The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

iPhone 5 question. I just bought the iPhone 5 and I bought a new holster for running. Needless to say the new holster sucks and I'm looking for new ideas on what to use for running cause I need music for running. I am also not sure about using an armband. I have never used one before and I don't think I'd like it. What do you use?

I used the Tune Belt armband for my iPhone 4 and now I use the same one for my 5. I've been very happy with its performance and would buy another. But, I've been using armbands with my iPod/iPhone/whatever for years. Those are my favorite way to carry music since I do not use a waist belt.

Officially kicked off training this week. I did 5-1/2 miles this morning. I joined the local Galloway group. I am running with the Disney marathon training group. So I will definitely get my mileage in. I need to figure out a taper as I am not going to do 20 miles the week before our half.

Wow, that sounds so fun. You have a local Disney running group? I would love to find one out here but I doubt there is one in my community. Everyone out here looks at me a little funny when I say I am training for a Disney run.

I know I have asked this before but it was a while ago so maybe things have changed. Anyone else using Hal Higdon's plan to train? I am going to use the Novice 2 plan and I'll probably throw in some lighter, Intermediate plan speedwork every week since DD (5) wants to "train" too and will be best off on the track. I plan to start a couple of weeks early to give me room to repeat a week or two if I need to, especially since I am still acclimating to being home.

I wasn't ever comfortable using an arm band, and the pouches were to clunky for me while running. I use the Flipbelt. Head on over to youtube and you can watch reviews from fellow runners. Love it, love it, love it!

When I started I tried an armband, but hated it. I now use my SPI Belt and wear it under my shirt. I thread my earphones under my shirt and just unzip the belt slightly to allow for the headphone cord. Everything stays out of the way!

Love Higdon's plans. I've used them for half and full marathons...good stuff! ::yes::

Went out this morning and did 4.5 miles at a 12:06 pace!:dance3:

I think I spent more energy wiping the sweat off my face than I did actually running:sad2:. I wear a hat (usually sunglasses too, but the sun wasn't up yet) and it is ventilated but I still can't seem to keep the sweat out of my mouth and eyes:crazy2:. I wore my new belt and found that it if I drink 1-2 oz each time I am on a walk interval, I stay hydrated without cramping up...and I didn't have any, uh, "accidents";). I drank all 28oz before I finished plus I drank 8oz before I left. Maybe that's why I was so sweaty:confused3. It's only 71 degrees but it is 87% humidity so I am sure that played a part too.

I'm off to work now. The next day that I will NOT have to go to work for any reason is NEXT TUESDAY:scared1::scared1::scared1:. I hope I can squeeze in some runs. I am hoping to do a "long" run this Tuesday between the dentist appointment and my CE class.

I just ordered the flip belt yesterday!!! I cannot wait to get it!!! I got it specially for my iPhone, car key (right now I tie it on my shoe, lol) and drivers license for the Disney run :).

Great job!!! The humidity kills me here (south florida) more than anything. I don't mind the heat, it's the crazy 80-90 %+ humidity. Ugh! It's like running under hot water:). Anyone here a better evening runner than morning runner? I struggle with sluggishness in the morning-- I'm way better in the evenings after work...

I am a better runner in the afternoon/evening, but I generally work 0700-1900 and I never know if I will get a late call. If I don't get out of work until 8pm, I am usually too tired to run by the time I get home. I hate getting up and running at 4am, but it feels good to get it out of the way.

Oh I'm definitely an evening runner. That's why I LOVE the wine and dine. The hardest part for me for princess weekend will not be doing a 10k followed by a half. It will be getting up so early... TWICE! I'm just hoping to be able to fully open my eyes by the time I reach the magic kingdom.

Another South Florida runner here! *high fives* I also prefer and have more energy during my runs after 7pm. Doing my week runs in the evenings minus the long runs which I do in the mornings on Saturday because I'm usually running errands all day afterwards. Starting my mileage from scratch and by mile 2 yesterday I was a sweating disaster. I'm praying for low humidity by Nov. But doubt it...eek. Kind of trying not to think about the fact that this will be my first half where the bulk of my training will be smack dab in the middle of the summer as opposed to the Princess earlier this year, where I trained in the late fall when the weather was tolerable...:scared:

I will recommend the Backbeat 903 headphones to anyone that listens to music while running. I went through many headphones before finding these. I can't stand cords as they stick to me when running and often pull the headphones off when I turn my head.

The are 3 things about the Backbeats that I really like. They are cordless so no fighting with the cord when running. Second, they are over the ear, not the ear bud type. I have small ears so I have yet to find a pair of buds that will stay in my ears for more than 30 seconds even with the smallest fittings. Lastly, I feel these are much safer when compared to the ear bud type of headphones. They have a mic that lets outside noises blend in with the music or whatever you are listening to. This allows you to hear cars or other things coming your way unlike the buds that often tout that they block everything else out to give you better sound quality. I'll take safety over sound quality while running.

If you do get these, be sure to wipe them down well after each run. They are sweat resistant and will have issues over time if sweat or water gets into the earpieces. If I'm running a long run, I will wipe them down after each hour.

Glad I'm not the only one who prefers evenings!!! I get up early for work (6a-4p), but I just can't function in the am on non work days lol!!

I haven't decided on a training plan yet.. I've just gotten back into running again. I did a 5k on 4th of July (39:04) and ran 24 miles over the last two weeks. I'm not a fast runner, I maintain between a 12-13 min mile right now. I used to run a 10:30-11 mm Pre baby 2 years ago lol. I'm doing weight watchers and taking running back up again. It feels so good!!!!!!! My biggest obstacle right now is my plantar fasciitis is acting up on my left foot, but I'm following md orders and keeping it at bay.

High five back to my fellow south fl runner!:)

Definitely a morning runner here. I am too beat after a day chasing the kids around to want to do anything by the time evening comes except eat ice cream :rotfl:

So, a friend just told me that there have been rattlesnake sightings on the trails on base. If I see a snake, I'll probably never be able to run again.

My wife and I are huge WDW fans and go to Food and Wine every year. I have registered for the W&D Half and am very excited/anxious about training for it. I'm a new runner (about 3 months) and plan to follow the Galloway Program posted on rundisney.com which starts this week (July 9). I've never competed in a race (run Hope for Haiti 5k next weekend) and certainly not run anywhere close to the 13.1 mile distance. My question for all of you is whether you believe a running/training group is necessary. There are groups in my area (St. Louis) but I travel quite a bit and question how many scheduled group runs I would be able to attend. Do you guys think a group is imperative for new runners? Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

Thank goodness for another early morning runner. I was feeling a bit left out! :lmao: My kids are 6 and 5 and it is all about them in the evening. If I don't get it done in the morning, it just does not happen. I am actually a tad worried about W&D because I am an early morning riser, usually up by 5 at the latest, but in bed by 9. I am hoping for some extra adrenaline to get me through running for 2+ hours after 10P ;)

OOHH, I am with ya on the snake thing. That would totally freak me out! :scared::scared:

Haha, same here! I feel like I need to start training for the after party at W&D though! After 2 kids, I don't remember what it's like to stay up drinking until 4am :) :cool1:

Welcome to the group! So glad you can join us for W&D! :cool1:

This is JMHO. I just started running in January of this year. I completed my first half at the beginning of June. I did it all on my own, along with a 5M, a 5K (which I did with a friend), 2 10ks and a 8 mile. I like the time alone to just think and be by myself. I am meeting up with a friend for marathon weekend (doing 10K and 1/2) and Princess weekend (10K and 1/2 again) but W&D I am on my own as I did in June. Looking forward to it. I can race at my own pace and just enjoy the experience. I really think it is a matter of preference. Good luck with your decision and look forward to hearing from you more on the thread. :thumbsup2

I am training for the 1/2 at DL. I am following the Galloway plan for that race. I have been able to follow the schedule on my own. I think so long as you are self motivated no running group is needed. Good luck on your race.
