The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Even with all the people, as you start to move closer to the start, it kind of opens up. Just before you get to the start, and if they set it up the same way as last year, there's a big opening on the left right next to the bathrooms, so you'll be just fine. Take my advice, DON'T wait until the first stop!Lol!

I'm hoping for about a 1 hr 10K (give or take a few minutes) so I'll be with you guys too. Sunday is the big 10K day and Im getting nervous. I'm getting through, a nasty cough, but DH thinks hes getting it now. I just want to get this over with. In general I dont care about my time, but since this is for the sole purpose of getting an official time, I want this to be good.

CamColt - Good luck on your 10K on Sunday. I have one, actually my second, on Saturday. Hoping to PR buy a few minutes. Hope you can get rid of the cold by the weekend. I know what you mean about the times, just give me a good time for corral placement!

Compared to a race anywhere else of the same size, RunDisney events have more female runners, more new runners, and slower runners. There's no way I'd ever earn a corral A placement anywhere else, but I've been placed in A for the ToT 10-miler and the 2011 Wine & Dine. That corral A placement for W&D was probably because I improved from 2:36 at the 2010 W&D to a 2:18 at the Kentucky Derby mini marathon just 6 months later, but still.

My DH is always in A for RunDisney events - he finished the half this January at 1:39, putting him in the top 500, but he's not even a local elite around here. It has to be a really small race for him to earn an age group award at our local 5K's where he runs 21-22 minutes, because the men's age groups are just that competitive.

What corral were you in with the 2:36?

I ran my only 10k back in March (with a bad knee) and was shooting for a 55-60 minute time, but just missed it, (had to keep stopping to stretch the IT's). I know what you mean, I wanted that time to be a good one. Unless you have the willpower to totally ignore everything that's taking place on the course (characters, crowds, musical light-up thingies, etc), you probably won't PR. Since I plan on hitting up the bathroom BEFORE the start, only making one obligatory Pluto picture stop in AK, and avoiding some of the crowded sections with a (hopefully) better start position, I'm thinking last year's horrible time will decrease drastically. Then again, it's not about the time but the experience. I ran it solo last year as the DH got sick literally the day before and had to bail at the last minute. But if I find someone to run with this year, I'm sure I'll care even less about what the clock says at the end.

Exactly! For the 1/2, I just want to do it, finish it, and get the bling! Of course the quicker the better, but as long as I cross the finish line on my feet, I'll be happy to have done it.

Just to clarify a question that was asked - The Elite Runners start just prior to the release of Corral A. I remember there were maybe 10 or 20 of them total on that group. Hubby was watching and said the woman looked like gazelles when they ran. I'm not sure I'll ever have such a prancing gate or be that fast no matter how hard I train.

I also echo that the Corrals are released like 5 minutes apart and Disney seems very good about sticking to the time and being organized. I am typically in C or D for the 1/2s and the excitement is the same for each Corral.

I have a car rental question. Normally I would just do busses but DH and I are leaving early Sunday morning to get to Ft. Lauderdale for a 4 PM cruise departure, so after doing some research I am renting a car and probably picking it up Saturday and returning in Sunday as the price is the same and it's one less thing to do Sunday morning.

Does anyone have any experience with renting a car from the Hilton hotel on Disney property? I was going to do Alamo as I guess that's the "official" rental agency and the car center in at the Swan, but it turns out Avis has a car return REALLY close to the pier in Ft. Lauderdale so that one makes more sense to me. I have NEVER done a car rental at WDW. We're going to be staying at the Poly. Does it cost to park there overnight? How long does it take to actually 'secure' the car (so that I can plan my Saturday). Thoughts?

Ariel - followed your trip reports in the past. Would love to see one for the W&D.

Regarding the tech shirts - since its unisex I got a size small and love it. I normally wear a size 8ish. Fits great.

Thanks Carey! I think if I was starting right behind the elite runners, I'd probably just lay down on the road right there, curl up in a ball, and start sucking my thumb. Gazelles??!!?? I run more like an elephant! Maybe we could start the Safari Corral!

This is the corral assignments from last year. I assume that Disney assigns bib numbers based upon your submitted race proof, however they must allow some flexibility because they allow you to update your submitted proof up to the last minute.

What I found interesting was that corral A went up to 2165 in numbers, but Disney only assigned numbers up to 2102 (according to their results page for last year). So they must have had room for 63 more people in that predicted time window. I also looked at the finishers around bib number 2100, but the times are too variable to figure out what the predicted corral times were.

I did look at last year's results at the overall individual who finished in 2165 ran a 2:09:50. So if I had to make a WAG, I would say that corral A would be under 2:10. The overall finisher at 4534 finished in 2:27, guessing corral B would be somewhere around there.

Please don't hold me to any of this. It is just my best guess.

I've considered going that route, but we're trying to rack up points on AMEX for a 2015 trip to Hawaii for our 10th Anniversary/Vow Renewal Although the temptation to earn Disney $$s is slowly growing!

Good luck with Mary Kay - I used to LOVE going to those parties where we got to do our own makeovers!! And it doesn't hurt that MK is helping you go to MK (haha, see what I did there?!)

If your guess is right I might barely squeak in to A...yikes! I'm realistically hoping for B, but I am sure it all depends on how many people actually submit times. I see they haven't gotten as strict on corral placement for W&D weekend as they now are with Marathon weekend in January...I wonder if that will change?

I totally agree with you, on both counts! I "liked" the second design, I felt like you could see the "Half Marathon" wording better, and I do love the Mickey!

And I haven't worn my previous race shirts for the same reason, they don't fit me correctly. I'm a petite person, and I don't like loose shirts for running. I'm also not a fan of crew neck shirts... I do sound a bit picky, don't I?!

I wish they would offer the male/female shirts for all races!

After standing around in 40 degree temps for over an hour, as soon as my corral made it to the start, about 100 or more people headed straight to the tree line to, um, take care of things. It was a little congested but thinned out within the first mile.

I expect that they will get more strict as they get more and more runners every year, and gain experience from running these events.

The crowd parted quickly. After standing around in 40 degree temps for over an hour, as soon as my corral made it to the start, about 100 or more people headed straight to the tree line to, um, take care of things. It was a little congested but thinned out within the first mile.

I was in C for Goofy this year. What I mean by stricter is that they are now requiring proof for a wider range of times during the WDW Half/Full. For the WDW Half you have to submit proof if you think you'll finish in 3:15 or faster. For the W&D they still have it at 2:45 or faster...so people could put 2:50 without having to prove it. But for the WDW Half they do need to prove that they can run a 2:50...so the corral placements will probably be more accurate.

Ah well. The first few miles are always a bit crowded, but it thins out.
