The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

What's worse is when you work with a bunch of runners and they even don't want to hear about it.

The other runners in my building are all veterans compared to me and sometimes I get the feeling they think I'm not "in their league". Or maybe that's my insecurities talking.

i went out and got fitted for some new shoes today i was getting some pain in my inner calf so i figured some new shoes might help, plus mine had a lot of limes.. i ended up getting the new balance 1340s. they dont have the best reviews online so im a little worried but we will see when i try running in them tomorrow. if they suck ill just return them. i have 30 days

I've been on vacation in the Hills of Tennessee since Friday. I'm proud of myself for not missing a run yet. This Houstonian is not used to hills and there were some big ones at the state park. Huge hills.

I've done a lot of running and hiking over the past few days. Now onto vacation part 2 = water park and ropes course. My goal is to get up and get a run in tomorrow morning. I should probably get to sleep sson so that can happen.

Hi everyone!

I wanted to post a couple of comments and questions based on the most recent pages of the thread:

BOOKING ROOMS:
Ya'll who haven't done this yet should get on it. I slacked, and wanted to stay Poly, and because Disney is currently offering a 30% room only discount during the Wine&Dine 1/2, the ENTIRE RESORT is sold out. Nada. Same with Beach, Yacht, and Boardwalk. I ended up getting Animal Kingdom club level rooms for DH/myself, and mom/dad but if you want to stay deluxe get your room NOW.

PARK HOPPER TICKETS:
So, in an interesting turn of events, my parents and DH/myself decided to extend our vacation, coming in Monday 11/4 instead of Friday, 11/8. This is me not complaining at ALL, however I already purchased 2 day PH tickets for DH/myself through RunDisney. I now want to get 5 day PH tickets instead. Is there anyone that needs 2 day PH tickets at the RunDisney price? Because adding on 3 days to our 2 day is more money for me than selling what I paid for 2 day and getting brand new 5 day. Please email me directly at careymc28 (at) msn (dot) com if you want to buy them from me. I paid $291.82 and would take a $290 paypal payment or something to send them on to you. They are plastic tickets with no names assigned (or dates even, I am pretty sure). I won't even charge any shipping.

WINE & DINE FESTIVAL:
I would love to hear other's stories regarding the special experiences, because since we are all going to be there for the last week of it we thought some of them sounded like fun. Specifically considering the Parisian Breakfast and maybe the Teppan Edo expensive 6 course dinner. None of us drink really at all so the WINE part if kind of a waste. But aside from that, any suggestions welcomed.

RUNNING:
Yay for everyone and their training! I did a 5K on the treadmill with intervals but averaged a 12:00 minute per mile pace, which I am pleased with. With about 90 days to go, I think I can get into my 10:30 goal and maybe beat my time two years ago!

:) - Carey

I'll talk with DP about park tickets...we were going to not do parks this time, but I may revisit that idea.

Tips for Food & Wine:
•Go during the week.
•Eat around the world instead of having a table service or counter service lunch/dinner.
•Share your food within your party. That way you can try more things.
•If you are going more than one day (I would try for three if your travel party allows), start one day going clock wise from World Showcase Plaza (in the direction of Mexico), start the second day going anti-clock wise from World Showcase Plaza (in the direction of Canada). On the third day hit the booths that had your favorite foods.
•Don't forget to check out the Wonders of Life pavilion for the Festival Headquarters. There are some nice (and relatively inexpensive {especially on Disney property}) 30-60 minute presentations.
•Buying a Disney gift card to use at the food kiosks makes it far quicker and easier to pay for your purchases. And that way you won't end up with 18 lbs. of change in your pockets and the end of the day. If there is money left on the card, it can be used for most anything on Disney property, it doesn't have to be at Food & Wine. ((FYI--same thing goes for the gift card you get with your race bib--it can be used for anything, it doesn't need to be used for food & wine or at the after party.))

Having a boss that cares and wants you to succeed with your running goals is a helpful thing. Mine helps me 'find days off' if I run short of vacation time and need a day or two for a race weekend. :thumbsup2

Okay everyone get ready to step of your game! Someone just broke a 14 minute mile tonight, oh yeah :)

WOO HOO! You go girl! :cool1::banana::cool1::banana::thumbsup2:dance3:

I did my first 10-mile distance 7 days ago and then had a 4-day vacation. I came back and ran 6.5 miles on Tuesday. I want to run today, maybe 3-4 miles at most, but I am hesitant. Since Tuesday, I have had a near-constant ache in both of my knees. Nothing makes it better or worse...movement, weight-bearing, rest...it's just constant. It isn't severe, it's just there...all the time. I have had this discomfort many, many times, since childhood, and it has always been relieved 100% by some ibuprofen. I've taken 4 doses (800mg each) of ibuprofen since Tuesday and it is still there. It's not even something that would keep me from running since it doesn't change, but I am nervous that I could make it worse. This is the first time since I started running that I have experienced this discomfort so I am not sure that it is necessarily an "injury". I can't even say for sure that it is related to running:confused3.

The other issue I am dealing with is the second toe on my right foot. The joint where it connects to my foot gets very painful during/after my run. This started last week on the 10-miler and recurred on my 6-miler on Tuesday. I'm hoping it is just an inflammatory response and not something worse. But that brings me back to today...should I run or not??? It's gorgeous outside! 74 degrees, sunny and breezy...perfect:cloud9:.

Since I am inside of three months to race day, I need to make sure that I really get going on my training. I try very hard to run 3 days a week and go at least 3 miles (trying to up it to 4) every time I run. I have a 4-day work weekend starting tomorrow so if I don't run today, it will be a full week in between runs. Is this OK since we are getting so close? I feel like I need to get my "short" runs up to 4-6 miles instead of the 3 I've been doing. I know that if I can consistently finish 6 miles at a 12:30-13 minute pace, then I can finish the 1/2 marathon within the pacing requirements, even if I have to walk more in the second half.

OK, vent is over...no more excuses. I am going to make sure the kids are OK with me leaving for 45 minutes and I am going to try for 3.5 miles. We'll see how this goes....stay tuned:laughing:.

I hope your run went ok. And by ok, i mean one of two things, either a) your knees felt ok or b)you felt pain and decided to back off a bit. I added b) because one of the fun(?) things about distance training seems to be learning how to listen to your body. Personally, to me, I haven't reached the point where I know 100% if an ache or pain should sideline me completely or if I can still run at a lesser intensity or distance. At least not prior to actually going out on a run, I don't "know" the answer in my head. So it's still mostly a guessing game and a gut check. I tend to err on the side of, ice it, rest it a few days, and then try a little running. If it is on a 1-2 pain scale when running (or not at all) then I finish the run, if it seems to get worse, then I stop. Usually things resolve more quickly than I expect or I'm able to run with little pain. With ALL of my injuries this last year, I checked my log and only missed 5 runs last year during training for last year's W&D, 3 during my spring race training and only 1 so far this year during summer training. I run consistently 3x a week.

Regarding "this close to race time" - if you did a 10 miler last weekend, and have gone up to 6 regularly and typically run 3-4 miles 3x a week, you will be fine if you have to take a week off due to the injury and your work schedule. Unless you are trying for some super fast PR. Like you said, if you can do 6 miles at 12:30mm, then you can do the rest of your race at nearly a 19mm pace if you needed to. Plus don't forget that you might not be in the last corral, so that could get you a buffer of another 5-10 min.

But this far from race day, if you were at 10 miles last week, and can do 6 without too much trouble, a week off or dialing back the mileage or speed, or increasing walk intervals due to injury will not hurt your chances of finishing the race. It's better to not overtrain and get hurt closer to the race. At least that's the advice my BIL gave me last year (he's a trainer).

Sooner or later the store people are going to start hiding when they see me coming back with a return. :rotfl: i cannot tell you the insance quantity of shoes I've bought and returned while trying to find a pair that works.

Good luck!

Ya know, this might be my problem! I just bought my new shoes and have put two runs into them (almost 10 miles total) and my toes REALLY hurt:headache:. I like them, but I am wondering if they are also the reason my knees suddenly started aching:confused3. I guess I figured that they just needed to be "broke in", but I did not have this issue with either of the other two pairs I bought. My older ones are Saucony (lower end ones, about $55) and the new ones are Brooks ($110 ones!) so maybe I should go back to Sauconys. I will be near the running store tonight while DD is at gymnastics so maybe I will pop in and see what they say. Maybe I will just try on a pair of the $110 Sauconys.

As to how my run just went...well, there is good news and there is bad news...

First, the "bad" news...I can really tell that I have gained 10 pounds over the past 2-3 weeks because I feel like I am running with a backpack on:headache:. I just don't have the "spring in my step" like I am used to and I feel like I am lugging out every step instead of hippity hopping along. My feet were really hurting (*See above*) and I just felt "heavy". I managed to do 3.35 miles in just under 43 minutes which ended up being a 12:40 pace. I'd love to blame the shoes!

On to the good news...my knees didn't hurt AT ALL:yay:! In fact, the ache is now completely gone:woohoo:. Maybe I just needed a decent run to get the kinks out. The kids ended up coming with me. They rode their bikes and stayed right in front of me along the trail. DD10 and I are doing a 5K next Thursday night. DD7 did one 5k with us and then we found out that she has osteochondritis dessicans in her left knee:headache:. No running or impact sports for her for 6 months until she gets her next MRI. We even had to pull her out of gymnastics. It was such a bummer because she really liked that 5K, except for the pain in her knee. Unfortunately, if we want to let it heal itself without surgery (which is the optimal plan for a child of her age), she won't be able to do any running or impact sports until she is done growing:sad2:

We're off to the gym now...that hot tub is calling my name:love:.

I have a friend looking for a bib. Does anyone know of any that night be available?

I'll talk with DP about park tickets...we were going to not do parks this time, but I may revisit that idea.

Tiara Todd ;) - You know you and DP want to hit the parks this time. I'd be happy to unload my 2 days PH so I can get the appropriate 5 days. :) Thae nks also for the W&D suggestions. Are we not able to use our room key to charge at the kiosks? Cause if not that really makes a difference about using Disney gift cards over cash. Appreciate the tip!

I have enjoyed the discussion about shoes recently. Reminds me that I should get a new pair and with about 90 days to go, I should probably get them NraiOW instead of later, so I can break them in time for the run.

Happy training all!

:) - Carey

No Thursday run for me- spent half the night at the ER with DD11 last night and then since this is the last forecasted day of sunshine for my beach vacation I hit the beach for the afternoon when I finally got out of bed. We will see what tomorrow brings, if I can make it up. Not sure what to do, supposed to do 45 today and 13k Saturday.

Success!! I went to the running store and explained what happened. I told them I'd already run (outdoors) in the Brooks and that my feet were really hurting. I also told them that I started running about a year ago and have never had this problem so I am 99% sure it is the shoes. They happily took them back and then sat me down to find a pair that worked. The salesman was familiar with the Saucony Cohesion's that I'd been running in and he recommended the Ride 6's because they are similar, but the Ride's are a little higher quality. I really liked them, but he also had me try on the Echelons...eek:scared1:!. The Echelon's felt so good in my heel and arches (great support and cushioning) but they were noticably heavier than the Ride's and they didn't have quite as much toe room. The Ride's were super light and my toes had plenty of room to spread out, but there wasn't nearly as much support/cushioning in the arch and heel as with the Echelon's. I explained my evaluation to the salesman and he said, "I think I have a shoe for you..." When he came back, he had me try on a pair of Triumph's...:cloud9::dance3::banana::cool1:! We have a winner!! They were $130:scared1: but since I was returning the $110 Dyad's, it only felt like I was spending $20 so it didn't hurt quite so bad. I am almost tempted to get up early tomorrow and try to get in a couple miles before work:rolleyes1.

Okay. I did not realize that Wine and Dine was a night time event! Its too late for me to sign up now for this year but I am going to sign up for this race next year!

I would love to run a race at night! In Disney? I cannot imagine how fun and different that would be? It would be this or the Vegas run organized by Rock and Roll but I really think this one is more appealing simply because its in Disney.

I didn't read through it, but do all the hotels offer bus service or just certain ones?

Goofeygirl - just host resorts offer bus service. It's all on RunDisney.com if you want more info. :)

Of course, I am taking a semi-risk by staying at a non host resort (Animal Kingdom Lodge) but really I am fairly pro at Disney transportation and am not too worried about getting myself to a host resort so I can then catch a bus to the event. :)

I still have two 2 day PH tickets if anyone wants to buy them from me! No markup! I just need to exchange them for 5 days since DH and I are staying longer than I originally planned.

Hi Oregongirl!

I have 2 friends going in October, do you think the tickets would be valid for then??

Thanks!

Hi all Happy Friday! Checking in after my long run for this week. Somewhere in between unbearable humidity and pouring down rain, I managed to get in 8 miles :cool1: Was really nervous about this one but it went great. I love it when I get my whole run in, get in the car to drive home, and THEN it pours down rain :thumbsup2
I still struggle with the whole "Go slower on the long runs" thing, so I took several longer walk breaks during the second half. Still managed to get a great time in, 12:30 for me is fantastic in this weather so YAY! The hardest part are the first three or so miles. Once I get past mile 4, I'm golden.
Today I stuck to my gatorade fueling plan which always works best for me. Tried the liquid fuel pouch thing... not sure I like it, but it WAS grape unlike the chewys which is important LOL. I think I need to experiment with fueling more often in the first half.

Question- what kind of socks do you wear when running? Up to now I've been using some Hanes dry socks that I got at target. Super comfy for shorter runs but they've been bugging me lately. Anyone got an idea of anything better? I'm not opposed to spending a bit more if I have to.

Alright everyone good luck this weekend! :cheer2: I for one can't wait for fall.

You can work that transportation thing....since the race starts at 10pm , and lord knows what time you actually need to be there, the buses will still be running anyway...but what about when you are finished? The buses will take from the finish line to the host hotel and then how do you get to YOUR hotel? I know the Disney buses that transport from to hotel to park to hotel don't operate all night long...or do they? How do you plan to get back to AK?

I ask because next year I would stay at the hotel of my choice and not a host hotel so I would be wondering how do you make it to your hotel if the buses that take your around are finished.

You can definitely use your room key to charge at the kiosks. In fact, I link my venture card to my room key, charge everything back to that, then am able to wipe it off with the points.
