. It was a great day for a run. Anyone hard core who did the full 26.2- hope you heard me yelling as you went past :).

only 4 weeks till the big day! can't wait. Looked up my bib and corral placement. A little freaked out that with the same approx time, I went from corral b last year to E this year. I guess the rest of you have really stepped up your game! I was happy to be holding steady...
My DH got into corral B. I was worried about this, but I just rechecked the stagger start times and it's only a 7 minute difference. Last year each was 5 minutes and that would have been a huge gap.

thank you all for sharing your story with the rest of us. If there's anything I can add from my race last year as a 1st timer let me know.

Ok, I have no idea what the Kay Rice festival is down there in Houston, but it just so happens that my husband's aunt is Kay Rice:lmao:. I'm fairly certain there is no relation, but that caught my attention:goodvibes.

Fairly certain that a 't' is missing... Katy Rice Fest.

Just finished 8 miles. Hip grabbed a little but never got worse. I was super slow but DH was right there beside me pushing on. Glad I did it.

Only 5 to go!

Yep that is it. I swear posting from my phone makes me look illiterate.

It was very hot and then very wet and I am now very tired.

Understand that a long run of 8 make you good to go for race night. Its not a prime level of training to come into the race but you can make it to the end if you find that you need to lay off a bit.

Great job.

Did a 5K fun run today with DD10. It was a fundraiser to raise money for research, education and support for families of stillborn babies. They did a balloon release at the beginning with the names of babies lost to stillbirth. After that, there were kids races and each kiddo got a ribbon. Then they lined up everyone who was going to either walk a mile or walk/run the 5K route. The race was run through a large park and DD asked that we try the 4/2 interval instead of the 3/2 that she prefers. I was impressed that she really wanted to stay with me because I wanted to really push myself since this is my last 5K of the year. She matched me stride for stride! After the second run interval, I told her that our next 4 minute run would be an "easy" one. I thought we should maybe slow up just a little since we were going at an 11:15 pace:cool1:. Just as we started running, we rounded a corner to meet up with the ONLY uphill on the course:faint:. We plowed through it and when we got to the top, DD says to me, "Mom, I thought you said this was going to be an EASY 4 minutes?!":rotfl2: The course was just a bit short so we ran a little extra on the road before we re-entered the park for the finish line. We did exactly 3.1 miles and DD10 finished with me with a time of 35:45:goodvibes. I'm more excited for her since she did it in a sub-12:00 pace:worship:.

Now, it is time to focus back on the 1/2 Marathon. I just bought some of the powdered peanut butter that they were talking about on the Let's Run Disney podcast and it is great. I have a huge peanut butter addiction and this stuff is a great replacement. Instead of 200 calories per serving, it's only 45:cool1:. It even packs 5g of protein into each serving so I can eat it almost guilt-free:thumbsup2 Double bonus...it's powdered so I can pack it in my carry-on!

Did the Hartford 1/2 yesterday. The size of it was intimidating in the beginning, but it was a really good race. I was actually feeling really good. Ended up getting a PR 2:24:19 which was a 11:00 per minute pace. The amount of security there creepy and reassuring at the same time. But never gave my safety a second thought. Amazing to think that the marathon winner finished even before I finished my half:lmao:

Just finished my 10 miles. Goodness that wasn't pretty. I seemed to have found the hilliest possible route to run today plus it started raining on me halfway thru which I normally wouldn't mind but I was just struggling. I started late, didn't run where I planned to run because of activities going on, had to keep doubling back past my car for water and powerade, and all in all, it stunk. But I did it. At least I know the half will seem easier than that, thanks to the flatter course and better water stops!

I'm questioning my preparation now for the race. I was worried about my training plan. because of the 10k I did 2 weeks ago, I actually hadn't run longer than 6 miles since sept 22nd when I ran 9 miles until the 10 today. So then last two weekends I did 6 and my midweek runs are between 3.5-4.5. I planned to run 6 next weekend, 11 or 11.5 the next and then 5 the weekend before the race. Now I'm worried that won't be enough. Last year I had an injury that threw me off for the first few weeks of oct so I did 11 on 9/29, and then 6-8-11-4 leading up to the race and i felt like i added too much too fast and felt the beginnings of my dreaded shin splints right before race day. I don't want to burn out this year again but am I doing enough?

(Edited to add: just reviewed my training log from last year and plan for this year. Last October I ran 50 miles total. This year I should be closer to 63 for October. September totals were similar both years. So maybe I am just having pre-race jitters. Plus I don't feel sick this year after my long runs like I did last year so something must be working a little better.)

I you feel you need a few extra miles, I would make the weekend pre-race a 6-8 miler. Other than that you are good to go

I ran 13.25 today! I am so ready! What's difference a cooler temp makes! I hit the ten mile mark ten whole minutes earlier than I completed the Tower of Terror 10 miler last weekend and I felt fantastic when I finished my run!

So I've ran into my first snag in my training plan. The area directly behind my left knee started nagging me with a bit of pain last Saturday. It really hasn't been bad, just mild soreness which I hoped would go away, but it hasn't. It was mildly there for my two 30 min. runs this week and became pretty obvious in my circuit training class today.

FWIW, another possibility is inflammation/misalignment in your poplitiis(sp?). I used to have issues with mine but the chiro has always been able to work her magic and make the discomfort go away almost immediately. It was explained to me as there are 2 bones that meet at the back of the knee. One is supposed to slide over the other and not butt into it. When it does, that's when the pain can start. I'm hardly an expert, but just thought I'd throw it out there in case you have a chiro. :confused3

BTW, I read online a little bit about KT tape. Any experience? Did it help? I also saw that they offer KT taping at the expo. Are the lines usually long for this at the expo? Would this best be done on Saturday afternoon?

I started using it a few months back and love it! Originally, taped up for ITBS which did nothing. Then I switched to full knee support and it seems to be doing the trick. One thing I found though, is the longer it's on that day, the better it sticks. I'll probably put mine on that morning after my shower and give it all day for my body heat to warm up the adhesive and help it stick, (along with the pre-tape spray I always use).

Keep up the good work everybody! I can't wait to read everyone's long run reports this weekend.

:)

Yucky run today :(. I had 12.5 miles to do according to the Galloway plan. The weather was great but I just wasn't into it. My legs seemed tired but I think it was more my mental state. Just a crappy crappy week AND two of my chEAR squad had to cancel and can't come to see me run :(. I managed only 5.5 miles before calling it quits. I'll be getting in a lot of walking around NYC this weekend but I don't think it will make up for missing my 12.5 today.
Thanks for letting me whine!
Melinda
