The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Good job on all the runs this weekend - I got in 7 slow, ugly miles, but done this morning. It was warm and very humid here in Central VA, but hoping it preps me for FL weather! Good luck to all who still have runs coming up!

I ask because next year I would stay at the hotel of my choice and not a host hotel so I would be wondering how do you make it to your hotel if the buses that take your around are finished.

You will have to taxi it back to your non-host resort.

Charles St 12 Miler - check! Longest I've ever run and chose to do it in an actual race. Finished in 2:35. I was hoping for under 2:30 but am still very happy I finished. Especially since a supposedly downhill course was very hilly! Felt like dooky at the end though, EMT actually had to check my blood pressure. All is good now, I think I just need to hydrate better leading up to a race. Miles 10 and 11 kicked my butt, even though it was hard I'm really glad I did it and am still looking forward to W&D!

Awesome!! 3.04 miles in 44:49 (14:44 min/mi split), with 360.9 ft elevation gain. Average speed was 4.09 MPH). Really pleased considering it was hilly, heat of the day, and I wasn't wearing my good sneakers. Disney 5K here I come! Calves slightly sore, but recovering quickly. No back pain! Up next? The Color Me Rad 5K at Chatfield next Saturday.

Hi all Happy Friday! Checking in after my long run for this week. Somewhere in between unbearable humidity and pouring down rain, I managed to get in 8 miles :cool1: Was really nervous about this one but it went great. I love it when I get my whole run in, get in the car to drive home, and THEN it pours down rain :thumbsup2
I still struggle with the whole "Go slower on the long runs" thing, so I took several longer walk breaks during the second half. Still managed to get a great time in, 12:30 for me is fantastic in this weather so YAY! The hardest part are the first three or so miles. Once I get past mile 4, I'm golden.
Today I stuck to my gatorade fueling plan which always works best for me. Tried the liquid fuel pouch thing... not sure I like it, but it WAS grape unlike the chewys which is important LOL. I think I need to experiment with fueling more often in the first half.

Question- what kind of socks do you wear when running? Up to now I've been using some Hanes dry socks that I got at target. Super comfy for shorter runs but they've been bugging me lately. Anyone got an idea of anything better? I'm not opposed to spending a bit more if I have to.

Alright everyone good luck this weekend! :cheer2: I for one can't wait for fall.

I've gotten picky about socks the higher my miles. I've gone to a wool blend, padded sock like SmartWool when I think my shoes are gonna get wet. I also like running with good cotton socks. However, I just have to TRY them, because there are some thin socks that just make me miserable... they seem slicker and my feet slide around a lot, especially if I'm on hills.

My favorite place to buy socks is Sierra Trading Post. They have so many high end options if you don't mind shopping every month or so to get the best discounts.

This morning during my longest run so far, it was densely foggy. As I ran, miniscule droplets of water caught on my eyelashes until it seemed as if I was looking through diamonds. I'm pretty sure that this was Silvermist at work, but I did not get any photos to share. :(

Maybe next time! :)

7 miles today....my longest so far!! Only 13 weeks left, time to kick it into high gear!!

HA! Love it! :thumbsup2

Lots of 7s this weekend. :thumbsup2 I did a 7.5, felt like pushing the bar a tad. ;) I went on a trail near my house. It was going to be an out and back. On the way out, I was cruising. Feeling great, the third mile actually ended up being my fastest ever. :cheer2: On the way back I realized why....I was going down hill. :rotfl2: It was just slight enough that I did not notice it on the way out, but certainly noticed it on the way back. My average ended up being about my normal, so it was not too bad though.

I hit 11 two weeks ago so I decided to taper for a few weeks while winding up to the DLR 10K on 8/31.

I ran 4 miles this morning, continuous (no Galloway intervals) and on the road and popped out an 11:41 mile! My fastest non-treadmill time ever.

I won't be anywhere near that fast for W&D but it makes me feel strong, even though I'm not building miles right now. Gives me that "I can do it" attitude! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

7 humid miles for me. I knew it was bad when i was dripping wet after only a mile. lol Finished week 10 of a 17 week program I'm doing for a half end of Sept.

Wow! That is a lot of 7 mile runs this weekend! WTG everyone! I for one, did ZERO miles this weekend. I got so sick late Thursday night, could not get out of bed Friday, and am just today starting to feel strong enough to do stuff around the house. Yuck! Totally and completely threw me off my plan (which was for 6, not 7 miles, so I suppose I would have been behind everyone anyhow). So I decided to flip my "long runs" for last weekend and next, doing 6 next Saturday (or Friday) and 7 the following, before breaking to 3.5 the next week for my planned cutback week.

In retrospect I should probably have not run on Thursday as I was feeling pretty lousy all day. But at least so far then I only missed one run! (We runners really are nuts)

Time to do some stretching and core work, hopefully I can handle it!

Yay for all the runs this weekend!

I think I am experiencing the "too much too fast" syndrome because my shins/calves are KILLING me, so bad to where I went to do 6 miles on Saturday and ended up only being able to walk 3.5 until DH came to get me. I am experiencing a pain behind my right tibia on the inside middle area of my lower leg, as well as some inner calf pain. I have experienced this SAME pain before and I think its due to too much speed work at once.

Pretty sure I need to A) get some new shoes, B) Do KT tape for awhile, C) Rest for a few days which really chaps my hide, and D) NOT wear compression socks during my run because as I discovered yesterday it only makes it worse.

Aside from that, I feel like training is going fairly well.

Melinda - Yes, I *think* your friends can use these tickets. I am pretty sure they are like any normal PH ticket but I will confirm tomorrow with RunDisney.

GoofeyGirl - Anthony is right, you will have to catch a taxi back to your non-host resort after the Finish Line Party, however a Disney rep did tell me that all resort buses will run until 2 AM that night from Epcot. I'm not sure if I trust this information, but its a start.

So looking forward to this event!

- Carey

i only did 3 miles saturday because thats what the training calling for, my shins and legs are killing me anyway so it was good to have an easy week

When you guys go for your runs (long or otherwise), do you prefer 76 degrees in the morning with 80%-90% humidity or 89 degrees later with 65% humidity?

The morning long run helped me avoid at least the sun and a lot of the tourists/traffic, so I started 6:30am and by the time I finished the 15 miles everything was getting crowded. It's long run season in DC now, I guess. I looked like I went swimming--there's nothing grosser than wanting to wipe the sweat off your face but your shirt is completely soaked! Yuck.

And I came home all set to watch Tangled but my dvd player broke. Oh well, I settled for Cars on ABCfamily.

I much prefer the morning. But I'm usually out the door by 5:30 so there's very little of everything. :-)

Balloon Ladies revealed--- anyone have concerns about the not-so-scary balloon ladies? Here's some answers!

http://margaritasmilesandmouse.blogspot.com/2013/08/bursting-balloon-lady-bubble.html

OMG - I cannot believe you found "THE" balloon ladies! That's awesome!

Here's my "balloon lady" story (which actually isn't a balloon lady story at all but it's funny to laugh at myself now). Last year's Wine & Dine was my first race and I felt completely prepared for the actual running part. But the logistics of the final mile and the incredulity that I was actually running a distance race still did a number on me at the end.

Last year, when we entered Epcot around mile 12-12.5, there were these guys on bikes. Now, by this point, for me, that was around 2:40. I started in the MIDDLE of Corral E (out of F). That's around a 13 min mile pace. That means I had a 40-50 minute buffer built up so far. But when I turned into the backstage area before epcot and saw those guys on bikes I completely freaked out! I started running SO. FAST. I was convinced they were the sweepers. :confused3 (they weren't). I was certain that no one on the DIS, not even Coach Charles, had a clue what they were talking about with balloon people or sweepers or Storm troopers! DH said that I flew past him sprinting when he saw me outside of the Imagination pavillion. I booked it past Space Ship Earth, blindly following some official looking dude waving a flashlight which I later learned was them directing runners and spectators across the course and then entered the strobe-light fog tunnel where they were blaring Lady Gaga's Edge of Glory ready to bound across the finish line. I mean, doesn't that just sound like a finish line to you? :lmao: But no, you turn a corner and keep running. And running. And running. Finally I got to the finish line but I was SO wiped out from sprinting the last mile! By the time I got into Epcot to meet up with DH, I had to wait to cross the course with the spectators this time (that's when I figured out what the flashlight guy was doing). So that should give you an idea of how ridiculous the idea of being swept had been. I ended up finishing ahead of 1/3 of the people in the race, which I was REALLY pleased with since basically I just wanted to finish.

I'm not saying that worrying about the sweepers isn't a real fear, even for people who train below 12 or 13 min miles because anything can happen during a race. But :worship: THANK YOU to Longhorns2 for finding the REAL balloon ladies. Next time I see guys on bikes, when I have 45 min left to run less than 1 mile, I won't freak out!

Awww man! When I saw all of those 7-mile runs completed this weekend I felt very lazy and a little envious! Mad that I didn't push to train last week because it is so inspiring when several people are virtually running with you ;). Congrats to all of the fantastic weekend runs and here's a a great week ahead! Anyone running 7 again next weekend?

Well, last week I only did one dinky 4-mile run and then a bunch of hiking in the Rocky Mountains because we had visitors and traveled around a bit. Since I essentially missed a week of training runs, I am now working on week 3 of my 12-week training schedule. (I started my training a couple of weeks early in order to accommodate a couple of "off" weeks so I'm not too worried.) Anyway, I've added a little mileage to my maintenance runs this week to help me get back on track. I ran 3.25 on Sunday and 4 miles today. I'm thinking I'll aim to do 4-5 tomorrow, 4 on Wednesday or Thursday, and then I have my 7 mile long run on Saturday. Already looking forward to some yoga class and stretching on Sunday. Also, I've decided when I hit the halfway point of my training in completing my week 6 runs, I am getting a deep tissue massage. It will be incredibly motivating to push through 9 miles :)
