The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Hi everyone! The kids and I are traveling this month so posting is difficult. I had a cortisone shot for a herniated L4/L5 last Wednesday. Went for a run yesterday (my first in 2 weeks) and ran 3 miles in 30 minutes without pain. Pretty trilled about it and back to training now. Hopefully, there won't be anymore injuries to sidetrack me before November. Anyway, I should end up training in five different states this month. Wish me luck!

Talk about a change of scenery though! Good luck to you, I hope you stay injury free! pixiedust:

Getting ready for my first half this morning. Pretty excited. :cool1: It is sponsored by the biggest loser. Even got to hear a past contestant speak yesterday. Hope everyone gets a nice little run in today. :thumbsup2

Yay!!!!! Good luck to you, and have fun! Can't wait to hear your results! :)

Finally popping in to say hi and that, as of now, I'm in for W&D! I registered a while back and booked my room, but had a litte setback with an emergency gallbladder surgery. Hoping to start training again this week. Now I'm just waiting to see if my vacation days are approved at work. Fingers tightly crossed!

Thank you for all the incredible advice posted in this thread! I can't wait to follow along and countdown with everyone. :cool1:

Hope it went well for you! I had a 5 miler this morning. It is a race in honor of a local cross country coach providing scholarship monies to our HS runners. Nice turnout and it runs thru my neighborhood. Ran a 13:18 pace but still finished with only 3 behind me. Oh well, not my best time, but it matched my training distance for today.

My cousin came up from Cincinnati and ran a much larger 10k downtown, the Columbus 10k. He won his age group at a 6:44 pace - he definitely got the speedy genes! LOL He is 60 and shows no signs of slowing down. He offers me lots of encouragement and I really appreciate him for it.

Hello fellow racers!

I am registered for the W&D half too and would love to join in on this disboard group. This will be my first half marathon. (Most of my other races have been 5k's - my longest so far was the Rothman 8K in Philly.) I plan to run a 10K this October for a proof time/corral placement.

I'm looking forward to checking back to read everyone's posts.

I have a spectator question:
My dh will have a spectator ticket and I read that he can get into Epcot at 7pm. Can he drop me off at WWoS and then head to Epcot? Or should we head to Epcot together and then take the shuttle to WWoS from there? (We're staying off property.)

Also, when are you planning to arrive at WWoS? Is it feasible for runners to enter Epcot at 7pm and then head over to WWoS later(like 8:30ish?)

Thanks for your help! I'm sure that this thread will prove to be a wealth of information for a newbie like me! :)

Can I pick your brains a little about your experiences with pre-race preparations?

We will arrive in Orlando on Thursday, 11/7 for a one week stay, but we're thinking about holding off on our park days until early the following week. (2 park days total) Do you think this is a good plan? I'm concerned about all of the walking involved with park touring. Am I over-thinking this? Perhaps it won't be a problem, as long as I train properly.

What are your park plans before/after the race?

What will you do on race day? I'm thinking that we'll hang back at the resort and make it a pool day.

Also, I've never prepped for a night time race. Any tips on what and when to eat to fuel properly? I do plan to go for some practice night-time runs as the time approaches and my distances build.

Thanks-Jennifer

Hi Everyone!!!

My first race EVER is less than 3 weeks away. I'm running my hometown's 10k race. Looking to place out of that last corral!

I ran a training run 6 miles on Saturday. There is one local road that I took that is a bear for me. It was the one >10min mile in my while jog. Overall, I did OK. 6.05 miles, 56:19, 9:19min/mile.

I did find that I do not like GU, but I like Power Gel. So, that is good. I have something that I can use on race day. I do like Clif shot bloks, too. So, there we go. I have a few energy aides to keep me going.

Hope everyone is doing great with their training. I guess that I've been running/jogging for about 5 weeks or so now. :thumbsup2 I told DH that when I do my training run of 7 miles, I'll be over half-way to my 13.1!
:cheer2:

The experts will tell you that you're making the right call. Personally, I will be living it up thurs and Friday at the parks and sleeping most of Saturday before the race, after the tusker house buffet, that is! But, I also have no plans to Win or even PR!

I do think you're over thinking a little, but its better safe than sorry. Do a few later runs, 8 or 9 pm, and practice your fueling. I find that I have to wait a good 2 hours after dinner to run, otherwise it turns out bad.

No matter, it's a Disney race. It's gonna be a great experience even if you fall apart at mile 2 and have to crawl the rest of the way! Good luck and enjoy!

Back from my first 1/2 marathon. What a great time! Finished in 2:35:11. Surprised even myself. On track support was great. Seeing some past contestants from The Biggest Loser was too kewl! :thumbsup2 Crowd support was lots of fun. And my medal is purdy! I actually can't wait to do my next race and looking forward to W&D, marathon weekend and PHM even more!

Jennifer - I did nothing different in my 1/2 this weekend the day before in terms of walking. I think you should be ok if you rest on Saturday, but JMHO. That is my plan. I am there Thurs - Monday. No parks for me this time except for Universal on Sunday. :scared1: I know but DH wants to go and has never been. :)

Sully&Mikie - 9:19 per mile? :scared1: Holy crow that is fast! good for you! I finished with a 11:50 average for my 1/2 on Sunday. You are going to be just fine with corral placement! ;) Good luck and have fun!

DisneyRunnerGirl - Awesome job on your race! Like you said there were still 3 behind ya! ;) and you were out there doing it! You go girl! :woohoo:

Adgie128 - Welcome! :wave2:

Booked my flights this morning! Southwest is having a fare sale.

I've got so much work to do...I'm really still at the very beginning of my training. I'm getting nervous that I've left it too late and I'll get swept.

Congrats on the flights! You are official now! :rotfl2:

If you are following the Galloway plan the official training does not start until July 9th. You have plenty of time to train. You can do this! :thumbsup2

Good advice already posted to you, but thought I'd chime in. We do usually do park time for a day or two before the race. But we'll just do the morning on Saturday, then back to the hotel the rest of the day. Park walking I find is hardest on my feet - not so much tiring out my legs for running.
If you'd rather conserve your park tickets for post-race to get the most out of your days, then do that.

Awesome time! I also like the sport beans for some sugar and electrolytes.

Congratulations on your first half marathon, dlbwright! :cheer2:

Thanks for the advice about park days too - we only plan on doing 2 park days in total - but now we will consider the Thursday before the W&D half for our first park day.

How is everyone doing with their training?

I've been running straight 5k's lately, but I started "Bridge to 10k" app today...did terrible. I think the heat/humidity got to me and I didn't bring water since I'm not used to needing it...took lots of walk breaks. I think I will dig out my old running belt w/water bottle and try to bring that along next time.

My training is stinking up a storm right now. I hurt my foot 3 weeks ago and although I can run, I know from past experience that I need to get back in slowly.... I've done a grand total of 4.25 miles so far this month. :( prior to that I was averaging 40-45 a month. :)

I'm building up from 1.25 mile runs this week to 2 and then to 3. And HOPEFULLY by mid-July ill be totally back in the swing of things. I've been spending a lot of time at the gym, just haven't been able to do my regular runs lately. It's driving me bonkers!

As for my travel plans, this year DH and I plan to do a little park time Thursday night and Friday, none on saturday, and take it easier on Sunday then leave on Monday. Last year I waited until Sunday to hit the parks and my foot was a little injured (same foot actually) and I pushed myself too hard so I didn't enjoy as much.

Awww, sorry to hear that. You're doing the right thing by easing back to running slowly. BTW, I'm in awe that you average 40-45m/month! That's awesome! :cheer2: I hope to average those kind on numbers in the future. It's been ~3 years since I did 10k training and I've been averaging 5k runs or less since then. So I have quite a bit of training to do between now and November! But I'm looking forward to the challenge. ;)
